all it takes is to release a worth while mid-end card, and they will rebound. also many people who own 8800s see no need to upgrade since they run games fine.

Don't tell me some console users are that stupid?

You don't keep track of the hardware market, all you're seeing is the drop in sales and assuming the cause.

That's likely because of NVIDIA's faulty units. Once they get that sorted out, it should be back to normal.

maybe thats because ATI has all the best cards now?

or did you actually think that Nvidia went from record breaking sales last holiday season to a 20% loss because PC gaming died overnight?

You will find that is due to ATI offering far better price to performance with their cards at the moment

Maybe Nvidias new cards aren't a big step up from 8800? Maybe ATI is providing better and cheaper cards?

8800s were a massive success for Nvidia, a huge leap from the 7 series, they sold like hot cakes. It's no shocker that they can't match the numbers they got back then especially considering that Ati offers the better bang for the buck atm.

most gpu sells consist of midrange gpu-s of which ATI with it's 48xx series is curretly the king. And I think even you can put 1 and 1 together at this point.

Probably because of people like me. I have a 8800gts 320mb and i will not be buy a new card for a very long time. I can already max all of my games except crysis and Supreme commander which i can just turn the settings down anyways. So i don't have any reason to buy a new video card.

My 7900 GS still runs today's games fine. I can't always get the highest settings but I'm not going to fork out for another graphics card just to make my game look better. For me graphics are the least important part of a game.

With less games pushing technology like Crysis and more and more multiplat's, unless the game is a pretty bad port in dire need of frames per a second, there isn't as much incentive as before as there once was. There are still games out there pushing to the limit though.

As expected, there are a lot of ill-informed responses here. First of all, to all of those who say it's because ATI is beating them because of the high end 4800 series cards, here are some facts for you to cull on: a) the 4800 cards were only available in the last month of Q2, b) in the price ranges that actually contribute the most to sales ($75-150) Nvidia is the undisputed leader.

Also, who said ATI is having a rosy time either? Apperently "The value of AMD's purchase of ATI Technologies Inc also declined..." meaning the video hardware company is bleeding money for AMD.

alot of pc games are moving away from multi plats already because of the pc hardware. Soon there will be more games that consoles can't handle. Farcry looks watered down already and crysis can't be played on console.

nVidia poured TONS of their money into the release for the GTX280.

That was their big release for the Quarter. It had been a while since their last release so sales were diminishing. They needed a new product to drive sales, otherwise they would not be doing nearly as well.

And then the GTX280 got DESTROYED by ATi's offerings.

Anyone who was thinking about buying a GTX280 held off for the 4870.

So it is only logically to believe that by getting their ***es kicked by ATi, nVidia wouldn't make as much money.

As for ATi "bleeding money" for AMD....

No **** They were getting completely destroyed before the 4800 came out. The 2000 series was a flop, the 3000 series was a flop. ATi went 2 and a half years without releasing a quality card. No **** their value went down.... The market doesn't support 2 companies at the same time. It never has. It is always a back and forth of companies outdoing their competition. And sales follow whoever is the winner. nVidia was the winner for 2 years. Now ATi is the winner.

in 2007, when nVidia was the big winner, nVidia was named Forbes Top Company of 2007.

And in terms of revenue, it is actually the mid-range cards that provided the most money. The $75-100 cards have lower profit margins and the integrated GPU's have even less profits because they have to be built into the motherboards, which means they take up more materials and and need more time.

Because no one holds off purchasing a product when a potentially superior one is around the corner? For instance people like myself that held off adopting the Nvidia 8 series until the revisions came out?

The guy doesn't understand PC gamers and is just hunting down articles that he interprets as supporting PC gaming is dying. That he is now hunting for more information to try and kick down the varying possible causes that don't support his desired cause; shows how biased he is to his interpretation of the sales drop.

With all of this aside, sales vary in any market; with consoles included. Can you imagine SW declaring consoles dead every time the sales dropped?

As for ATi "bleeding money" for AMD....

No **** They were getting completely destroyed before the 4800 came out.

horrowhip

And can you provide any evidence that their financial situation has changed? All the sources I've provided (notice I'm not going by blind speculation, which seems to be all too common around here) have said gaming hardware sales are dropping at an alarming rate, right alongside disappointing software sales. I've heard a lot of people say 4800 this and 4800 that, but they've shown nothing to back up these statements. I just figure they have no substantive rebuttal to my original topic.

I should also say that I'm a big PC gamer. So to anyone who says I'm just a console gamer, please try to come up with some better insults. I only want to bring the truth.

Oh dear, if PC hardware sales die, then there is no hope for any new consoles until 2025. Really, this thread smells fishy to me, especially that "I should also say that I'm a big PC gamer."...right, sure you are. Just thought to bring that up when you were being proved wrong, did you?

Can you support your ATI claim with AMD's Q2 SEC filings? AMD is publicly traded and based in the USA, IIRC (otherwise, it'd be more difficult to figure out ATI's number--it was Canadian).

What about your claim that bargain cards (under $150) are the big moneymakers? I would think it's the mid-range line ($150-250) where most of the sales occur--potent enough to see a difference while being a reasonable hit on the wallet.

PS. There could be one other reason, you know--seasonal lull. Gaming-related sales tend to slide in the spring into summer as people turn more to outdoor entertainments. Not to mention a general economic downturn could be reeling in sales in general.

Hopefully late 2009-early 2010.

Can't wait for that game... I was big into GvG for a while. Several top 100 guilds. Was even in a couple top 25 guilds. But that was before the tournaments and champ points...

horrowhip

all it takes is to release a worth while mid-end card, and they will rebound. also many people who own 8800s see no need to upgrade since they run games fine.muscleserge

exactly waht i was gonna say. im running crysis on very high everything in dx10 and getting 30fps on an 8800gt. why upgrade when crysis runs that good and every other game is easier to run. the card was only like $150
