One thing Dead Space 1 totally succeeded at was telling its story by having it happen AROUND you while you the player are still in control. Though I really have nothing against cutscenes, it's just that unless they really gage your interest, there is always the risk of a loss of immersion. Whereas with games like Dead Space, you still have control of the player as key events in the game take place, though the way he moves and acts relative to what the player inputs is more limited at times (yet still appropriate in the context of what's happening in the narrative). I'm kind of surprised more games this gen haven't caught on to this.

Half Life did that over 10 years ago.

i don't think TC was claiming that Dead Space invented the idea. I totally agree with TC as well. I found that DS1 was a gem in terms of innovation and story telling, compared to overly heavy handed story experiences like Uncharted, but also Dead Space 2

BioShock and Batman: Arkham Asylum managed to deliver a lot of story through gameplay as well (more so BioShock).

I have to agree, even though the game was a bit stretched out. Dead Space was a phenomenal game in so many ways. Like the dismembering, stasis, pick up limbs and use as weapons, stomping, the HUD, low gravity, brutal death animations. Some super cool puzzles/set pieces like when u jumped on to an asteroid, walked outside and planted an emergency beacon before launching it out in space. And just how heavy Isaac feels, which is perfect for a protagonist in a spacesuit! All those elements were fantastic. I just wish they would have chosen a different path for the sequel. They should have tried to distinguish the franchise more, instead of moving closer to Uncharted.

Yeah, same thing Call of Duty does, basically. It's not that uncommon.

Dead Space so far seems to be delivering the story okay, but eh... I think Alan Wake and The Walking Dead do story-driven gaming better.

Dead Space 1 was pretty good. Blended its elements well together, felt very driven and focused. But fell apart after that, DS2 was just a thrill ride and the story was poor. DS3 will be no different.

That sense of lonliness went a long was for the original.

And iboth of them suffered from the same problem... you control a character void of any personality, which IMO affects terribly the story and how you enjoy it.

Have some consistancy in your arguements.

While I hate CoD it actually has some cool campaign moments, it really sells the FPS perspective and makes you feel engaged. It's the MP I hate and the reason I stay away from them, I don't wanna pay for just the campaign

Fair enough. I'm burned from the multiplayer as well. I'll be playing Halo 4 on consoles instead

Dead Space 1 is one of my fav games this gen.. easily. So I agree TC, it just breaks my heart how DS 2 turned out. And DS3 just the looks of it and what I'm hearing sorta pisses me off to be honest. I'm going to be an idiot and buy it anyway though, and probably be dissapointed.

Oh please.

Dead Space's story consisted of fetch spare parts to repair ship, find out there's another piece that's not working, repeat for eleven chapters, kill hivemind.

The Dead Space Story and its universe is one of the best Stories this generation.

You have Dead Space, 1, 2, Extraction, Severed and the upcoming Dead Space 3. And other games like Dead Space Mobile, Ignition.
As well as, Animated Comics, Books, Movies, Comis, Viral Stuff... All amounting to the Story.

EA have gone all out of this one.

Heres the Free Animated Comics on Youtube by EA.

You mispelt Uncharted TC.

And there are way better story driven games than Dead Space. Bishock, RDR, Infamous, Assassin's Creed etc....

Be careful with your adjectives, the story is anything but engaging and the gameplay is anything but fresh. Still an awesome game though (DS2 is better)

Hmm... what's with all the hate towards DS2? What exactly went wrong with the game for you guys? Sure I don't love the series, but I found the game to be just fine in comparison to the first. With the possible exception of the gravity sections--didn't feel as immersive as the first one.

From what I remember I enjoyed the story a bit more than the first, and the progression felt a bit more meaningful than, well, just read N30F3N1X post. How they handled the progression in the first was just awful, at least, that was my experience with it. The second, while nothing special, at least went a bit beyond the "fix this" fetch quest.

Yeah Dead Space 1 was pretty good I played through the whole game while recording it if anyone who hasn't played the game wants to see how it is in very high quality video footage.

More games don't do this because a lot of players are dipsh!ts.

I've literally seen my nephew (whos 20 by the way) stare at the floor while something epic is happening literally right in front of him.

Well, I'm sorry to inform you that your opinion is wrong. How exactly is the story engaging and the gameplay fresh? I realize it's your opinion, but it's no different then saying you enjoy listening to someone who sings off-pitch. It's still your opinion, but your opinion is just wrong.

I'd say it complements it just fine. Sometimes I don't need to hear the protagonist talk all damn day, or at all. The delivery of Half-life's story is easily its strongest point. As for Dead Space its one of my favorite new IPs. And despite what people say DS 2 was better in just about every way.

The movie Event Horizon? Dead Space the game nor the movie reminded me of Event Horizon at all. The only parallel is the hellish environment. Hell, Doom is more similar to Event Horizon than Dead Space is...

Lost contact with a space ship,

A crew is sent to investigate and discover that things have gone awry.

There are characters that are supposed to be your guide but have alternate agendas.

There is a sense of out-wordly forboding and Isolation

Self mutilation....

I wasnt saying it was a straight up rip, but it took some ques from Event Horizon in terms of plot.
