Poll Can we all agree the Kinect is dead? (105 votes)

Yes 84%
No 16%
No Caption Provided

Back when it was originally announced as Project Natal in 2009, Kinect seemed revolutionary, so much more than motion controls, an all new way of augmented reality enhanced video games. When it came out, it was far less than that, but a lot of us held out in hope that the new and improved Kinect that came with the Xbox 360 successor would fix the issues of the original model.

Theoretically, it did- it just never got the chance to get off the ground. Over time, it has been icnreasingly de-emphasized. Today, it is used in no upcoming game, first or third party. Xbox One UI navigation is perfectly possible and even preferable to using the Kinect. What little use it has at this point is as a glorified microphone- which I cannot understand why Microsoft won't just let us use headset microphones for, like Sony does on PS4.

My question- is the saga of Kinect at an end? Can we say that it is well and truly dead?

Child of Eden with the Kinect was awesome. So was the 2nd and 3rd Dance Central games.

RIP sweet princess.

Did anyone else notice how much better MS's conference became without the Kinect?

The Kinect is dead, and the PS4 camera is also. The first Kinect was fun, and the kids loved using it for game. It should have been better supported. We didn't get to use the one with the Xbone much. Sadly the technology seemed to be there, but it was dead out the gate,

Kinect is still worth it for its use to control the xbox.

Plus isn't kinect used with the holographic glasses thingy?

The HoloLens is standalone and does not need anything else to work.

On the Minecraft Hololens gameplay video, they used voice command to call in a lightning strike. Also Cortana is coming accessed by voice commands. There's still a bunch of games that supports it now and upcoming games as well. Games like sports games, Just Dance and Rock Band party games that's coming and entertainment apps, so it'll still be useful for those. Also with sharing features also found and supported on other systems, Kinect just makes it easier to record and share. So no it's not dead. The Kinect is more useful than the share button on the DS4 controller.

Not at all, there is a market for its games, albeit a small one. You have tons of fitness stuff on XOne you can use with Kinect. I use it all the time for voice commands. I remember MrSpencer being asked a similar question in an interview I saw not too long ago. Cannot remember the exact wording but he was asked if MS is forgetting about Kinect, he said not at all, it is just an input device, like the controller....they won't talk about the "A" button at E3, just like they don't need to talk about Kinect all the time.

The fact that it was not too popular with the mainstream crowd, and most people prefer getting an XOne without it, does not mean it's dead. It doesn't have to be a huge seller, and it's here to stay for now, it just wasn't as successful as they hoped it would be.

Well it's not totally dead as casuals use it to shout out voice commands. Worse case scenario it will always at least do that.

No.

As long as Microsoft and developers keep adding in features to their games (they are mind you) that can be used by Kinect voice commands then no, it's not dead. Kinect should be an extension of games, not the base for them, in that regard it works perfectly.

Do you have any technical data to back that up? No? Didn't think so.

What?! Just Dance 2016 is coming. It's sad people point their noses up in regards to such awesomeness. Dance games are great, if anything I see the Kinect as a peripheral to such games, just like people paid up the ass for new Guitar Hero and Rock Band sets every other game when they added shit. But here, one peripheral serves all, if anything the Kinect is great value if you value Dance games. Now, the big question for me, is with the Xbox 360 BC coming, is Xbox One Kinect going to work with older games? Because I'd definitely like to play some of those Xbox 360 Kinect dance games.

Yes, although Cortana is coming to the new UI design, so voice functionality still works.

I think Microsoft sense it is the end of the road for Kinect, and it's better to focus on Hololens.

It serves the only purposes I truly wanted when I bought my X1. Voice control, skyping from my living room, and the little kids in my family like KSR at family get togethers. It is a dont thing as far as gaming going forward. They made some money on the 20 million sold last gen but there are like 2 fun games for it. RIP

No we can't....it's still good for those few games like Dance Central, Fantasia. But more importantly it's great for the voice commands and now with the W10 integration with Cortana it's even better. So still alive and it's used everyday at my house.

I actually thought it was a fantastic bit of technology but never got one because it was never used for anything great. A missed opportunity and it certainly does feel dead now yes.

@lamprey263: IGN has confirmed that no Xbox 360 Kinect titles will be supported through the Xbox One backwards compatibility....something to do with the fact that while emulating a 360 game, it cannot communicate with an external device.

If anyone is curious as to theories why it's dead:

If you've been following technology. You'll probably expect it to be dead.

Kinect's consumer model is already outdated and there are better (and cheaper) solutions that have emerged in the past 2 years alone that's worth developing - likely of which Microsoft cant get their hands on for a profitable solution. Microsoft never really thought the technology through, it was good for its time as an audiovisual bundle and they put it out the door to compete with Wii's motion control success. But they never really considered what advancements would come years later with audiovisual sensor technology or how sustainable it would be. I mean, 3 months after Kinect's launch, Nike literally came out with a prototype of something similar, more advanced, accurate for professional sports training purposes, for example; a year later Bose released that bluetooth earbud concept that had internal headtracking without a camera through gyroscopes and fitted with a bone conductive microphone.

You can argue that it was a good short term investment. But I dont know how much it sold or how much it cost in R&D to develop the Kinect, but it sounded like they did have long term plans for it. It launched 4-5 or so years into the 360's life cycle and was initially built into the XBONE. And that just seems like a complete oversight in basic marketing research for such a huge company.

I have a Kinect and also a product engineer/designer that keeps up with this stuff. I'd say I did have some enjoyment out of it, but it had huge limitations in the lack of tactility and -haptic- natural response that it needed.
