I think the the gaming industry will always be around, it's a medium that is expanding and growing more and more mainstream. Which is expected, they used to be outcast/evil "toys" for kids that made kids shoot people (at least according to the mass media). Now everyone plays games to some degree.
Though to be honest, if there was only just ONE company left in the industry I would hate for it to be MS. They would be the WORST, there is no denying this. They would screw people over so hard and gaming might fall back into another crash.
I thnk there is a place for all 3 of them, plus more. But Sony and Nintendo will always be the kings of the industry, they are the big movers and decide where it goes. Nintendo with games and innovation, Sony with hardware and dev support.

Sony with hardware and dev support? lol PS3 is the first time a Sony console wasn't an underpowered piece of trash. And they don't have any 3rd party support advantage anymore. MS made sure of that very early this gen. MS are the ones that made online gaming a standard feature on consoles and say what you want about it but Kinect is a huge success. Sonys attempt at motion controls failed big time.Actually you don't know what your talking about, the PS1 was more powerful than the N64 and the PS2 was more powerfu than the Dream Cast. Which is why it over shadowed it. The thing Sony does is they determinte what the format will be (CD, DVD, Blu Ray) and that is what then becomes the industry standard.
They also support devs more than anyone else. This is why Sony has such a huge amount of 1st party devs that are loyal to them, they also have the most powerful console on the market today, which is capable of doing games that none of the others can do.
MS did bring a good online infastructure to the industry, however today that is no longer the case. The competition has improved and very few people will try and justify the XBL fee, most admit it's not worth it compared to PSN. Even the average 360 gamer admits this.
MS was successful this gen because Sony let them be, they made too many mistakes at launch and MS monopolized on it like any good profit-driven company should. However Sony has caught up and done very well, and they arguabely have the best exclusives and game libarary on the market today. And that's all that matters.
