What say you fellow SW friends? Are you concerned? Do you think Sony is looking to close down Bungie in an ongoing effort to trim the fat with these layoffs? 2024 was already looking thin for our PS5, but having these delays from 2024 to 2025 is probably not in the best interest of gamers.

Maybe I am just a worry wart? Feel free to chime in on this news.

Sony trimmed the fat. They must be purging all those folks who want more gameplay.😎

Yikes! That’s not good. Seems to be a fair amount of turmoil going on in Sonyland. Hopefully these people land back on their feet soon.

Let's be real, you about only care about those games when there's bad news to share.

---

It's sad but, delays these days are costing lots of devs their jobs.

I care about the D2 expansion. But you are correct, Marathon looks like a dumpster fire and I don't care about it.

It's never a good news hearing layoffs from key-developers such as this. I still remember when they turn down MS from buying them and then they ended up going to Sony and Sony's doing the exact thing that they didn't want MS to do. The irony is astounding...

And as for Destiny 2, I'm so glad I checked out from PC as that game got worse by the day. But the blame goes to Activision and if Bungie ever gets around making Destiny 3 under Sony, I truly hope it'll be a better game the way Bungie wanted it to make from the get-go.

Funny how people thought Bungie was worse off under Microsoft or ABK. I'm starting to wonder if people's original problems with Destiny were even Activision's fault or if Bungie thought it'd be easy to pass the buck off to the much hated Activision. Now they can pass the buck off onto Sony, and then afterwards whoever tries to buy them out next. Probably doesn't help Sony doesn't have their shit together either. Lately their approach to buckling down can be summed up as:

WTF is going on at Sony? I mean they have been reporting billions & billions in profits every quarter for years, raising their prices on everything and are firing people left & right, somethings going on there.

They should have join MS side of things, this is all on them. And yes, there's no guarantee Bungie wouldn't get layoff by MS, at least MS do offer other positions whenever possible for those who are effected by layoffs.

Thanks. It's hard out there for Software Engineers. One day we're a hot commodity and the other we're a burden. And they don't tell us that until the day we get let go.

Destiny 2 (and the franchise, for all I care) can whither and fade away. I want to see Bungie make something new!

Also I doubt they actually needed to lay people off, the people at the top just don't want to pay for whatever failures they managed to bring on, and decided to cut staff instead of their salaries and bonuses.

Feel bad for the folks they laid off though, that sucks, but not really unexpected in that industry; I imagine folks that work in this field are always looking for a new job even when they have a current one.

Sony has got to be one of the most greediest and stupidest companies known to mankind. While Nintendo CEO's taking paycuts and giving every single person who works for them a 10% raise and maintaining a retention rate of about 98% Sony out here destroying families lives and giving their top percent big bonuses thanks to profits being at an all time high in the industry.

I have such hatred toward Bungie that i don't think that there's a single MS studio (including 343i) that i hate more. Now imagine for a single god damn second how Marathon, a f2p game is gonna be like. Holy shit.

Is this another case of mis-forecasting because of pandemic revenue? Or just more corporate greed? Either way there’s some mismanagement going on. Xbox should try to pick up the talent that was let go today.

Holy fucking shit they fired Michael Salvatori.

The senior most audio director, and basically one of the only legacy people left. So with Marty O'Donnell gone, and now this, the entire legendary composer/audio directorship team is now gone. They worked on every single Bungie game from Myth all the way to Destiny 2 (Destiny 1 in Marty's case). It is quite difficult to quantify how much these two are responsible for the identity of Bungie, Destiny, and of course, Halo.

How monumentally stupid Sony is for this lol 😂

I can't believe they fired Michael Salvatori. He was with Bungie and worked on their soundtracks from before Marathon.

I hope he finds success with another developer. I always enjoyed his composer work.

Keep in mind Bungie was only good when they work on Halo games and after that, it was Destiny which was a shadow of Halo's gameplay touch. Bungie isn't as good as they used to be. The layoffs were just unexpected but still sad to see people losing their careers because of mismanagements going on. Hope they find work really soon.

@Archangel3371 said:

Well actually, Activision didn't exactly own Bungie, it was just a publishing rights agreements for Destiny & Destiny 2.

Not that this makes the situation any better but this decision didn't come from Sony. Bungie is still in control of its own staff.

Higher ups don't replace themselves.

SIE and, the board of directors of Bungie would need to take that step.

That's what i hoped would happen, now that they're owned by them, but Jim Ryan in charge, i bet you Bungie was acquired for those greedy fks, so they show Sony the way to become the next Destiny.

Sony seems poorly managed at the moment. Game future is fuzzy and sparce, hardware offerings are baffling.... VR and handheld thing are doa and now we're laying off studios. They seem to be reacting rsther than leading this Gen. Kind of like the 360 generation.
