Looking through Japanese Twitter, it doesn't seem like most Japanese gamers have an issue with casting Yasuke in a leading role. Some are even mocking Westerners for getting offended over it:

Translation:

Assassin's Creed new game already has people saying, "Why is there a black samurai in the lead role in a game set in Japan? There aren't any!" "No, seriously, there was a black man from the Sengoku period who was a subordinate of a very famous Sengoku warlord! It sounds like a lie, but it's true!" A debate between otakus overseas has started lol

Seems like another case of Westerners being offended on Japan's behalf. This has happened before over "whitewashing" and "cultural appropriation" controversies, which most Japanese had no issue with either. Westerners are just looking to get offended over anything, regardless of whether it's from the "woke" or "anti-woke" crowd.

It should be noted Japan is incredibly racist. One of the most racist countries on planet earth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_Japan

Sega is especially racist.

...Except for the fact that it's the most widely shared Japanese tweet on the game with nearly 50K likes and over 10M views.

It's the same for almost every viral tweet. There's always a 100:1 ratio between views and likes.

Funny how no one cared about the magical mind control orb as far back as AC1, and the DNA reading machine that relives memories, but suddenly they care deeply about historical accuracy when it comes to the class of a black guy. A bunch of the hot takes aren't even correct, they're literally rewriting history to justify being shitty.

Anyway, it's going to be modern Ubisoft junk (they already have a 5 tiered preorder system and monthly subscription option, lol). Seems ridiculous to care one way or the other when the game will be mid-tier at best.

Assassins' Creed is the Keyser Söze of games.

It was never good but the gaming media and Ubisoft PR team tricks the marks every couple years in a cycle that will probably still be going when we're all dead.

The bottom one looks like a decaying puppet from The Dark Stone. The lady from Ass Creed is pretty hot.

Japanese woman by default are superior. Not sure she will be able to handle BBC.

Just thinking, the guys who made Shadow Tactics, an actual fantastic game, in Japan, dieded. While this garbage will probably sell 15 million.

That's no good.

The female character is less realistic than the black dude.

It should have been a black dude and japanese dude as main characters.

Female fighters were extremely rare in Japan history. Mostly taking arms as a last resource to defend their homes.

Even female samurais (women within that social class) were simply housewives.

While they're at it, they should remake the first game but have Altair die every time he jumps off a roof into a haystack. I mean, that's a massive historical inconsistency, and I have no idea how they missed that in development.

Or they should remake the first game, but have the Animus not work because the technology doesn't actually exist in real life.

I mean, Ubisoft must be complete fucking idiots if they think genetic memory is real, right?

Thank the gods the last few games were historically accurate.

They def shouldn't remake the first game.

Rather they should find all the copies that still exist, and throw them in a volcano.

Black men were rare and female warriors were rare. So, I understand the consistency of their choice.😂

@Planeforger: there is a balance between gameplay and realism.

If you it's too realistic it's not fun, if it's too unrealistic it breaks immersion.

All I am saying is that if you have to exclude someone from those 3 archetypes it should be the female one.

The black samurai is realistic and very historically interesting, the japanese males represents 99.9999% of the fighters in Japan at the time.

The Japanese woman is nor historical nor representive and the female Asians are 10 times more common than male Asians on western Media.

This is true. The idea that "anything goes without context" is just as dumb as "nothing goes because realism"

Saying that, Ass Creed was always a prude when it came to fun, in both story, characters and gameplay.

Something like GTA3/VC remember that games are suppose to be fun.

chatgpt is this good. Seriously, go on the channel and click on the names of people that wrote in Japanese, plenty are following nothing but japanese channels and their name is like HiroSuki and whatever the ****. Some are saying that they're from another country, but posted there using google translate, so its not like they're hiding and pretending to be from Japan.

That only has 214 likes... Meanwhile, the tweet I posted above has about 50K likes and more than 10M views:

It's also worth noting that your Japanese YouTube comment has mostly English replies. In contrast, the Japanese tweet I posted above has mostly Japanese replies.

In other words, the Japanese tweet I posted above is a more accurate representation of what Japanese gamers really think of the game. It's also worth noting that there's been a bunch of Japanese media featuring Yasuke, so Japanese audiences aren't so shocked like Western audiences who've never heard of him until the other day.

Another viral Japanese tweet defending the game's decision to cast Yasuke in a leading role:

Translation:

I think Yasuke would be okay, and in response to the response "Why Yasuke?", I think "Well, if the story is set in Japan and he's an assassin belonging to the Assassin Brotherhood, the most natural position would be 'a black slave brought from Portugal.'" If he was set as a Japanese character, it would be unnatural if he wasn't a member of the Assassin Brotherhood but a ninja.

Ubishit devs are seeing that whatever hype they can have for the game, its burning alive, so they made a Japanese account, and spam positive tweets in hope one goes viral. How original.

While it's true that women weren't allowed to be Samurai, female warriors did exist in Japanese history:

Onna-musha (female warriors)

But you're right that they usually only took up arms as self-defence, rather than fighting offensive wars like male Samurai. However, the female protagonist in AC is a Kunoichi (female ninja)...

Kunoichi (female ninja)

They didn't usually engage in direct combat, but were basically like female spies engaging in espionage. But in modern Japanese media, they're usually depicted as fighters.

Going through the YouTube comments section of the Japanese trailer...

When you translate most of the "Japanese" comments, it usually starts with:

"I'm from country X."

Clearly, most of those "Japanese" comments are using Google Translate.

@Jag85: I don't know if it matters where the japanese language comment come from. They are comments, not a poll.

Besides, we already know that several popular Japanese anime and games feature non ethnically japanese samurais, so we can tell at least a large group of people are not bothered by it .

For me it's a total non issue.

Unless the character start adding dialogue about the patriarchy or try to analyze the world in terms of contemporary American race relationships, I am totally ok with this.

I also would like to see the reactions peasants have to yasuke. I have walked small Chinese and Japanese towns in the middle of nowhere and as non asian person, I attracted A LOT of attention.

Obviously, Japanese people are not a monolith and have different opinions, just like Westerners. But the narrative being painted in the West about Japan being offended (which I initially believed) is untrue. Most Japanese gamers are not bothered by it (evident from Japanese Twitter). Most of the outrage is coming from the West.

But yes, I'd also have an issue with it if they engaged in historical revisionism and tried to insert modern politics into the game... But then again, it's historical fantasy, so there's always going to be fantastical elements that obviously didn't happen in history.

When Nobunaga first met Yasuke, he thought he was covered in black ink and told his servants to wash off the ink... only to be shocked that it didn't come off and that's his actual skin colour. This historical anecdote is accurately depicted in the Yasuke anime:

Because it's clearly the woke agenda. Won in the West, think of all the propaganda games we've had pushed in our face last decade. Sweet Baby Inc.

Asia has largely ignored this and been insular. Now they are trying to normalize their far-left views for their "betterment". Which itself is most definitely a form of cultural elitism.

It's no wonder all the Japanese users on the internet are mad as evident by Jags post. Trying turn their country into Portland.

@uninspiredcup: I hate the woke stuff as much as the next guy, but this game has aliens, gods and super high tech stuff. I'll only be angry with the woke stuff if the story in the game actually tries to revision history, which would be hard to do cos it's still a sci fi series.

I'd rather want gamers to be outraged with the price tag and possibly locked missions from the season pass.

From the Ubisoft Japan channel on youtube, using google translate. Even Japan is shitting on the dev😆😆😆HELL YEA

Or it is non Japanese people using translate to act like they are Japanese. That whole youtube's video comments are full of this.

If you hit translate, and translates perfect English, they aren't Japanese.

No, look at the damn name. The large majority are Japanese people with old youtube accounts.

So how does the translation "work perfectly"?

They aren't Japanese, they are English speakers using a translator.

Going through the YouTube comments section of the Japanese trailer...

When you translate most of the "Japanese" comments, it usually starts with:

"I'm from country X."

Clearly, most of those "Japanese" comments are using Google Translate.

That's why you look at the name of the person first. And its not "most", but there is a few, clearly showing you that the whole globe is pissed off at ubisoft.

Typing shit tbh. But you are 100% right, but more to the point, it's Assassin's Creed, it's like getting upset at Michael Bay slop (barring The Rock which is awesome) of stereotypical black characters going

"oh hells ye, thiz shit be crazy!", or some such.

DAHHHHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Think, cynically as well, someone behind the scenes knows they will create investment in the product, even by people who otherwise wouldn't give a shit.

How many dumbass "woke" videos are probably already spammed on Youtube right now? With smooth brain red letter BOLD word to create a flight or fight response from right-wing plebs and dumb kids who don't know any better?

Free PR. Likewise get the left wing media predictable jumping on the sword they are also massively politically bias.

Love to know the behind the scenes thinking of this. By that I mean the real behind the scenes and not some fluff PR video telling us how prosperous everything is.

@uninspiredcup: Oh yeah, it's most likely a PR move. Always has been with these companies. They really don't care about the people, they just want to hit the "goodness" target for their bottom line. That's why companies with the rainbow flag don't change their logos for their Middle Eastern account.

Also, Ubisoft has been dead to me for a long time, so it'd take a while for me to care about new Assassin's Creed stuff, especially since Ghost of Tsuhima just released on PC.

Japanese woman shuts down ignorant gaijin claiming Yasuke was not a samurai:

Bro JAPANESE people are more than ok having Yasuke as ONE of the main character, but no. Your Average Mexican/Argentinian pretending to be Japanese nazi mfs are the ones crying LMFAO. pic.twitter.com/fwFYkzu7nv

— 🥚 (@jeannette_feliz) May 17, 2024

Another Japanese Twitter user mocking Western gaijin crying over Yasuke:

Translation:

Westerner: "Japanese people must be angry that the main character of Assassin's Creed is a black samurai!!!"

Japanese person: "Wow, it's Yasuke! How cool!"

@Jag85: Did we all forget Samurai Warriors 5 existed in the past? I don't remember the outcry it got since Yasuke was in it and the game came out back in June 2021. Samurai Warrior 5 is a Japanese game made with Japanese developers in mind who treat Yasuke with more respect than what we see outcry is just silly to me.

And we do have a Black Samurai in the game Way of the Samurai but even back then, I never suspected he was based on Yasuke anyway.
