Almost a year up.... yet no killer app???

Yeah from Microsoft and Sony. Now by killer apps I mean any new IP or further release of existing 1st party ones.

So Infamous Second son and Killzone:SF from Sony. Ryse and nothing more that warrants a mention from MS.

Is this the slowest run-up to killer apps we ever witnessed?

And meanwhile WiiU's releases continue to impress...

MS : FH2 and MCC
SONY : nothing
NINTENDO : Smash Bros. Bayonetta 2 and so on

star citizen will be bestest new ip. rest are causal console games.

How is killzone SF a "killer" app? It's more generic than cod. Neither is ryse in fairness.

A "killer app".. probably not. But good software.. yes!

The only problem I see is that last gen was too long and countless sequels (ie milking) killed off excitement for existing IPs. Things will vet better next year.. there are a ton of potentially great killer apps coming out.

Getting the feeling Sunset Overdrive may deliver in a big way. We shall see.

MCC though a collection of older games may be a killer app as odd as that may sound. Can't wait till they unveil the new Gears, that could do it as well.

Well for me there are two killer apps on the XB1, Forza Motorsport 5 and Forza Horizon 2. True enough FM5 got off to a rocky start, but they really turned it around with some additional content and policy changes. I'm a special case though since racing games are system sellers for me.

Divinity: Original Sin massacres most other games this year. It will most likely win this year's GOTY.

Agree that these games are nothing special. I mentioned them cuz there's nothing else is in the horizon that can be called a killer app.

We have not yet seen a game that can be marked a console seller for either parties. And it's been an year almost.

Yup neither of those have a killer app yet. I would argue the WiiU has two atm (SM 3D world, Bayonetta 2) but its crippled by a steep price for its weak hardware and the lack of 3rd party support. If Nintendo released a $200 WiiU with the pro-controler instead of the gamepad I'm sure it would sell buckets. Hell, I'm not even a Nintendo fan and I would probably buy one just to play Bayonetta 2

FH2 is on X360 and if MCC counts then so does TLOU remastered

Already regretting getting a PS4 before an X1 since most of my console-friends have X1s... sigh.

I agree with TC... I can understand last holiday. But now a full holiday later and there has been no must have game for either XB or PS. It is quite a shame... and very different from previous console launches.

Its the gen of buying hardware and software is an afterthought. Thank God for Nintendo or the end of the year would be pretty leery.

I know that FH2 is on 360 but isn't the XONE version the definitive one?
for me TLOU R is not really a killer app since it's only one game and graphics hasn't really improved(it's only 1 year old and they already made a remaster?)

Yeah the Forza games are pretty much it at this point. It's been a slow start. I don't own either a PS4 or XONE yet.

Titanfall is a killer app (at least for me) but it's 3rd party so wouldn't fit your criteria.

yeah that Master Chief Collection is pretty much it for Microsoft. Sony's PS4 sold on Pure Hype alone.

HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLL NO. The Last of Us "Remaster" is nothing more than a delayed release of the PS4 version of the game. Master Chief Collection is well more deserving of the "Remaster" title than The Last of Us because it has not just 1 remastered title, but 2, one of which hasn't been around for nearly a decade (Halo 2).

That's not to say The Last of Us isn't something to consider getting (because it is well worth the time to play) it's not worth owning a PS4 over, while a Remaster of Halo 2 kinda is.

Definitive? Why? Because it has better graphics? I doubt many would buy an X1 for FH2 when they can have pretty much the same experience on the X360 and thats what "killer app" means i.e. a game that alone makes us buy a console. Oh, and Forza has never been a killer app. Sure it sells well but hardly is an IP that sells consoles. FH2 is NOT a killer app for the X1

TLOU R sold 2 million thus far on PS4 and helped push a lot of PS4 consoles thus IS a killer app. Dont fool yourself

Multiplats too dude. In System Wars they "don't count" and we all have multiple systems to play them, PC and so forth. But all my more casual/mainstream gamer friends are pretty delighted with the next gen games they are getting on PS4. My roommate is jizzing himself over Shadow Of Mordor for example.

@Vatusus: racing games do sell sytems. They aren't popular here on Gamespot, but there are plenty of communities out there that prove you wrong. GTPlanet.net for example. When people are spending thousands on cockpits, wheels, shifters, pedals, button boxes, etc. buying a new console to play a new game is not really a problem.

Yup, the GT series is I think the best selling franchise on PS so ya know, just sayin.

That's not a remaster, that's a remake.

The rest are "remasters" (or ports if you want).

Not really surprising...like the beginning of most gens, a majority of games are cross-gen because the install base on next gen consoles isn't large enough yet to justify AAA budget blockbusters.

Now, if you would be willing to put "your money where your mouth is" and directly crowd-fund AAA titles for next gen only, then I'm sure some developer would be more than happy to oblige.

Sunset Overdrive and MCC are the reasons to own an X1 this holiday as far as I'm concerned. If neither of those interest you then you'll have to look to 2015 for a killer app on either console.

Yeah theres a bit of a difference between the MCC and TLOU. Really can't be bothered arguing over it, and if neither count then whatever.

But in reality outside SW, MCC has far greater potential to be a system seller than TLOU remastered ever had. It was almost like Sony decided to just release a GOTY version of TLOU, but put it on the PS4 instead. MCC is a whole different kettle of fish.

Can we please stop mentioning PC exclusives.

I'm still having fun with my PS3 and will be having even more fun when BL: The Pre-Sequel drops in less than a week. I plan on buying a PS4 as soon as Sony announces their 1 TB PS4 sku for the holidays.

Master Chief Collection is coming and besides that MS has a solid lineup this year with Sunset Overdrive and Horizon 2.

Racing games are a little too niche a genre to be a killer app.

Forza 5, dead rising, rise, titanfall, forza horizon 2, sunset overdrive, halo mcc, dance central, fantasia, yada yada.

Yeah, who wants to play one of the best games ever made (along with its 3 sequels). Hmmm, guess all those pre-orders are imaginary.

Difference is MS is putting a lot of effort in to the MCC.

TLOU was just a lazy re-release, there isn't that big a difference in the graphics and it offers nothing new over the PS3 version.

@Serioussamik: im happy with my xbox one. Its had multiple great games come to it that you cant play on a sony console, plus 1st dibs on others. In a few weeks we'll all be playing sunset overdrive and halo too.
