Reading the responses in this thread vs. the responses in the Giant Bomb thread is incredibly eyeraising. They couldn't be more different in terms of how the communities viewed the people involved.
For the record, my best wishes to all the individuals who got laid off. I can only imagine how badly that sucks right now and I knew several of them personally from years on the site and from working with them from my time as a moderator. I may not have always agreed 100% of the time with any single one of them on any particular issue, but they all knew that such disagreements were to be expected.
MacShea has been stirring the shizznit out of the community for years and Carolyn, while I wasn't even aware of her position nonetheless her work on GS before the laid-offs, from what I hear her last review might not have done her the "good" she expected.
And chele banned? People have been acting more dickish in here for the longest time after this site went to shit and mods have done nothing about it.
Anyone let go today who finds themselves in Central Florida and is interested in an entry level position in sales let me know. I'm looking for someone now.

Yea I wanted to puke after the first comment saying Carolyn was the best writer over here
Them number one writing skillz (also I believe someone commented later on how Lara Croft did the same, kill hundreds of people as well but Carolyn had no issues with it)
It's always sad to see people lose their jobs, I wish them all the best of luck in their future endeavors.
In my honest to god opinion though I think this is for the better of gamespot. The site hasn't been much aside from click bait articles and a few gems here and there. I Hope this ushers in a new era and better articles from the site and revitalize it, instead of allowing click bait to wiggle through ( every site has it I know but this was far worse than most)
Not too bothered about this, never read the reviews that GS did. Most were just sensational headline grabbing anyway but it is sad to see people no matter who they are and if you liked them or not lose their jobs. Still, there are places that these people will go, its not like they won't get new jobs.
Man, this it hitting me hard. I really hope they can get picked up soon.

My friends, essentially, what popular game sites want is a 20 something dude for the young generation to identify with or a female, with tits. To bring in hits.
In many ways, although gamepot did pander, it also had diverse reviewers of different ages and sexual orientation.
Chances are, they will be replaced with a 20 something boy band looking prick, or a Naomi Kyle girl with tits, blabbing shit when in fact these two people (who should be loved) had superior gaming knowledge and was willing to go against the grain.

She riled up too many people.... though in her defence.... not rating TLOU higher is not exactly a crime and she was likely just following the footsteps of the previous review....
or maybe shes just more level headed than most hype maniacs that value technical wank material of actual gameplay.
Oh i thought she gave it great score, not like 8 is bad for a last gen port
People weren't riled up so much about her score, as what she said in her review. same with the GTA V review
I disagreed with what she was writing. As many have already said, it felt like I was reading something from Kotaku. A lot of it was just soap-boxing then somehow she would give the game a 9/10. It just doesn't make sense, stuff like that has no place in a review. By all means discuss these things in a feature article but not in a review of a game that has heavy violence.

I don't need to see what your views on misogyny are and they sure as hell have no place in a review for a game like GTA5. As I said before, write a feature article where you discuss these things at length if you want to have something to talk about but they have no place in a review.
The GTA5 and the TLOU sparked some big fires not because of the score I believe but what was actually written in the review. I don't believe for a second that she is a bad writer, in fact I believe she was one of the best GS had but what let her down was the fact that she let her personal opinions into doing reviews.
Half way down the review, it changes from being about the actual game to her soap boxing.
On a less positive note, it’s deeply frustrating that, while its central and supporting male characters are flawed and complex characters, with a few extremely minor exceptions (such as the aforementioned optional getaway driver), GTA V has little room for women except to portray them as strippers, prostitutes, long-suffering wives, humorless girlfriends and goofy, new-age feminists we’re meant to laugh at.
Characters constantly spout lines that glorify male sexuality while demeaning women, and the billboards and radio stations of the world reinforce this misogyny, with ads that equate manhood with sleek sports cars while encouraging women to purchase a fragrance that will make them “smell like a bitch.” Yes, these are exaggerations of misogynistic undercurrents in our own society, but not satirical ones. With nothing in the narrative to underscore how insane and wrong this is, all the game does is reinforce and celebrate sexism. The beauty of cruising in the sun-kissed Los Santos hills while listening to “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood turns sour really quick when a voice comes on the radio that talks about using a woman as a urinal.
GTA has always been like that, why expect anything different. And regarding the "Goofy new-age feminists" comment, I think that is dam true. GTA has always been a parody of American life and given the rise in these SJW types its only natural for R* to poke fun it them. They do it on America's view on terrorism, other countries, the police, the army, the political system....
