I guessing most people here don't remember 1987, but that's my favorite year.

1998 grabs 1999 by the nipples, twists them around until 1999 screams, and then body slams it to the floor and shats all over 1999's body, all while driving a machete through 1999's testicles.

y cuz of OOT? u do know Majoras Mask is better right?
sure starcraft and half-life came out in 1998, but counterstrike came out in 1999, and cs became the biggest e-sport in the world.
also, shenmue & powerstone came out in 1999, and so did silent hill and resident evil 3.
and street fighter III: third strike came out in 1999, so u got alot of to live up too.
1998 was a great year, but for me I love the 90's, you have all the great series: Mechwarrior, age of empires, wing commander, diablo, ultima, half-life, fallout, etc...
You guys are forgetting 1996.
Diablo !!!!
Grand Prix II
Super Mario 64
Command & Conquer Red Alert !!!!
Quake
Tekken 2
Duke Nukem 3D
Resident Evil (sure there are better ones, but it was concieved this year)
Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
Civilization II
Nascar Racing 2
Chaos Overlords
Crash Bandicoot (not my cup of tea)
Mechwarrior II: Mercenaries
Circle of Blood
Bad Mojo (anyone remember that game? with the eye & cockroach on the box cover?)
Star Control 3
And let's not forget that our dear Gamespot was brought to life in 1996 :)
Damn the late 90's were good to us gamers.

It's almost TOO awesome.
It was a great year because of Planescape: Torment, Outcast, System Shock 2, Omikron: The Nomad Soul, Heroes of Might and Magic III, Command & Conquer: Tiberium Sun, Age of Empires 2, Quake III: Arena, Unreal Tournament, etc, but I have sad memories from 1999 as well:
The whole 90's decade was epic for us gamers we were very focused gamers as well, even fanboyism was at an all time low, now its almost as if we play less games and debate more about the systems/consoles we play on, i miss the good ol days :(brown_flameMan. There was never a "golden age of happiness". I was called a stupid kid for playing Mario instead of Sonic. There was tons of SNES vs Megadrive graphics debatates. It was exactly as bad then as now. Gamers are just a whiny bunch unfortunately :P

Everquest, Asheron's Call, Counterstrike, Unreal Tournament, Super Smash Bros, 1999 was the best year in gaming history ever, in the history of the world's world
flashfall
yet you failed to list quake 3. fail.
will crash ever make a return, i miss him, he was one of my first playstation game characters, i personally consider him a ps mascot, but they never followed up on him with more games. why ?I would say 96-99 were probably the best. Arguably the two best series of gaming back in the day launched during those times. These were Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot. I have a long history with both, so its definitely the peak/greatest for me.

I doubt it will ever make a return, at least in all its glory. He was definitely one of my favorites too, had countless hours of fun playing as Crash. As far as following up on the game/character, it never really happened for a few reasons. I think one of the biggest mistakes they made was handing the game over to another developer. I'm not sure on the entire story, but from what I understand.. Naughty Dog initially made the first few games and handed over the rights to another developer "Eurocom" that was pretty much the first stage in its decline. The quality of game wasn't the same. It shifted to a multiplat game soon after that.. SO it could never really be called a "PS" mascot much less anything else.
Sad to see where a lot of these series went, had a blast with em :|

Rainbow Six Vegas came out in 1998?! That year was just too good for mere mortals. And you didn't even list the greatest game of all time: Grim Fandango./thread Not kidding at all. End it. Nothing can compete with that.1998: Grim Fandango, Half-Life, Starcraft, Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy Tactics and a billion more...
longtonguecat
Hahahaha... No. You were off by a decade. Tell tale sign of a gamer who started this gen, saying 2008 was the best year for gaming.[QUOTE="hd5870corei7"]
2008. MGS4, GTAIV, LBP, Fallout 3, etc
Fudgycakes
late 90s were good.
that's when MechWarrior and the C&C franchise were at their best. had great games in 2000 too. after that, it was pretty much downhill.
so I'd agree just because of those two franchises:D
HavocV3
i knoooow. it feels so weird now that Medal of Honor, Tomb Raider, Command & Conquer, etc. are considered 'crappy games'. i mean, back then they were the bomb.
