My Intentions:

As someone who is on the PS3 forums very often, I've noticed that most people who have had PS3 problems own one of the new 40GB or 80GB models as opposed to the older 60GB or 20GB models, and I've been wondering if there is some truth to this observation. I'm taking a poll and would like as many people as possible to participate. I would also like to produce a somewhat accurate "console failure rate" for the PS3 for the Gamespot community.

I've had my 60GB since January of 2007 without any problems. I would also appreciate any posts in an effort to keep this thread alive so that it can gather as much data as possible. (hijackers welcome :D)

What I mean by "Console Problems":

Unless your PS3 has reached the point of unplayability, as in freezing constantly and consistently, disc-read errors, or it just stopped working/turning on, etc, please don't vote that you've had problems. Just to clear up any doubts, I mean problems as in bricked, broken, or unplayable PS3s. To anyone who is confused, the following list should clear up any confusion. If you're still not sure whether your issues count, then please post and ask me so that I can tell you which way to vote.

"Problems" DO include:

  • freezing on a constant or consistent basis (at least once or twice every one or two weeks)
  • disc-read errors rendering games and/or movies unplayable/unwatchable
  • PS3 not turning on

"Problems" DO NOT include:

  • freezing occasionally (less than once every month)
  • problems playing a specific game or movie
  • internet lag or connection issues such as an inability to log on, or spontaneous logging off of PSN or disconnection from the online service (problems like these can rarely be attributed specificly to the PS3 and is more likely just a problem with your home network - if you've eliminated all other possible causes other than your PS3, then you may count it as a problem)

Survey Adjustments:

If anyone has a friend or relative without a Gamespot account who owns a PS3, please let me know which category he/she belongs to so that I can expand and adjust the survey results accordingly. Also, if you think you voted incorrectly, let me know. I want these results to be as accurate as possible.

I own a 20GB or 60GB and have had console problems. +2
I own a 20GB or 60GB and have NOT had console problems. +11

I own a 40GB or 80GB and have had console problems. +1
I own a 40GB or 80GB and have NOT had console problems. +6

Not my ps3 specifically, but the 60 gig model i bought for my nephew broke down on Christmas morning when trying to update COD4. It powered off and would not turn back on.

I bought a 20 gig a month after launch and have had no problems at all. I just got to get myself a new hard-drive soon.

That reminds me - please don't count occasional freezing as a problem because that's bound to happen. Unless your PS3 has reached the point of unplayability, as in freezing constantly and consistently, disc-read errors, or it just stopped working/turning on, etc, please don't vote that you've had problems.

Only 1 problem with my 60gig, the optical audio output stopped working. I now have to use av output for sound, and HDMI for vid. Sucks because now I don't have true surround sound. I would send it back but it happened only 1 1/2 weeks ago and did not want to be without it for the GTA4 launch.

Where are all the 40GB/80GB PS3 owners today!? So far, there have been about 50 20GB/60GB votes, but only about 10 40GB/80GB votes.

I'm and early adopter of premium 60GB version since November 18th 2006. Aside from Assassins Creed crashing on me few times before the patch, (which is not PS3 issue but the game's developing) I have never had any issues whatsoever.

Dust it off every few days, keep it in nice and spadefull environment and I have the system ON for at least 14 hours every single day since that day especially because I use remote play with PSP.

Take care of your hardware, and it will always work well. ^_^

Got a 60GB (now upgraded to 320GB) in October 2007 and it's worked fine. It's frozen quite a few times on online games but that's it.

(Voted for 2nd option)

I have a 60Gb system and seems good given all the wear and tear I've put it through...but other than freezing and restarts or freezing and shut downs, I haven't experienced much thus far

Out of the 139 votes, only 12 people had console problems. Hurray for PS3!

Ah well at least I can report that none of the versions gave me any sort of problems whatsoever except for AC but that wasn't the PS3's fault and it still ran the game pretty damn smoothy only once in my entire playthrough which I actually quite enjoyed to tell yaz the truth :D did my game suffer like a 7 second slow down perioud and that's about it can't really say that's an issue :p.
