I hear a lot of claims being made here about stand by mode is much better for your PS3 and actually helps it. But I hear no explinations or reasons as to why it helps the PS3.
Wouldnt turning the system fully off help it even more by giving it more rest and less strain on the PS3 rather than staying in stand by mode always? When you turn the power switch of at the back all of the components get to rest, including the fans.

The basis is that all electronic components have a finite number of power cycles. Turning them on and off puts more wear and tear than just leaving them on, in a low-power state (standby). With today's electronics the difference is minimal. Neither way is really any worse for your ps3. Turning it off will not make your fans last longer or protect it from a freak surge. Leaving it in standby will not extend it's life by any meaningful length of time. The only real difference, is that in standby, you can turn it on and off from your seat with the controller. Or from work with your psp.
I work retail and I get lots of people who tell me that their ps3 systems burned up from standby mode, and that disturbs me. Granted some of them aren't the brightest people I've met, most of them simply didn't know about the switch in the back....
I know that the Wii can get some problems when in stand by mode.
Does constantly flipping the switch cause the circuits to wear out?
I have my PS3 since Dec 2006 and I rebooted it a few times only, I have a Monster Power Surge ($199) and I always keep it on Stand by (Red Light).
Now my brother lives in Brazil and always leave his PS3 on stand by (They have bad power surges down there) and never had a problem (but his PS3 died with COD4).
i put mine in standby mode then turn it off from the back so nothing happens23_jordan
How long have you owned your console for? Do you do this ALL the time?
Is the PS2 like the PS3 powerswitch wise? Because I have turned my PS2 off at the back for 5 years and it still works fine.

You spent 200 dollars for a surge protector? Wow, businessmen love people like you.
I have my system for about a year now. I try to play it daily but sometimes works prevents that. On that note ever day when I'm done playing for a while I shut down the system first and when it's completely OFF then I turn the plug OFF from the back of the PS3.
There is nothing wrong either way you do it, it's a personal preference. I just prefer my PS3 to be OFF completely and not run in background when I'm not using it.
i never heard of power surges effecting a ps3, ive never had a problem with it. a fly is not going to turn it on!! lol
i just use the controler cause im lazy turning the power off doesnt seem needed unless you dont want to get elctrocuted whilst pluging in the ps3 into another socket happend to me once it hurts.

Yeah, I spent 200 dollars on a Surge protector, for my Plasma, PS3, Satellite, Audio Receiver and Subwoofer (All that is worth about 8000 dollars). So I decided to add 2.5% on top of my 8000 dollar expenditure to avoid any surge problems.
Now my 200 dollars does not seem as much huh?
If it was for SDTV and the PS3 I would have thought otherwise.
Note: If you bought (from your own money, not your parents) your entire videogame set. 200 dollars is the least of the problems.
If you spend 1500-2500 on the TV, 300-1000 dollars on Audio Receiver, + speakers + subwoffer + cable from your own money, I DOUBT you will play during a rainy day without a surge protector.

Okay, a surge protector is a surge protector. You wasted like 150 bucks on the Monster brand name. Tell me, why does HDMI cables from the internet cost 5 bucks while Monster cables cost in upwards of 100 bucks? They do the same job.

Ahh.. The monster power surge came with a insurance policy. That's all I cared. And I completely agree that HDMI cables cost 5 bucks online, do the same job (unless you are putting them thorugh walls, fireproof etc).
I just wanted to say that according to one test, the remote start up standby eats considerably more power than standby activated by pressing the button on the ps3:
http://www.aeropause.com/archives/2007/12/profiles_in_power_the_ps3_360.php
"Although the PLAYSTATION 3 system is designed to be powered on continuously, it is recommended that you take a break at about 30-minute intervals. We also recommend setting the PLAYSTATION 3 system to stand-by mode with the red light on whenever you are not playing for an extended period of time. The main switch does not need to be turned-off. When the PLAYSTATION 3 system is in stand-by mode, it is similar to turning-off your television set with the remote control. Though the display is "off", the inside workings are in a stand-by mode waiting for the signal from the remote control to re-activate. However, if you prefer to turn-off the main switch rather than stand-by mode, it will not harm the PLAYSTATION 3 system."
From the Playstation 3 customer support/knowlege center page. So it seems like both ways are 100% safe.
