Can I play Ys: memories of Celceta w/o playing one before?

never played a Ys before, but the game looks interesting. will i be totally lost in the plot, or is it a good intro game?

Each Ys is mostly an independent story with the same main character (Adol). You won't have any problems. It's an awesome game and it's part of the crazy sale on PSN this week. Don't sleep on it.
