Quake 4.
What I got (an x1950ro) was top of the line when I got it. It hasn't let me down, though. 117 fps in STALKER (all settings maxed---70fps all maxed and Full dynamic lighting after gigabowser's user text tweak.), 60fps in FEAR (all settings maxed) 60 in QUAKE 4 (all settings maxed) and 40-71 in oblivion (all settings maxed.) I guess the big test will be Crysis.

How are you getting 70fps maxed with that card? My card is considerably faster and I have more ram, and I get 30-60 fps...
That would be in 2000 where i upgraded my old pc from 64 to 128 mb RAM to play Diablo 2.
More recently I upgraded my "new" PC's graphics card from geforce fx 5500 to X1600 to play Oblivion and other newer games.

considerably faster, huh? Meh. I don't know, really. I am as amazed as you are every time I fire up a new game and see awesome frame rates. I can' t wait till some of the newer games like Crysis, UT3, and Bioshock come out to see I how I fare agains those. (Btw, the 70fps in STALKER was pre float32 mod. after it I get 77-90 :P)

Considerably faster as in like...it gets higher framerates then 2 of your cards in SLI
I rest my case. The difference in fps may be the fact that my monitor only supports 1280x1024, yours may be higher and there for slower in the fps department (higher res equals slower fps...usually.)

Rest your case? Are we in court? lol
Anyways, no, I don't think that is it. I am suggesting you are not in fact playing on "max" with full dynamic lights. Prior to this system I had:
PIV 3.0 ghz W/HT
2GB LL Ram in dual channel mode
X1950pro 256mb
With full dynamic lights at ANY resolution it was a slide show. With the patch and Float32 mod, it still was like 15-30FPS. This was @ 1024X768...
Here is a benchmark of your card (mind you, with a computer that is 2-3 times faster then yours...)

Even with Float32 mod (which states up to 20% FPS boost, you would not even be close to the 70 FPS range. I bet you ask why I even care? Well...I just would hate someone out the to upgrade to a X1950pro and expect to max out STALKER with full dynamic lights and expect to get 70FPS, becuase the reality is, you wont even get close...
I really wouldn't say a particular game made me upgrade.. however the IL2 Sturmovik/Forgotten Battles/Pacific Fighters/1946 has 'urged" me to get some upticks from time to time. I'm still running AGP, I'm currently up to a X1950 Pro 512mb AGP so I can hold onto my rig for just one more year. By then, who knows what'll be out.

I understand where you are coming from. No we are not in court lol. I just went into my settings for STALKER and found that in fact, grass density was turned to half and anti aliasing was at zero. I apologize for teh confusion. (People DO buy this card it is now dirt cheap and it hasn't failed me.)
By the way, before the float32 mod, I got 4fps with FDL. So, major slideshow going on there.
I bet you ask why I even care? Nope. As I said I understand what you were saying and your skepticism was rightly placed, for as I have conceded it was not "max." HEAR ME PEOPLE? NOT MAX! Although, 'tis true for the other games I mentioned.
Peace out bro.

Well I don't know dnuggs, I think the X1950 XTX in Crossfire gets better results than a lone 8800, I don't know 'bout your card though. Still the X1950 is a great card.
Back in the day I bought 8 megs of ram so I could have the 16 required to play Mechwarrior 2 Mercs.
Since then, Oblivion. Went from a 6600gt to an X1800XT. Expensive game, that (300 + 50). Glad I did though. Haven't run into a game yet that the x1800xt can't handle. Glad I didn't spend the extra hundered for the x1900xt, as the x1800xt, when OCd, usually outperforms the x1900xt by a fair margin (at least in the games I play).
Still the X1950 is a great card.
And dirt cheap now. I love it. Bought mine late last year after I bought a new dell thta had a (ROFL) x300se. ZOMG! IT SUCKED MAJOR DOODY.

I am basing my claim on these...

Ya 2 X1950XTX;s in crossfire might be a bit faster, but not the pros.
"Still the X1950 is a great card."
I wasn't that impressed when I got one, although my system might have been hindering it a bit...
Having Warhammer - Mark of Chaos, and Neverwinter Nights 2 run slow has got me upgrading here in a few weeks.
Going with:
-e6600
-8800 GTS (or a GTX if prices drop from r600 comming out soon)
-2GB (2x 1GB) G.Skill 800Mhz 2-3-2-8
Ryanzbane
NWN 2 will run great on that setup.
My migration from DOS and Windows 3.11 to Windows 95a was because of Diablo 1.
My migration after that was because of new OSs.. Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows XP.. I bought 2 comps over the course of XP's lifespan.. 1 per OS otherwise.
Vista's move would more have to do with keeping my "new comp every OS" ideology. My 2 comp over XP was because of the "run everything at max settings" type of mentality.. and as I have become more fanatical in my PC gaming mainstay I find it more of a hobbie than "necessity" to play a game.. This may have been true about a good 10yrs ago.. but not now.
Ok well my previous system, I upgraded from some old Pentium with a FX5600 to a 6800Ultra with an AMD 3800+ so I could play HL2 and Doom 3, now I upgraded from that to what you currently see in my sig to play the 2 top games on my mind, Crysis and World in Conflict.
I upgraded last year to a radeon x1600 (the cheapest card I could fine with shader model 3 support) to play splinter cell double agent. As my luck would also have it just before I take my PC to the shop my harddrive decided to commit suicide and I had to get a new one (which was painful).
Anyways as for the future I'm holding out for crysis before I make the vista jump and with any luck the dx10 cards should have come down in price by then a bit.
btw for vista should i upgrade my ram from 2gb to 3gb? because i hear vista is really wasteful with system resources.

So far recommended would be 1GB but even with 2GB which is becoming pretty much standard as far as gaming goes.. I would recommend 4GB for Vista... this "should" be enough for at least 2yrs, perhaps more. Yes there is an FPS drop with games currently over 2GB .. but those issues will be of the past in a year or so..
Whatever is considered "more than enough" usually means "standard".. going beyond usually gives more longevity to your comp.
Of course this depends on your budget as well as your "sticking with what is recommended/consensus" viewpoint.
Oblivion
I went from an Athlon 3000+XP with a ATI 9700 Pro AGP and 1 GB RAM
-to-
an Athlon X2 4400+ with an ATI X800XL PCIe and 2 GB Ram
Haven't upgraded since and don't plan on it anytime in the next year or so.
....... Splinter Cell : Double Agent. Loaded the demo one day, and then found it wasn't going to play without the 3.0 shaders; so I ran out and picked up a X1650Pro (512MB), and since I was "upgrading", threw in another couple more gigs of RAM ( for a total of three). Hopefully I'm good to go for at least a few more months.
i used to have a 5700LE and the game that made me upgrade my vc was Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, now i have an Ati X800XT !!
:D
Quake 1 alone was responsible for SO many voodoo 3DFX card purchases, I was one of them. It was the Crysis of its day.rpg9000owner
Quake 1 didn't need a vid card to run.. all it did was make the water appear reflective
This was also true in Diablo 2.. the 3Dish like appearance.. Only games like System Shock 2 and Decent 3 required a 3D card..
