Do I have to turn off my computer every night when I'm not using it?

Usually I just keep it on and let the screen turn off itself. What do you guys do?

Why wouldn't you turn it off? I don't understand people who leave their PC on, overnight, if they don't need to. I only leave my PC on if I'm downloading something, but that is usually done on my HTPC, which uses much less power.

Yeah, I shut it off during the night. It only takes 5 second to shutdown and maybe 30-45 seconds to boot so it's no big deal.

For those who say that constantly booting will kill off your HDD in time... well mine has gone through over 2200 power cycles. My PSU about 1500 cycles.

This. It's not a hassle to turn it off and it saves your electric bill.

Turning your computer off is for newbs. My computer hybernates after 1 hour of no use. I like being able to wiggly my mouse and have my computer be totally usable within 10 seconds.

Yes, I turn it off at night. Mainly because of: 1.) Electricity Usage - what good is running an idle computer overnight while it sucks away at electricity? 2.) Dust - Dust sucks. I don't need anymore. There was a point in my life where I ran nicely configured "gaming" Dell 24/7 for weeks at a time, but the thing ended up dying. I suspect it was dust + heat build up.

I never turn it off.. Psu fan is a bit dodgy atm so I'm waiting for a new one in the mail, if i turn it off and then on the psu fan churns extremely loud for about 5 minutes, so i don't really have the option to turn it off till i get a new power supply

this is also why i got my SSD in my computer instant on instant off and no waiting for the pc to warm up, which is why i figure most people leave theirs on over night

Doesn't make sense, keeping it running actually prevents dust to settle in the mecanism. In my experience, I've seen a lot more of people shutting down their comp, and just not being able to boot it back up afterward. Anyway, I always leaves it on because elictricity bill is cheaper than SSD and a lot faster not to boot.

Huh? If you turn your PC off, you won't have dust being drawn through the case and heatsinks.

as long as the dust settling on the hardware problem is concerned a monthly maintenance check will suffice to solve it and these maintenance checks can be done at home without the need to pay any expert

I think putting the PC to sleep would be best so you don't have to worry about booting back up, but you don't have to worry about it wasting electricity when you're not using it. I adjusted mine to go to sleep after an hour.

well sleep mode for me. i used to have to shut it down completly as my old wireless dongle would randomly wake it up from sleep mode (even when i told windows that it couldnt wake it up). really annoying at 4AM in the morning. but i have replaced that and i use sleep mode now. very handy. though recently it has picked up the habit of not sending a signal to my monitor after wakeing up. its a very rare issue mind (its only happened twice in the last month or so) but still a bit annoying.

In my experience sleep is the best option, i just have it set to go to sleep after an hour and require a password to power it up again. I turn it off at night or when i know i won't be on it for a while i don't mind waiting an extra minute for it to power up.

If you have a modern motherboard there's no reason to shut down instead of sleep. The difference in power usage between the two is almost non-existent, but you get to boot up in a couple seconds if you decide to use sleep. That's why I never understand why anyone would routinely shut down their computer or brag about SSD boot times (that's the absolute LEAST important reason to buy one)

I sleep my computer if i'm going to use it in the same day. It is always off overnight. It only takes 1-2 mins to boot fully so i don't get the point of wasting power.

antec 1200 case and 2 hd 4890's are a little to loud to be left on over night in the room.
