So I am planning to build GIGABYTE GA-P61-USB3-B3 I7 2600k Antec Twelve Hundred 4GB DDR3 GSkill 1333 Mhz Corsair Gaming Series 800W WD 2TB Caviar Green (would like to use my current 500GB drive as a secondary if possible) Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio I am planning to buy the GPU first, I just don't know what brand is the best to get the 7970 for, or if the planned build is ok. Thanks in advance.

Well I would drop the i7 to a i5 2500K (no real differences) , then drop the Antec 1200 case for a newer case like a Antec DF 85 or HAF 932 etc. Then you might as well go for 8gb of memory, Drop the 2tb WD green drive (slow). Dont need a sound card, and for a 7970 brand XFX or Sapphire

I'm going to second this motion. I would also split up that 2TB HDD into a couple HDDs. Everything else highlighted I also agree with.

Besides what's already been mentioned, the Sandy Bridge platform gets a performance boost from using faster RAM. Low voltage, low latency 1600MHz DDR3 RAM is about the same price as 1333MHz RAM.. $39.99 - Wintec One 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600MHz RAM (1.5v, Cas9, Lifetime Warranty) Also, I would recommend getting a nice SSD for your OS and games with the money that you save by getting an i5-2500k instead of an i7...

Wait 2 months for Kepler to launch. Use the $150 you save from buying a i5 2500k instead (it's just as good for gaming) and get a Nvidia 680 graphics card. It will give you far better performance.

I didn't even notice that. You should definitely get a P67 or Z68 board. Z68 boards allow the use of integrated graphics, but P67 boards perform slightly better, so I would get a P67 board personally...

You really believe that? Ok, I'll adjust my statement. Wait until Kepler releases and see how well it performs. Even if it doesn't do amazingly, older cards will undoubtedly drop in cost some so it's win-win.

i5 2500k

8GB ram

Think about whether you need the sound card. If you use decent headphones or do music editing/producing it'll be worth it.

Sapphire have yet to let me down. You could wait for a GTX680, but the premium you tend to pay for Nvidia and how these cards are good for several years (given the limitations of so many games) the (likely) cheaper 7970 is likely to be a better use of money.

(Although you could probably argue that a 7870 would be even better in terms of price/performance, but that's possibly for another thread!)

Thanks for all replies so far, is this a good P67 board? Just because I have never heard of it's brand http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=P67%20Pro3%20SE&cat=Specifications

Nah, stay away from the SE revision. The VRM/mosfet design is definitely lacking power. The same holds true for Z68 boards in this price range. So for longevities sake, and for more overclocking potential in your price range, stick with the cheaper P67 boards. Here are some much better P67 boards in the same price range that have very robust power designs for powering the CPU... If you're only planning on using a single GPU, then the ASRock P67 PRO3 (B3) is an excellent choice at only $99.99. The ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Performance is also an excellent single card board, though it's a bit more expensive at $129.99.. If you want the option to go Crossfire later down the road, then the Foxconn "Quantum Force" Rattler is the best Crossfire board in your price range at only $129.99. But it doesn't support SLI, only crossfire. If you want the option to go either SLI or Crossfire, then I would recommend getting the ASRock P67 EXTREME4 GEN3 motherboard. It costs a bit more at $149.99, but you'll have the option to switch to nVidia if they're better for the price when you decide to upgrade your videocard(s)...
