Hey all,

I've just started playing Bioshock and I love the beginning, from the plane crash, to getting into the lift to take you into rapture, and hearing Andrew Ryan saying, 'Is not a man entitled to the sweat of his brow?' Loved it. Great atmosphere and colours. I am relatively new to gaming so name your best game beginnings please.

Homeworld's opening 3 missions are great, but very sad. With Half-Life, it starts out as you coming into work, which made the game very immersive since such an interactive opening hadn't really been done like that before in an FPS.

Bioshock is a good one.

Half-Life, Half-Life 2, and Fallout 3 are the ones that immediately spring to my mind. Others I can think of are all console games.

Great thread, and I agree that Bioshock opening was wonderful. Grand Theft Auto 3 was also note worthy from the moment I first enter the Kuruma with 8-Ball and started flickering through the radio stations; I knew from there I was in for something special. IIRC there are few games with incredible beginnings if we're speaking specifically PC, but if there's something I will like to add it will certainly be any Metroid game. When I hear that signature theme of Metroid on mission ones I know it's time for a thrilling atmospheric adventure.

Metroids indeed has the best beginnings, and here's a demonstration buds, marvelous! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41xAx6-lmkU#t=4m18s

...am i missing the point of the thread? I thought it was the begining not the first level, because in both half life and far cry 2 you just wait till the train/car stop moving. That was a joke dont take it too seriously guys.

Arkham Asylum.

It's clear that Rocksteady has been studying Valve. The intro is very similar to the original Half-Life. There's a long sequence in which The Joker is strapped to his chair and is being wheeled through the asylum while the credits roll. Here, you're being introduced to the story. You're in control of your character and yet you're being funneled through an area in which you will soon re-trace your steps. This area will be utterly transformed upon your return visit - just like in Half-Life.

I was pretty much blown away by the intro to Arkham.

If I had to choose another game, I'd say the first game I ever played, a text-adventure called Wishbringer: "You're standing on a hilltop overlooking the seaside village of Festeron. A post-office lies to the south of you. Somebody inside is the post-office is calling your name..."

Pokemon Red and Blue. The lead expert on Pokemon not only has serious memory problems, but he's perfectly content with a grandson named "Ass" or "Douche." Then you give him the finger, take Charmander, and proceed to enslave 150 different kinds of animals for your inner Michael Vick.

Killzone 2 was one of my favorite console FPS games, and it had one of the greatest intros in my opinion. Even though Rico is an annoying whore.

Yeah I really like how Oblivion started. A dungeon chase with Captain Picard!

I feel like there's been a lot of great game openings, but I just can't remember any specific ones. Doom 3 felt really tense at the start because you knew what was about to happen and all the anticipation of waiting for a sequel over all those years really built up. COD4 was really well done too.

Bioshock indeed has a great game beginning, as many of you have pointed out already. I would say God of War 1 has a terrific debut gameplay experience : you start off on a wrecked battleship, with a fierce raging storm in the background and sunken ships basked in all of their misery as a backdrop, when you are suddenly assaulted by minions of the Underworld, only to meet shortly afterwards the legendary Hydra of Greek Mythology, facing it at various occasions throughout your trek in the first level and coming to a grand, battle finale showdown with the beast. Epic.

I was talking about the Emperors speech But i get your point about the dungeons, in that kinda game you wanna start off wondering like morowind and not in a dungeon.

Bioshock certainly does have a great intro. FEAR was also one of the great intros, along with both Half-life games.

Anybody remember these intros?

Descent- Freespace

Omikron- The Nomad Soul

Bioshock and HL1 + HL2 (HL2 kinda pays homage to HL1's train ride, but has a whole dimension of its own).

FEAR 1's beginning was also quite good.

Oblivion made quite the impression on me. The scene when you leave the sewer finally and see the open world ... jaw = dropped. Batman: AA had a very cinematic opening as well. Very well done.

Half-Life
Half-Life 2 (basically a series of moments, like a three hour ride of no-stop excitement till you get a break!)
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
BioShock was pretty grand, I agree
Doom 3 had a pretty great start till you met with Sergeant Kelly again and it became pretty average since then.

I think people saying F.E.A.R. are probably referring to the awesome cinematic sequence underneath the opening credits, as opposed to the bit where you're standing still in a briefing room.

If you want to be technical... :)

I was thinking mostly of the first real mission where you have scramble off the sinking ship. It was intense!

of recent games, Batman AA's intro was better than average. It was kind of Halflife-like. Instead of slowly riding into Black Mesa scoping out the surroundings to the credits, you slowly escort Joker into AA and listening to his witty dialogue.
