It's certainly impressive, but dual Titans in SLI do considerably better than that.  Dual Malta 7990s means quad-CF and all the problems that 4 GPUs bring.  Tons of negative scaling for instance.

Though the bright side is that AMD is not releasing multiple >=$1000 GPUs per year as nVidia is doing, at least if the rumors are true.  :P  Lol.

Would like to see a single-GPU AMD card to compete with Titan.

we have our first benchmark of the hd 7990 revision based on the new malta core. in 3dmark 11 (extreme preset) it wastes the nvidia similarly priced and configured competition by minimum 15%

^ Yeah I'm interested to see the "next 7970" GPU in price/performance from AMD. I might go AMD next-gen if things look great.

I really wonder where next cycle's GPUs are going. Optimizations can be made to improve efficiency but without a new manufacturing process I don't see Nvidia putting more than 7B transistors on an even bigger die. We saw a similar situation with the HD 6000 series. AMD cut the bulk off of some of its cards and improved efficiency and introduced the HD 6970 which bulked up its architecture to compete with Nvidia. Perhaps the same thing is in the works, AMD has a huge die up its sleeve?

Damn, Nvidia got bit in the ass with this. The price is probably less than 1000$ too.

To be fair isn't it a dual gpu? The titan is pretty damn fast for one gpu alone i'm sure two sli'ed would beat the 7990 easily.

TwistedShade
True but aren't they going to be the same price ? (it would make sense to compare the titans along with the GTX 690 since all three cards are in the $1000 range).

I think it's fair considering you would have to pay another $1000 just to beat it.

True but even than the 7990 will surely come with problems having to be Xfired and it may run hotter and louder than the Titan.

This reminds me.. of Anandtech article. Latency is just as important! :)

Is that a dual GPU card? If so the numbers mean nothing until AMD fix their frame latency issues. No point having 100fps if it looks like 30fps.

So should I buy another 7970 for Trifire or get one of these babies and Quadfire? Decisions. Decisions.ShadowDeathX

Is it me or does Tri-Fire scale very well? Very few benchmarks out there to go by. If AMD can tap into the power potential with excellent drivers like they have been saying since January, it could be a very good thing.

I heard of the dread blue screen for tri-fire multi-monitor setups since last September.  Not sure how things are now but I'm sure you could look that up.

Real world power consumption for 7970 tri-fire.

The Test Rig: (For power consumption reference)

  • ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z
  • i7 2600K @ Std settings
  • 3x AMD 7970HD in Tri-Fire @ std settings
  • 2x 240GB OCZ SSD's
  • 3x 1TB Velociraptors
  • Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 @ 1866
  • XFX 1250W PSU
  • 1260 & 360 Radiators fed with D5 pump
  • A few lovely lights... lol

Results as follows:
(All settings maxed for each game, using eyefinity at 5760x1200)

Benchmarking:

  • 3D Mark 11 (Performance) 880w
  • Heaven 2.5 898w
  • 3D Mark Vantage (Performance) 906w
  • Furmark on 3 screens 908w
  • Aida 64 stability test - 1092w

Gaming:

  • Mass Effect 3 - 565w
  • Shift 2 unleashed 570w
  • Syndicate 580w
  • Skyrim 620w
  • Hawx 2 641w
  • Alan wake 720w
  • Crysis 2 780w

Impressive, but I'd rather have a Titan because it has a single GPU and my preference goes to Nvidia.

Triple GPU setups scale well. The problem most of the time is Quad GPU setups.

None the less, if I get a third 7970 or a 7990, the dreaded AMD frame time problem will go bye bye.

I'm going to have to upgrade my power supply. I think 1300 watt power supply is good enough for three 7970's or 2 7970s + 7990.

If it's like nVidia Tri-SLI it's definitely hit-and-miss.  Sometimes fine scaling, sometimes poor scaling, and in some cases even negative scaling.

I remember when Heaven 4.0 benchmark was released one guy I knew was getting lower scores with 3x 7970 than he was getting for 2.

Reviews are up. Looks like I'm NOT getting one. Was expecting something much better for $1000 or at least, $800 for it's current performance.

Time to go buy another 7970. Tri-Fire here I come!

Performance per watt is bad.
