There was a rumour on another board about EA charging $5 for a demo.

Most people have written this off as pure greed but lets look at another angle.

Games are expensive and over-priced but wouldn't it be better to pay $5 for a demo rather than paying $80 or $90 (au) and be disappointed?

Demos used to be more prominent but today games are more expensive to make than ever before and piracy is bigger too.

Companies are reluctant to release demos because they fear that people won't pay for the full game.

Does anyone else think that a paid demo could be a good balance between giving players a chance to try the game and giving something back to the company?

I did have a lot to say until you said something about giving back to the company. XD I think people would just rent games if demos started costing money. Also if you guys are curious about what EA did here's some images:

It is a good way to give back money to the company, although I don't like the fact that EA is the one that decides to do this even if it was on accident. EA starting a trend in marketing games is bad news to me imo.

not a snowball's chance in hell. And that EA $5 demo was a glitch in their system, not greed. Gamers are too quick to put on that tin foil hat

There used to be loads of demo's on PC. Now there are next to none.

I have no way to back this up, but this has lead to a serious increase in piracy. As people want to try out the game and how well it runs on their system, before buying. If there is no demo, people will seek other ways...

If you're gonna make people pay for demo's (which consoles are already doing, as you need Xbox Live to get demo's early) you'll only cause more piracy.

The last I heard this was all a mistake with the marketplace system. EA isn't charging any money for demos.

Well, EA has gone low down to such level that they've charged you actual money for Dead Space 3 cheats. so... I guess why not?

I wouldn't mind paying for a demo if I got a discount off the final product.

No way demos should be free. Hell back in the day it was called shareware and they gave you 1/4 the entire game as a "demo" for free

Not bought a computer mag for years but do they still do demos on there. They used to be about 15 with some apps and other stuff as well. This was about £5 I think with the mag it self. I use to buy PC Zone or Gamer every month.

I thought it was a mistake by EA because they were still free on other platforms?

Either way, It's terrible and should never happen.

I would rather take a free demo. Which is how things are SUPPOSED to be.

You played demos to know if you wanted a game.

Not the garbage Trailer and Lets Play generation we have created.

Irrelevant. There's only one game I want from EA in the foreseeable future.

It wasn't a rumor they were actually charging for at least two demo's but they took it down and clarified that it was an error. It's ridiculous to charge for a demo, it defeats the purpose of a demo.

People need to... Seriously need to stop hoping on the propaganda being thrown around.

Developers make superb money and the companies earn millions for their games. If the game fails it fails there's no one to blame. Piracy and game costs are irrelevant... If your game is good enough it will sell millions and you will make profit. I mean for the love of god some of games like GTA5 made a $1 billion dollars.

Developers are using piracy as a form of propaganda to get game prices up.

"Rising costs"... "piracy"... You people are gullible as f***. These developers make one game and buy a house with their wages. Cliff Blazinski f***ing retired at the age of 38 in a mansion and with enough money to start his own studio. Day Z made Dean Hall $5.7 million.

Would I support a $5 demo?... Are you f***ing crazy?

It was a pricing error.

I might consider it ONLY if I could get that $5 taken off the retail price of the game if I went on to buy it. But even under that condition that's a LONG stretch.

No, I'm more likely to wait for a good Steam sale where I can pick up the whole game for $5.

doesn't matter now..people are gonna keep wondering if it was a "test" to see if people are willing to spend money for a demo.

To be honest im surprised demos are still a free affair
