Alright, I'm getting back into PC gaming, I've been gone so long, I have no idea what the best way to connect the PC to the monitor.

HDMI, DVI, VGA, or DisplayPort; what do you guys use? I will be using an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4gb as my video card.

Thanks for the help in advance!

I've always been a fan of DVI to be honest.

Okay I understand that VGA is analog, which is not anything that I am looking for. Are there benefits to DisplayPort, DVI, and/or HDMI, or are they pretty much a wash?

As long as it is digital for being able to view HDCP content, it depends on your monitor.

Displayport is newest

Then HDMI

Then DVI

...then VGA

Displayport and HDMI both support audio I think. DVI does not. Display port is required for G-Sync, as well as for 4K 60 Hz (not sure about HDMI or DVI updates)

VGA pretty much just sucks.

Depends what resolutions you want to put out.

If it's just normal gaming then go DVI. I've had issues sometimes with some monitors using HDMI.

It also depends on the monitor and if you want to take advantage of things like G-Sync (needs DisplayPort I think)

Okay thanks for the information folks. I'm asking because I purchased my PC, but I'm still looking for the right monitor. I'm thinking that I should just go ahead and get a monitor with DisplayPort capabilities. I would be looking to max out as many games as I can at the moment, more than likely I won't be doing much upgrading in the future, so I might as well max out the games while I can :)

Here is what my PC will have:

AMD FX-8350 4.00 GHz

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4GB

8 GBs RAM (this is one area that I may upgrade)

240 GB SSD (1 TB standard HDD for data)

I use display port with my Swift because it is the mandatory (G-sync) and only connection port on it. However, I have an LG 1080p that I am able to OC to 72hz through HDMI, but I can not OC with DVI and have to run it at 60hz. So, if you are OC your monitor, HDMI seems better than DVI.

@Jr14: Ha good point! Yes I am fairly certain the Vid Card has a DP out. Thanks for the input!

@BassMan How do you overclock a monitor? I think I would definitely like to take advantage of G-Sync, would you suggest a Swift?

@Samslayer: Yes, ROG Swift is a great monitor and worth every penny. There is also an Acer 1440p G-sync IPS monitor that is supposed to be good as well.

As for overclocking a monitor.... It is in the Nvidia control panel. When you create a custom resolution, you can set the refresh rate. Don't worry about breaking the monitor. If it can't handle it, your monitor will just show an out of range message or blank screen and then it will revert back to the last setting that worked.

If you're going for a monitor with a higher refresh rate, I'd stay away from HDMI. From what I've read, it's not capable of delivering resolutions above 720p @ 120hz.

I've heard that as well @jimmyjammer69. I think I am definitely going for either DVI-D or DisplayPort. I just have to decide on the monitor now. Looking through amazon and newegg, I don't think need like the ROG swift, but I would like something 1080p and over 60hz. I am really considering the ASUS vg248qe. I like the price point, and it seems to have everything I want. I would even be able to upgrade the monitor with a G-sync kit in the future if I want.

What do you guys think of the ASUS vg248qe?
