The Purpose of this thread is purely to discuss and recomend free mmorpgs so any of us hovering in between games can try to find something to pass the time while we wait for our next big title (or pay package :P). I know there are hundreds of free korean ones, but please try to reccomend ones with more than 1000 english speaking players
-Please add to this thread and I will update this list to include the title and any description of the game you provide. If you know of one worth playing please provide details and try to describe the gameplay (grinding etc) and which games it resembles.
-Please don’t flame my and other users opinions. everything not within quotation marks is my own opinion of the game and I have tried not to criticise the games unfairly. It's not that I don't want to be flamed but I want to keep it on topic and concise ( and pretty comprehensive).
-Please don’t list betas that will end within 1 month. Well you can if you want but i was hoping for freeware or things that will be free for a length of time

"You can explore a totally new and unknown world you have never been to, put on beautiful clothes and gorgeous accessories, and even attract other users in the process. You may begin the journey to explore the world of unknown alone, but you may come out on the other end with numerous new friends through hunting and chatting. If you're tired of hunting and competition, how about playing minigames with a friend for a change?"
A very simple game, both in looks and gameplay. It really is like playing a mmorpg of zelda crossed with mario... with chatrooms or something thrown in. But combat, controls and character progression aren't that deep and I suspect this would ultimately leave it unrewarding.

"This MMORPG uses the first ever player-generated mission system, and combines it with sophisticated economics and complex player politics for a new kind of online experience. Only your ability to shoot, bargain, politic and otherwise duck and deal will advance your character’s private or corporate agenda. The success of each and every mission will determine your rise to the top, or your fall into obscurity. Whatever path you take in this astonishing world, plan well: one day, one minute or a single second could bring you to your destiny as the true Face of Mankind."
A very interesting sounding rpg that includes gameplay of fps and rpg style and a large city background, somewhat resembling bladerunner/anachronox. The exp gaining and so on is predominantly based around the quests/duties set by other players... and if you don't like your duties then you can just find ways of exceeding the rank of your boss and give whatever duties spring to your mind... I think the game masters have been known to step in and create more productive missions.
--- Kal Online: http://www.kalonline.com**Worth a Download** (in my opinion)
"KAL Online , a FULL 3D MMORPG, brings a new genre of Oriental Fantasy to the players.KAL Onlinehas oriental sentiment and culture in a fantasy world. Most current games based on western fantasy, Sciece Fiction, etc.but KAL Online can make the players to have a new experience. The story of KAL-Online is based on oriental myth about the 74th war between "Ha-Nin", the great king and “Ban-Go” who challenged to the king with troops of demon.‘KAL-Online’ will be a model of oriental fantasy game ; it represents the oriental sentiment well."
Quite a good looking game... considering its free. I think it looks like a suped-up version of Knight Online. However there are only 3 classes and apparently it's not hard to find a "carbon copy" of yourself running the other way in the street. This is a good quality game for a free mmorpg and a lot of people reccomend it.

"The minute you acquaint yourself with the white clouds and the eagles in the sky, you’ll find yourself caught in the charm of a true 3D online game. Knight Online is the firsr game to successfully introdyce the "Party System"in Korea. Raising your character’s level, acquiring new items, and becoming the strongest player should not be all that an online game has to offer. We invite you to the World of Knight Online, where you’ll find a player with better game manners may become more respected than a player with expensive items; in a party system where you help your fellow
players to advance. A prominent and exciting feature of Knight Online is the involving, persistent, large-scale war between players."
You may be forgiven for thinking the game looks drab from the screenshots and indeed the terrain did seem rather dull. Two races to choose from, each race has 3 sup-species and each sup-epecies has a limited selection of classes it can choose ( 4 classes in total). Leveling involves a lot of grinding and there are issues with there not being many english speaking players. It plays much like a standard 3D 3rd person mmorpg, if I can call it that and the interface and class skills work quite well.
I would reccomend you try Kal Online first as its somewhat of a suped-up version of Knight Online.
--- R.O.S.E Online (Rush on Seven Episodes)http://www.roseon.com**Worth a Download** (in my opinion)
screenshots: http://www.roseon.com/Community/UserSShot.asp
Client: http://www.roseon.com/Pds/Down.asp (zip and exe both ~365MB) VERY VERY SLOW DOWNLOAD (in my experience) get a download manager like getright, but DONT use any download accelerator functions as this may corrupt the file (that's what happened for me with Ragnarok Online)
"The ultimate goal of R.O.S.E Online is to learn more your role as a Visitor, and take an active part in the world of R.O.S.E Online as the main story unfolds. Depending on your discoveries and actions, you may either play an involved role in the main story, or have your own adventures."
"Players can form groups and compete for dominion over the seven planets. Unlike a small scale war, such as a guild war in which players fight for the possession of castles, players can take part in a huge war in which the fate of an entire planet is at stake."
"Every change in the game, such as Item price, monster spawn rate, MVP monster spawn rate or the weather, is dramatically influenced by the actions of the users. Every major event that occurs on the 7 planets is recorded on the official website. The names of characters that played key roles in these events are displayed on the official website so that they may receiverecognition as legends."
Everybody should try this game. It's very... endearing.... very cutesie.... and quite fun. It feels like playing a mmorpg of Kingdom Hearts or Dark Chronicles and although it may seem quite immature to some players..... I really quite enjoy playing this game :) The game does require more or less the same specs as Halo Combat evolved... so anything newer than 1 and a half years old should be able to handle it. If anyone was quite interested in ragnarok online... but couldn't quite bear the poor graphics, then this is the game for you. It features 4 basic jobs and each of these can then branch off into 1 of 2 advanced jobs. A job system in any game is always a bonus for me (FFtactics and Vandal Hearts I were cool cuz of this feature).
The game will take quite a while to download as the client download seems to be hosted on hamster powered wooden modems... but get a downloadmanager and just leave it downloading at 5kbs or whatever while you play some other game and it should be done within 5 days. The game is level based and gaining xp is achieved predominantly through grinding... though there are some quests and the ones that don't involve hunting monsters are well designed cutesie little quests like going off to get ingredients for a poison cure and coming back and giving the antidote to the villagers in teh starting village. The quests are rather basic and maybe immature and cutesie compared to say the instance quests in WoW... but they are quaint and add to the feel of the game/
This is an open beta however (the game will be p2p eventually... but that is 1 year + away) and unless I am seriously mistaken, this will be one of the next big mmorpgs of the future (probably bigger than Ragnarok Online... so maybe 1-1.5 million players wouldn't be a crazy guess)
