To me, it depends on a person's beliefs. But if one thinks that death is the true end of life, and that there is nothing after, the penalty is effective. But yet, isn't a punishment supposed to make a guilty person learn from their mistake through suffering and justice? If one dies, what has been learned? If one believes that there is no life after death, what's the point of losing life if you'll never exist afterwards to know how it feels to have no life? If one believes in life after death, the death penalty would make more sense since they will be in the hands of God's justice.

Regardless, I believe that the death penalty is wrong. A punishment is meant for someone to learn from their mistakes, and if that person can not be trusted again, they should be sentenced to jail for life. That way they can atleast reflect on their mistakes and try to improve with the life they have. What has been learned if someone kills a person that has killed? Eye for an eye doesn't seem right to me. What do you think?

I think the death penalty is wrong, too. I try to justify it, but the act is simply irreversible. I would rather the prisoner spend the rest of their lives in a cell. The act of killing is just wrong.

Homicide is illegal and death is the penalty. Kind of contradicts itself doesn't it.

I'd prefer them to spend the rest of their lives locked up in a cell, with as little human contact as possible. Just enough food to sustain them, etc.

Certain crimes like rape and murder should have violent punishments and then the people should be laid to rest permanently after enough suffering. I find ti ridiculous beyond proportions that people actually pitty murderes and rapists. The biggest pro they are going to bring is the decrease in said no. of crimes. Afterall what is a person with no life lsing by lifetime prisonment? And what is an atheist losing by trying to make his miserable life good and die trying it.

I'd much rather have him be put in jail for life. Or anything to make him suffer the way he made people suffer. Killing him won't make him suffer, or atleast not for long. He won't understand anything.

Torture can make people wish they could die, and the torturer won't allow it. What is worse? Being alive and tortured each day, or having peace in death?

That would make sense...if it didn't take a 15 year waiting list on death row.

People naturally fear death. Let's assume that life in prison was a higher punishment than the death penalty. If you kill 3 people, you get the death penalty. If you kill 5 people, you get life in prison. What do you think a criminal would go for?

You're assuming people committing such crimes are thinking rationally. Then if they are thinking about it they would realize the likelihood of getting the death penalty is pretty low anyway.

I'm against on a moral and practical stance. I don't think we should be killing people regardless of what they do. They should have to live the rest of their lives and should reflect and learn from what they did. Besides, it's always possible they might have the wrong person on death road. On a practical stance the cost of death penalty alone is enough to make it a poor choice over life in prison. And the death penalty doesn't prevent crime. The only crimes that result in the death penalty are very severe, crimes that the threat of death isn't going to stop you from doing.

A nation with capital punishment has no right to make euthanasia illegal. Beyond that, I don't really have much of an opinion on it.

The justice system doesn't operate to just fulfill the requests of victim's families.

That last part isn't going to happen even under the current death penalty.

I'm against it. It costs more than imprisoning someone, rules out the possibility of using a criminal's knowledge during future investigations, and brings up the possibility of killing an innocent person.

Personally, Im for the Death Penalty. It is the ultimate punishment for someone and their crimes. I really don't think that life imprisonment works, furthermore why so we, the taxpayers, have to fork over our hard earned money for someone to sit in a room for the rest of their natural life.

You would have to fork over hard earned money to pay for further investigations before the criminal can even THINK about being executed, pay for the ridiculous amount of paper work that goes into this kind of thing, pay for the funeral, pay the family some sort of compensation, not to mention pay for the execution itself. I would say it costs just as much, if not more, to execute somebody rather than life imprisonment

Death penalty in rape should definitely be there provided there is total evidence of the rape. The only way you can "heal" a raped woman is by telling her that her raper no longer exists and not that he still drools in her thoughts in jail.:|
