I don't think I could do that. I'd go insane if I had to go off the grid for that long

johnd13

Hmm I think I could do it. I would spend my time reading books and working out.

Yeah I agree sounds easy.

that wouldn't be hard at all.. Poop in a lake, and remain smelly.. It's gross.. but very doable ... will be boring. ... but so worth it.

Hell yeah I would. Candles for lights, playing basketball outside during free time.....well, the only flaws I see in doing this is no music and no food refrigerated. I wouldn't have anywhere to put food given having no power for a fridge. And the lack of music may become maddening. Is this only for the house I live in or for everywhere I go?....

Maybe if I were in a warmer climate.   It gets dead cold here in winter and our fireplace doesn't heat much.

I'd do it for 10 million in my current area.   I could take a few months suffering for complete life freedom.

Yes, no questions asked, just throw me out in the wilderness and come back a year later with a bag full of cash.

I know its probably harder said than done, But I definitely would give it a go ! Maybe try to live on the streets or something :) take a sleeping bag and blade with me and sleep in the local park.. Grab a meal once a day from the salvation army or something similar... If im not dead in 12 months I deserve my million..

A lot of brave souls in this topic but do you realize the huge sacrifices you'll have to make? No video porn Biking to work/walking Not being able to store food that needs to be refrigerated No music unless it is live. No electrical instruments. No batteries No heat. That's just torture imo

Wouldn't work be out of the question anyway? Most people's place of employment uses electricity in some way, whether it's an air conditioned office or an electronic timeclock. Those people would have to quit their jobs anyway, or at least take a whole year off. After all, you can't spend 40 hours a week sitting in an air conditioned office and still claim to have gone the whole year without electricity.

Yeah, TC didn't exactly explained the conditions of what he meant by going an entire year without power. Rather or not we are allowed to visit places that DO have power. Are we even allowed to visit a convenient store to get can goods or drinks....

If you mean live completely without electricity to include that I cannot go anywhere that has or uses electricity then pretty much no one can survive.

Regardless the answer is no, as an extra million doesn't mean much to me

At first I thought yes.

But the more I think about it, the more I realize I couldn't. You wouldn't even have a fridge....

TINYOWNSYOU

Whatcha need one of them for?

Cold food. Life without cheese just isn't worth it.

I think you can get fridges that run on propane or natural gas (along with almost all of your other appliances)

I would, assuming that I am still able to buy goods from places that use electricty, drive my car, and could get some of that money before hand so that I could get the supplies neccisary to live life without it. (Propane appliances, heaters, etc).

Absolutely. I'd just read the newspaper like Financial Times, Economist or WSJ so I would know exactly what to do with the money at the time once I got it.

Nope. No electricity means that you can't drive your car. Technically you also can't go shopping at the grocery store for the same reason that you can't work at the grocery store: The grocery store uses electric lights and has AC units which run off of electricity, so going there is cheating. I think the question implies a "cabin in the woods" scenario. You can heat your food with fire. You can even stock up on as many supplies and canned goods as you like before you go there (but you can't bring an ELECTRIC can opener, that's cheating). You're allowed to prepare beforehand, you're allowed to bring anything you want with you (just as long as it doesn't run on electricity).

The rules don't state that you can't prepare in advance. Even if there's no running water, you can stock up on bottled water.

If by electricity you mean also no working microwave, refrigerator, and stove, then forget it. Not worth it.

Anyway, my one condition here is that I be able to have a cell phone on standby. I don't have to USE it, and using it would violate the deal and void the million bucks. But I just want the ability to be ABLE to call for help if necessary. If I get deathly ill and need medical attention, then I pick up the phone and call for help. If I get mauled by a bear and wil die without medical attention, then I pick up the phone and call for help. Yes, those things will void the contract and I lose the million dollars, but that needs to be an option. If I am in imminent risk of dying, then I need to have the ability to pick up a phone and call for help. Because for me, losing a year of technology is worth it if I gain a million dollars (hell, that's actually an OPPORTUNITY), but none of that counts for squat if I DIE. There has to be some condition where if I think I'm going to die, I can call for help (even if that means losing the million dollars). I'd lose a year for a million dollars, but I wouldn't lose my LIFE for a million dollars.

If i had access to copious amounts of drugs and alcohol, then definately yes.

otherwise, no. At the very least i would need to have music to tide me over.
