I actually bought this topic twice years ago. But anyway, with all the media coverage of that gay college player hoping to be drafted in the NFL, this topic came up.

So I was wondering if a man was in need of mouth to mouth, what will you do?

Of course I would, and I think most everyone (who knows how) would.

On a related topic one of my scariest experiences was performing CPR to a 2 week old baby...even though I knew what to do, you're never ready for something like that...

Seems childish to deny life saving mouth to mouth breathers to someone because they might be of your same sex.

Only if he pays me upfront.

Just kidding, I would. But in any experience like this(male or female) I'd hope someone more experienced in CPR is around.

@AmazonTreeBoa: Because he'd be a stranger, a man, or because you didn't want the responsibility of the resuscitation going wrong?

yes, the purpose is to save lives not to look for an excuse to get lucky, and I doubt I could savor giving mouth to mouth to someone who's dying so I don't really see how sexual preference would matter

it's worth noting people should study up on basic CPR in the event it's needed, don't think you know it simply because you've seen it on TV

on the other hand, if you asked me if I'd give mouth to mouth to a disease ridden hobo, that's a different question

No I'd just let him die.... Of course I'd perform CPR, I couldn't just sit back and watch someone die. Even though the change of survival is only about 8% for those given CPR without the use of a defibrillator I'd still give it my best shot.

To me the last part is the only one that I could consider an issue. If you botch it up you might end up doing more harm than good and when a paramedic would get to the locale he/she might not be able to resuscitate the victim.

If you've never been trained in CPR then you should never under any circumstance attempt to perform it as you will most likely do more harm than good. If you've been trained however then you have an obligation, I think, to at least try and save the victim, no matter how slim their chance of survival is.

Agreed; luckily I only had to do it twice, but like I said in the beginning of the thread, one of those times was on a 2 week old baby...you're never really "trained" for that. (The baby was fine afterward, by the way =D)

@LittleMac19: You can always do the compressions without the breathing. The paramedic who taught me CPR said he always carried a bag valve mask with him wherever he went, even when he was off-duty.

The last first aid course I was on they said that now you don't have to do it, for legal reasons, but you are more likely to save someone's life if you do.

Yeah, when I was doing clinical rotations as part of a training grant, they said they no longer practice the breathing just chest compressions, although the number of compressions you have to do can be rather tiring (done to the beat of "Stayin' Alive")

"In a major change, the American Heart Association said Monday that hands-only CPR — rapid, deep presses on the victim’s chest until help arrives — works just as well as standard CPR for sudden cardiac arrest in adults."

"Ewy said there’s no point to giving early breaths in the case of sudden cardiac arrest, and it takes too long to stop compressions to give two breaths — 16 seconds for the average person. He noted that victims often gasp periodically anyway, drawing in a little air on their own."

Pretty sure he wasn't being serious, but rather pointing out the ridiculousness of your question. If people hesitate, I doubt it is because the person may be of the same gender, but rather that it is a rather huge responsibility to take a strangers life in your hands--and should only be done if you are properly trained. And the thread is pointless since recent CPR changes now only use chest compressions, no mouth to mouth.

1st of all sometimes there is truth into someone using sarcasm. The middle part of your statement is off, I mean you act like people are trained for something like this? Not to mention recent CPR changes. I'm quite sure I'm not alone in knowing their were new CPR methods.

And the best of example of my point is from that Seinfeld episode where Jerry and Newman struggled to give the pool guy mouth to mouth. sure it was comedy, but you cant deny there some truth to that on how most guys will react in a random situation like that.

Oh, PSP...

I don't think anyone who is in a situation to save someone's life would think it would make them gay for giving mouth-to-mouth to the same sex. If you think that, then you have major problems.

@themajormayor: How so?

EDIT: Oh, I see. English is not my first language so sometimes I don't quite notice the tone of what I write. It wasn't intended to sound like a threat, I actually meant it as a request. Like I said before, I hate having to moderate the threads I'm following, makes me feel like I can't keep commenting as a user.

Considering the rules in this case state the person should get a strike and a 1 day suspension I was asking them to stop with the insults so I wouldn't be forced to moderate them.

Thank you for the warning though; I will pay more attention to the tone of my replies in the future =)
