I noticed that most people who like Japanese dubbed anime are younger. They most likely grew up knowing that anime came from Japan. So naturally they grew up liking Japanese dub better than the English dub. The internet is much much more common nowadays, back in my day I had only 56k.

In my developmental psychology class it talked about what kids are exposed to when they are young changes how they are when they grow up. I can see kids nowadays being more likely to like Japanese dub. They knew about it at a much younger age than when I was. They got on the internet at a much younger age too.

I didnt know anime was from Japan till I discovered it myself looking on the internet.

I think being exposed at a younger age makes people like Japanese dub. What do you think?

I will always love English dub better in all aspects for all anime. I guess its how I grew up.

Glad to see that amine/manga is becoming more mainstream and getting dub faster and with manga they started to also release in english same day

I grew up watching Toonami with my brothers - Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, etc. I found out around when I was 8 or so that they were made in Japan but didn't even know about dubs until I was 13 or so. I usually watch subs now but don't care as long as the voice actors are decent.

I've seen both English dub and Japanese dub anime.

FMA did a very good job at dubbing the anime into English.

Other anime like Bleach, not so much. I didn't get that same emotional impact I got from the Japanese voice acting than I did with the English dub. The voice actors just weren't that good at screaming and making things dramatic sound heart pumping. Sound is a big part of it.

Attack on Titan was one of those Japanese voice acted anime shows that made my heart race multiple times, with the music, voice acting, and crazy suspenseful moments with crazy animations.

There are good english voice actors, but anime rarely use them. By the way, if something originally had Japanese voice acting it wasn't dubbed.

i find it funny! i watch dub to catch up on something then move over sub. BUT i find it annoying with male  charterers though. Take Goku for example. Dude is supposed to a god but his voice in Japanese sounds like a 7 year old boy...

Grew up on English dubs.
Almost exclusively watch original audio with English subs now. Just sounds more genuine imo. Will listen to English dubs if it's something that I watched when I was younger (like DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho).

When given the option of watching an anime dubbed in English I'll usually take it. I mean, I'd much rather watch than read my anime.

Besides, nowadays an English dub can easily match or even best the Japanese dub's performance.

I actually watched dbz in Chinese dub  before they toonami started airing. I discovered original dubbed about 10 years ago with Naruto which was the weekend where I watched ~80 episodes with my bro. There are few eng dubs where I would enjoy more than the original like shin chan, panty&stocking, pokemon, etc. though for the most part I like the original voices since is made with them in mind, so it seems more natural.

Some people would rather watch foreign media in their native language. I watch Police Story in it's Cantonese (Hong Kong) audio. Being said, there's nothing wrong with English dubbing if done right. I like DBZ and FMA (among several anime) in English dubs.

I'd rather listen to the native language in any medium. Actors that were picked by the actual creators are a better option than whichever of the half dozen voice actors a localization company picks by throwing darts.

Lip syncing is a huge handicap in games and animation. Translators are forced to go with whatever fits rather than the best choice, and actors have to throw their delivery out the window (or let the audio engineers do it for them in post-preduction).

People don't really seem to realize that though... Voice actors in things like Final Fantasy or Tales games tend to catch shit for poor performances, but the fact is that it's not necessarily a lack of talent, it's just the fact that everything is held back by lip syncing.

So yea, even with preferences of authenticity aside, until the localization process of games and animation includes lip syncing dubs will remain objectively inferior, and that holds true in any language.

Subs suck imo. I avoid them as much as possible unless the dub has a heavily altered script or REALLY bad acting. I cant take japanese voices seriously unless it has some particularly outstanding actors like the ones in Jojo.

You kind of make no sense to me. Anime dub is horrible, just HORRIBLE. The voice actors are not even trying. It sounds so ridiculous and goofy that I actually find it hilarious at times. I'm telling you this and I'm a 90s kid so I didn't have Internet access at a young age. I always knew anime originates from Japan, but it wasn't until 2005 that I had sufficient Internet access to download subbed anime. The moment I watched my first subbed anime episode I realized just how much subbed anime is superior in every possible way. Bottom line is, being exposed to either dubbed or subbed anime at a younger age has nothing to do with your anime preferences as an older you, the whole thing is just about accessibility followed by personal preferences and taste. There will always be mainstream people who will prefer shitty dubbed anime over subbed, its an unfortunate fact about the world's population  On a serious note though, its not just anime. I never watch dubs of anything whatsoever. Whether its Japanese anime, Hollywood movies and American series' or Scandinavian movies, any media production loses much of its essence in the dubbing process. The work's aesthetic, feel, context, atmosphere, settings...etc all get compromised in the dubbing process.

When I think of this...the only anime that pops through my mind is Sonic X,never say no to the superior JP version, because it fits the appetite, unlike the English dub. Just imagine IF the whole crew were those from the golden 1998-2005,it will go better than the money-greedy "4Kids" version, which could have nearly killed the entire franchise

Normally I would rather listen to it dubbed simply because I don't feel like reading subtitles with every one I watch. However, I will usually go the subtitled route if the dubbed one is censored. Dragonball Z is like night and day from the dubbed version and the original, for example.

I would rather watch anime with the actual japanese language because it is more authentic. I also like to read the subtitles because it keeps me watching it. However, whenever i am multitasking, I would listen to it dubbed so I would know what is going on. For example, playing video games whiles catching up on a few shows.

I like japanese language because it sounds better. US dubbed tends to be feel too kid-show cartoonish to me. I've been raised with japanese voice acting in anime and to me it feels right. I refuse to watch english dubbed anime, to me it ruins the atmosphere completely.

Why would you want something not be in your language?

k2theswiss

That only applies to US. To pretty much rest of the world, both english & japanese are foreign languages. Although I have no problem understanding english I still prefer subtitles (even my native language). Some shows like Game of Thrones are perfect examples why, during some big war or maybe when someone whisper, it can be hard to hear what they are actually saying. Not to mention their names, without subtitles I'd have no bloody idea how to spell any of their names.

Speaking of subtitles...
Additional reasons for subtitles are that in some games, subtitles show sounds that are otherwise impossible. I can't remember which game but I *think* it was GTA4. When you were talking with someone on the phone, you couldn't really hear what they were saying properly because the volume was so low but with subtitles you could read what the person was saying to you... Some games subtitle random persons (guard etc) conversations that you normally would have a very hard time listening to.

Anyway point is that where I'm from, we barely dub anything to our own language (THANK GOD FOR THAT BY THE WAY) and considering how the majority of shows on TV are english, we're exposed to subtitles every day. I don't know how it works for people not used to it but for someone that is used to it like me, it doesn't take away any concentration & immersion or whatever.

For me it kinda depends, usually I will want it to be in english, but every once in a while the Japanese voices just sound more appropriate. Naruto is a good example, in english (especially early on) Naruto's dialogue and voice pitch can be incredibly annoying, but the japanese version sounds pretty good.

Although Eren doesn't fit that category (squeeky voice) I just wanted to say (considering your avatar) that Eren is a good example of why I like japanese voice acting in anime. Often english dubs feel kinda half-assed but japanese voice actors go all out. Eren's voice is just so intense when he's angry, it really does sound like a guy completely absolutely mother******* furious. Compared to some dubs in other animes where the voice acting feels weak, it sounds too cartoonish, they lack that full out intensity. Wish I had some examples though... Am I really the only one that feels that way?!
