Why is America Prudish?

Other countries are pretty open about sex compared to us. Examples?

Sweden allows public masturbation

Germans love being naked in the beaches

European countries have comprehensive sex education

So why? Is it cause we only think of the negatives? Explains also why personal space is a big deal here.

American's aren't as prudish as TV and movies would have you believe. They just err on the PG side of things to avoid having to deal with that one loser at home who's offended from the time they wake up in the morning and spends their day writing letters to whoever happened to offend them that particular day.

Well that thread was actually about a trip to Vegas with the 18 yr old's boyfriend, which is different, but yeah, one of the worries was "staying over night with the boyfriend" which was just lol worthy.

As for the american prudence, I couldn't give an answer as to why, but it certainly seems to be true from what I've seen. For many people sex is some sort of taboo, and whoever dares to admit they like sex is asking for shame; at the very least this is the impression america often gives.

On a more serious note, it seems the U.S has a complicated relation with the subject of sex. As others have said already, there are still traces in present-day America of its Puritan ancestry, and when compared to other developed countries - such as Japan, Germany and Scandinavia for instance, the U.S sure seems to be still tiptoeing around the topic of sex. Sex education leaves much to be desired, and the general populace regards the topic with a measure of care and sensitivity.

Yet for a presumably prudish country, the U.S seems obsessed with sex. The subject is a staple of mainstream media, and pop culture is constantly shoving it down your throat. A couple of days ago I watched the pilot of Orange Is The New Black, and I was astounded by the amount of nudity and porn sex scenes in a freaking pilot. I've been taking notice of that phenomenon for a while now: American movies and TV shows have become bold in their approach to nudity, with hardcore sex scenes that are often of a contentious nature cropping up more frequently.

It'd be pushing the envelope to call the U.S prudish, despite its peculiar take on the subject.

As an American myself, I don't know why.

Yeah I never understood that either. How come all these "innovative" ideas start from the U.S but the U.S itself turns out to be the last country to fully adopt what it had previously proposed? It happens nearly every single time...

You sure about that? Sweden has nine million people. However, the European continent is around 740 million. I'm sure other people there would be grossed out by it.

I'm sure opinions vary among Europe's three-quarters of a billion people too. People earlier were saying it was banned in Sweden too. That doesn't mean they're prudish. It means they made a mistake and fixed it (hopefully).

I don't know about that. But if it's true then it's very ironic because they actually came to American for religious freedom.

The high percentage of religious people, of course. The prudishness increases as you go south. The areas most open to sex are likely in the West Coast (California, Washington, Oregon).

Puritans were among the earliest English settlers in Americas. They are ultra conservative when it came to sex. Check out The Scarlet's Letter.

Since when did cussing become its own language? I can see why it might be inappropriate for some settings, but who the hell cares if people are talking among one another and you get offended by a "bad word"?

Everyone needs to feel offended by something these days. It's one of the biggest and dumbest first world problems. Are peoples' lives so dull that they actively seek to be offended by stupid bullshit that hardly matters most of the time?

@gamerguru100: thank you, about time somebody says this, yeah exactly is pretty dumb, and of course people will use excuses such as "it can damage your skin" or "do you expect for a 6 year old to know what milf means?"when in reality a lot of words have diffrent meanings, for instance garbage can mean trash or poor quality sutff "this car is garbage" meaning is a poor quality car so "****" can mean either to have sex or many other things. America will pretty much the only country to give a deal about this.

Please tell me this isn't true.
