when you pay for basic cable, your options are pretty limited.
You can watch the news, which is informative, but boring and depressing and incredibly biased and lame.
You can watch various documentaries and stuff, but all that essentially boils down to "reality TV" eventually and drama and heavily edited (if not scripted) stuff as well.
Cartoons are fun, but they tend to be very niche and only last so long. Same thing with your sitcoms/drama/cop/scifi/action shows on NBC/FOX/CBS/etc
The end result is that the lowest form of entertainment is the easiest to watch, the stuff about famous people making idiots out of themselves. Because at the end of the day you can go "Hey, I may make only $40k a year, but at least I am not a prick like these jackasses".
And they're easy to market, and make boatloads of money off of. And there are a loooooooooooooooooot of idiots out there that take this stuff seriously.
