The media cares about sales, if people stopped buying into that crap, they would move on to something else. Hell, this forum is guilty of it with Justin Bieber threads and what not.

Why do people from other countries care what Americans care about? Don't you have your own weird, talentless celebrities put on pedestals for no reason?

It's not the masses that want to know, it's the media that wants to force celebrities on the citizen. The media doesn't want to portray "real" news so they show more and more celebrity news.

when you pay for basic cable, your options are pretty limited.

You can watch the news, which is informative, but boring and depressing and incredibly biased and lame.

You can watch various documentaries and stuff, but all that essentially boils down to "reality TV" eventually and drama and heavily edited (if not scripted) stuff as well.

Cartoons are fun, but they tend to be very niche and only last so long.  Same thing with your sitcoms/drama/cop/scifi/action shows on NBC/FOX/CBS/etc

The end result is that the lowest form of entertainment is the easiest to watch, the stuff about famous people making idiots out of themselves.  Because at the end of the day you can go "Hey, I may make only $40k a year, but at least I am not a prick like these jackasses".

And they're easy to market, and make boatloads of money off of.  And there are a loooooooooooooooooot of idiots out there that take this stuff seriously.

It pisses me off that anyone follows the lives of any "celebrities" anywhere.  It's just lame.  Worry about your life instead of watching what some person you don't know is shopping for.

I feel the same. Celebrity worship is so goddamn stupid. I don't idolize idiots who do idiotic things and get paid millions of dollars for it. Bieber and Kanye are narcissistic douche bags and the Kardashians are rich spoiled airheads with no business complaining about their so-called "problems".

Indeed. Kate Middleton's baby is getting too much attention. Why? Because said baby will be coming out of a royal vagina instead of a "peasant" vagina FFS, people need to shut up about it and move on with their lives.

On the whole media vs demand thing, think its pointless to argue who is to hold most of the blame. Both groups have personal responsibility and just feed into the problem. Put blame on both.

i think it's pretty strongly skewed to the demand side of things, imo.   media exists to make money, not just promote stuff for the hell of it.

I agree, honestly I could care less what people who live outside of reality think (that goes for sports stars as well.) I can barely stand what my neighbor thinks let alone someone who makes millions and millions of dollars a year. I don't say this to offend anyone, but I honestly think it's because it's easy. The media puts it out there, the masses don't have to think much to be involved in it. Considering that most things that require critical thinking are ignored by a huge group of people, it's not a far stretch to say people like simple things to debate over and not something that actually requires real thought.
