I never fully understood the whole less government is better argument, or the whole the government is evil argument. If you belong to this mentality please explain why you believe as you do, or if you don't, argue why you don't agree with anti-government point of view?

Because some people are nutjobs. As a conservative I'm for small government but to think the Government is evil is crazy.

Our founding fathers took great measure to limit the power of the government. That should tell you something. Power corrupts. The more you give to any form of government whether it is a republic, communist state, etc. the more chance their is for abuse. I have no problem with some government programs, but I just don't want too much.

Just imagine this. What if this were 8 years ago. Would you want George W. Bush and his republican congress having unrestricted control over your life? I just prefer to have the power stay with the people and not whatever political party is hot at the moment.

I was referring to the United States Government in particular, but any anti-government perspective is okay.

I'm not sure, there are just some things in life that set people off.

And we don't want things to happen like what Hitler did, or Kim Jon Ill.

Not really afraid of government. I just oppose measures that place to much power within the hands of few people with little accountability for their actions. There are practical problems for doing so.

I think the small government theory worked 100 years ago, when mult-national corporations did not exist. But now, most private companies are huge themselves, are run in the same way as governments and by the same kind of people.

I don't undertstand when American' say, "I dn't want the government involved with my healthcare" But what is the difference between the government and an insurance company? they are now, exactly the same thing.

You know what the government does? Hell, look what they did to me, they took my money and gave some of it to people who don't have all the socioeconomical advantadges that I was born with!!! Then they went and gave some of it to schools to educate children!!! Then they gave some of it to the community for beautification and facilities that benefit me every day of the week!!! Then they gave some of it to keep roads that I use every day paved, police and firefighters who keep my neighborhood safe paid, and the post office which I also use on a regular basis running. What reason could I possibly have to trust the government, those motherless ********!!!

I think it's understandable to have some skepticism towards the U.S. government. Like it or not the U.S. government has a long history of doing a lot of rotten things to people both domestically and abroad. Although I don't really understand fear of the government when it's enacting policies that a lot of people are going to benefit from.

Personally i prefer personal choice to being forced what to do even if what i'm being forced to do is benefitial. Also large goverments are expensive, have more places to break down and are more capable of medling in their own and other countries. Personally i want a small goverment of experts (actual generals, doctors and teachers) bound by a strict constitution. Though to regulate basic utilities such as power and communicatins there should be goverment owned companies that compete to have the lowest prices possible, though they would still act like a regular company in every other aspect including having to stay financially viable.

Because the Government lies to us and refuses to enforce our laws

It lied to us about Iraq, which has nothing to do with American interests

In the name of FREEDOM, we killed an upwards of a millions Iraqis

In the name of FREEDOM, we killed, maimed and mentally damaged thousands of American soldiers and families

Freedom for whom, exactly?

The Government. The freedom to kill and destroy nations.

Exactly.

These days, the Tea Party movement is the big deal, with its anti-big government rallies and its accusations that Obama is a socialist. Given that the average age of a Tea Party member is in the mid-40s and early 50s, I wonder what their tune will be in a few years, when they retire. If they're so set on limited government and an end to "state-sponsored socialism," I hope they're ready to give up their Social Security check, their Medicare A coverage, and the wheelchair ramps and handicapped parking spots that came from ADA.

If you want limited government, you have to be ready to give up the services. So, if a tornado, a flood, or a hurricane comes to visit your town, you're on your own. If Goldman Sachs torpedoes your 401(k) because of its shady dealings, don't go crying to the SEC. You're on your own.

If you're not willing to pay the taxes for the services, don't expect them to be there when you need them. And, yes, some day, you will need them.

A corrupt, powerful government is very difficult to remove or change, since they control the military and the methods by which officials are elected into it. I do not fear the government myself, but I suppose I can understand why some would, to a reasonable extent anyway.

Have people forgotten that this government, in the great words of Abraham Lincoln, is that "of the people, for the people, and by the people"? That we elect candidates to represent us in government? That we bestow certain people in this nation with this power?

The government of the United States is not some inhumane entity that people have no control over. We have the liberty to take interest in the actions of the people we elect and make them responsive to their constituents. We give them the power. The government does not give them the power. There shouldn't be any fears.

Really, the question that should be stated here is that "Why some people don't trust the government". Approval ratings for Congress and the President were always extremely high till the Nixon administration. When we learned that sometimes, the people we elect into office can lie and deceive. Evidence by the water gate scandel. We can even go back further actually, with the assassination of President John. F. Kennedy. When citizens learned that the people we elect in office are to be questioned since there are many details of the assassination that don't make complete sense and obvious discrepancies.

Anyways, what's being said here. We're not "afraid". We just don't trust the government at times. And i think it's important that people should recognize that we gave them these positions and we have the liberty to put someone else into the office in another election, or within state level a recall for a more immediate action.

Because they view the government as some superpowerful entity separate from themselves. They forget that they are the government. The government is neither superpowerful nor separate from the people that it governs.

I wonder what half of you would be saying if this thread was posted while Bush was in office.

It's pretty obvious supporters of Obama---and democrats in general---will laud the government no matter what it does. Just an observation.

Really...? How could you possibly turn this into a political thing? :?dreDREb13

I guess I'm a horrible person for pointing it all out. =[

But it's true. Because I know for a fact, as a conservative, I'd be much more inclined to put up with anything a Republican administration did than a Democratic one. Which is why I'm trying to be much more open-minded.

Regardless of our political stance, I doubt it would change much. :| If Bush were in office still, I wouldn't see them at all controlling anything, just like Obama isn't now.dreDREb13

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Deep down everyone is biased. It's extremely hard to be neutral when you believe in different things.
