Both countries have produced great music over the past several decades.

But which one do you think is home to the better musicians and bands?

Silly question. Texas alone is over twice the size of the UK. Comparing one to the other is hardly fair.

Still the answer is the UK. Obviously >_>

Both were great, but the UK music scene seems to have hit the skids since post 80s in terms of popularity.

It comes down to genres. I'm a thrash metal guy, so I'm more for the U.S. However, when it comes to anything pre-80's, then the U.K. takes the cake.

I'd say back in the day, 60's, 70's UK had the best, but nowadays, I'd say the US.

(Pinback, Cake, Strokes, Reel Big Fish)

I'm pretty sure they're all from America, most of them are from CA too haha.

The UK has a good electronic scene and decent-passable metal scene. Their rock and especially punk has been really weak in the last decade though. The US on the other hand has a pretty s*** electronic scene with dubstep and synthpop dominating as of late. Rock, metal, and other types of guitar oriented music are generally better here in the US than in the UK. Honestly out of those two I'd go with the US for the music I listen to.

On a sidenote, Canada has pretty great music all around as long as you avoid the radio.

For Japan since I don't like J-pop that leaves Japan's best with noise punk, math rock, and a few metal bands. That's about it for them in my opinion, and that's not enough for me to really give them the best overall.

Ehh admittedly I've listened to very little Japanese music, but most of what I've heard has been bad J-pop (but I repeat myself) and underwhelming metal. Now admittedly there's a couple of songs I like but I've found very little of interest... maybe I just haven't looked hard enough *shrugs*

Don't forget other big names like Sigh, Coffins, Infernal Revulsion, Gallhammer, etc. At least as far as metal goes.

I'd say that the U.S. put out more good bands recently than the U.K. did. Of course, it may have something to do with their 5-times larger population, but the question doesn't say "per capita".

Well, the least you could do is list a band that is actually good and not some generic Metalcore band. Try Iron Maiden, Carcass, Judas Priest, and Anathema.

What others are saying: U.S. is winning for recent bands.

U.K. definitely wins for the "before the 90s" age lol.

in the past the UK, but right now the US has a huge arsenal of great bands, indie rock alone in the us alone is massive, with recent bands that broke into mainstream like Death Cab For Cutie and such.

but as most of things in life, it's down to preference

Depends on the genre. UK dubstep is better, French House is best, US metalcore is best, indie is a tie between canada and america.

During the British Invasion heyday, definitely the UK. The Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, etc.

That was a long time ago, though. I'll go with the US today. But all of the above are among my favorite bands ever.
