the first resident evil... way back in the day. when it was first released. after that those type games weren't even scary anymore. but still my fav genre of games.
Doom 3 was pretty scary, but I'd have to say that one of the Silent Hill games takes the cake (I never played SH4). not sure which one is best, but they all had several moments of sheer brilliance.

This one time, I was walking along with my gun and nothing was happening. I was getting bored, and I saw a ventilation duct near the ground. So i was like, "I wonder what the insides of these ducts looks like."
So I walked up to it, crouched down and looked inside, and saw an imp 5 feet away from me crawling towards me to bite my head off.
That scared the ****ing **** out of me. The game had plenty of creepy moments, but I'll never forget that ****. I literally peed my pants when that happened.
I played the demo for AvP2, and it was pretty cool.
But I bought AvP 1 and it pissed me off.
You know what pissed me off most? The aliens are supposed to by big, right? 7, maybe 8 feet tall, right? So why the **** is it that every time I get attacked by an Alien in AvP, that I have to basically aim at my ****ing feet just to kill the ****er?
Every time an alien attacked me, I basically had to look straight DOWN just to SEE the ****er. Then I'd have to keep circling just to hit the ****er.
I mean, really, what the **** is up with that ****? I've seen all of the Alien movies, all of the Predator movies, and AvP, and can't recall once having seen a character having to aim at their own feet just to kill a fully grown adult Alien.
**** AvP, **** comics, **** Paul Anderson, and **** whoever the **** made the piece of **** game that was AvP.

Cuz in AVP1 there were only one kinds of aliens and those were the ones that only crawled, well only crawled in the game. In AVP2 there are many different kinds.
Alone in the dark was one of those good "scary" games too back then. What with the game being in 3d, and me not used to a keyboard to play action games, it scared the heck out of me.
What was the name of that game where if you got caught you were locked in the basement of that house and you had to rescue yourself with one of the friends you came in with?
I haven't played any really scary games but the only time I can remember being scared by one was when I was playing the beneath the well and the Shadow Temple in the Ocarina of Time. Those redeads and wall masters still creep me out.

Maniac Mansion by Lucas Arts. That game gave me nightmares.
though it isn't a scary game, Splinter Cell you are creeping down a dark alley, then suddenly your head explodes, because out of nowhere a guy is shooting at you :)
I haven't played any "scary" games - horror games, but Battlefield 2 can be scary...really, not in the sense where you get spooked for a few seconds, but... when your in a 1 on 1 with an enemy in an open area where there is no help, and with that said you are usually a lone wolf sniper out on the hills when you bump into an enemy...you both take out your silenced pistols and start blasting away, as soon as you waste a clip, you get your knife, and start slashing like some blind pirate...seriously, you get so much adrenaline pumping when that happens in ranked games that you will litterally, push back, your hands are a bit shaky...any bf2 players know what I'm talking about?

I don't play BF2 but I know exactly what you mean. Games like that can often create a good sense of tension and satisfaction, which is what I like. :)
I haven't played very many horror games, but Doom 3 spooked me a couple of times when things jump out at ya or whatever.
