Gov. Dennis Daugaard of South Dakota on Friday signed into law abill that would allow teachers to carry guns in the classroom.

While some other states have provisions in their gun laws that make it possible for teachers to be armed, South Dakota is believed to be the first state to pass a law that specifically allows teachers to carry firearms.

About two dozen states have proposed similar bills since the shootings in December at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., but all of them have stalled.

Supporters say that the measure signed by Mr. Daugaard, a Republican, is important in a rural state like South Dakota, where some schools are many miles away from emergency responders.

Opponents, which have included the state school board association and teachers association, say this is a rushed measure that does not make schools safer.

The law says that school districts may choose to allow a school employee, hired security officer or volunteer to serve as a sentinel who can carry a firearm in the school. The law does not require school districts to do this.

Mr. Daugaard said he was comfortable with the law because it gave school districts the right to choose whether they wanted armed individuals in schools, and that those who were armed must would have to undergo firearms training similar to what law enforcement officers received.

I think it does provide the same safety precautions that a citizen expects when a law enforcement officer enters onto a premises, Mr. Daugaard said in an interview. But he added that he did not think that many school districts would end up taking advantage of the measure.

Agreed. Being a teacher doesn't mean you're any better than the average citizen, and it certainly doesn't mean you should be trusted more than the average citizen to carry a gun. Teachers do sh**** things all the time, just like the average citizen.

lol, what the f*ck... I can't possibly see how this will make schools safer.

Hopefully anyone who does take advantage of this will have enough sense to keep them under serious lock and key (or at least be forced to).

This, I dont trust anyone who isn't professionally trained to carry a gun and I wouldn't want ANYONE carrying a gun around my kids.

And you are blaming the teachers for that? They have one of the most difficult jobs any citizen can do, yet they are paid pretty crappy. Perhaps they'd be a lot more moviated to work if they had a bit more to eat. I guarantee you that student performance rating will go slightly up.

The quote makes it sound like they can only appoint one person to carry a gun, which doesn't seem very helpful

I think it's funny how the opponents of this law are school officials and teachers. Even they know something like this is pointless and won't do anything.

This country never ceases to provide the lol-worthy moments. It would be much funnier to me if I didn't actually live here. Like the recent gun accident during a gun safety demonstration in Texas. The state where it's more important to teach the younguns how to use a gun than to teach them safe sex.

My concern is that the teacher would not be properly trained in using a gun in a stressful situation and does more harm than good when trying to help.

Bad idea. A teacher who wants to own a gun should be able to, but they should not be able to bring it into their classroom. It's not appropriate and it's not fair to parents who don't want guns around their children.

It's South Dakota.  There's only like 2 schools and 3 teachers in the whole state.  And the guns are probably to fend off bears.

I guess I'm the lone dissenter ,but I agree with this and think its a good thing. This simply provides teachers the freedom to carry a firearm with them if they choose to. The vast majority will not and I think people here are imagining every single teacher they've ever had carrying a weapon. That simply isn't what is going to happen, only a few motivated individuals will actually do it.

Armed school officials in the past have stopped school shootings

I'm really just not ok with this. Having armed security or police officers is one thing, but teachers having guns in their desks just sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Unless a teacher is highly trained and packing some serious heat, I find that incredibly unlikely and could just cause way more problems. This is really no different to me than people being allowed to carry guns in hospitals or government buildings.

I quoted an instance where an armed school official stopped a school shooting. You decided to ignore it.

No I didn't. I clearly said unless they're "highly trained" it could cause way more problems. The defender in your link was a US Army Commander ffs. I think it's more than fair to assume most teachers don't have that type of training, don't you?

He was acting as a civilian while using a non service issue pistol. You're making the assumption that an Army Reserve commander had special training that helped him handle the situation with no evidence to back it up . It doesn't appear from what I've read that he fired a shot during the confrontation. Even then you're drastically overestimating the training required to be proficient enough with a firearm to defend yourself.

lawl, please. Because one extraordinary event occured isn't justification to allow guns in classrooms.

Also, I'm not overestimating training required to defend yourself, I'm taking into account the fact that there are tons of children there and possibility for them to get hit in the crossfire or for a freak accident to occur or god forbid a teacher to go crazy and shoot up her classroom.

I would like to see more context. I'm not opposed to it if there are some qualifications behind it. A teacher can posses a firearm but must meet this criteria (training etc) and attend a follow up course every 6 months or year to keep the privilege.

I don't see this really helping anything at all, and really this only potentially adds more dangers to schools.

Students will still be able to shoot up schools with this law and could still very easily manage to take down a good amount of innocent students/teachers before maybe getting show by a teacher (or before shooting him/herself).

All this law is doing is making it easier for a teacher to shoot a student, accidentally or not, and just increasing the odds of somebody getting shot. It's a very small chance, sure, but the same could be said about students shooting up a school.

Well to be fair, in the event that a teacher goes of into the deep end and decides to massacre the school, the issue of whether its legal to carry on gun or not would not matter.

Seriously, they better keep that locked all the time.  Teachers at my school are always forgetting to lock their desks and have had cameras, phones and other sh*t stolen.  It's not inconceivable that a student would get hold of the gun.  Also, have these people seen some teachers?  Being a teacher doesn't make you any more qualified or smart than the average person.
