Apparently Walmart's CEO was forced into an early retirement after the company illegally threatened four hundred workers for striking.

Its a entry level job they all suck. This summer i worked ever holiday, along with 10+ hr days, in 90+ degrees. 60 hour work weeks, with no OT. You stick your head down and get threw it. Its a job nothing more. Thats the problem with America so many people think they deserve whatever they want. You are at the bottom, you don't get all the perks. You earn the perks

Yes they can. They can fire you if you're confined to a hospital bed due to being in a car wreck on the way to work.

That sucks

Technically, they can't. It would be wrongful termination. However, it is extremely easy to get around that by just claiming you fired them for another reason.

It's a crappy minimum wage job at a failing brick and mortar electronics store that probably won't even be in business in a year or two. Just quit. Black Friday is a trainwreck that's not worth getting involved in, and certainly not for minimum wage. And making you work on Thanksgiving is a bunch of douchebag nonsense.

If he's gonna take that attitude, then he'd better not shop on black friday and he'd better not do ANYTHING on Thanksgiving that requires someone to be at work instead of at home.

"It's not worth working on Black Friday" stems from working black friday being unpleasant due to the number of shoppers on that day. Which means that if you're gonna quit a job because "no one should be working that day", then you'd f***ing better not be going out shopping on that day. That'd make you the worst kind of hypocrite. You complain about something being fundamentally wrong in order to get out of doing it yourself. Then as soon as YOU don't do it, you turn around and support OTHER people doing it. Well, "it's just plain wrong" and "I support it as long as it's not me that has to do the work" don't fit together very well.

I have a real job. I don't work on Thanksgiving or Black Friday. I also don't shop on Black Friday. Black Friday is for luddites who haven't discovered the internet. You can get similar prices on NewEgg or Amazon any day of the year.

I am pretty sure I have another job lined up, it's about a 90% chance I get it. Working bestbuy. part time. They want me to come in on thanksgiving at 4:30, work till like 1:30 am, go home for 7 hours, come back and work another like 9 hours on black friday. I think I am just going to quit. I do feel kind of bad for doing it right before black friday, but on the other hand I am so disgusted they are making us work thanksgiving AND GIVING NO BONUS or double time it makes me not feel bad for quitting. What do you guys think?

Do they not have to pay you penalty rates?

Uhhh, I already got a better job. I quit BB. I think Americans deserve what citizens in other countries get. The profits are spread out more, not so top heavy. In Norway CEO's have caps and they perform as good or better. Minimum wage is higher in many other countries. So is upward mobility and median income. This is the land of the suckers. People are finally waking up and voting in progressives.

I use to work at walmart and this is what retail is all about, especially around the holidays. People would love to get those hours for the holidays.

In some cases letting the person go is certainly justifiable. After a certain point it simply becomes unreasonable (logically and legally) to hold a job for someone who is unable to work that job.

You have to see it from the employer's side too. They hired that person because they needed someone to do a job. The need to have that work done doesn't go away because an employee is unable to work. Does it make sense for one man to lose his business because he's not allowed to hire someone to do a job that another employee is unable to do?

I once lost a job in a similar way (I lost a job managing a law office because I had to take a ridiculous amount of military leave over the course of about 2 years), and I know that it sucks to lose a job due to something beyond your control. I also know from experience, though, that it sucks for a business to waste/lose money because an employee is unable to work due to something beyond his control.

Yeah that makes sense. I'm not going to pretend I know what the law is regarding to this situation, that's just what I've been told. I figure that if it's a random case it may be unlawful to fire you, but if you have a history of not showing up, it would be OK. Again, I have no idea if that's right or not, just what makes logical sense to me.

Thats why minimum wage is so high. The profits are spread out more because norway is a socialist country. You're still fucking over all of the other employees that are supposed to work with you by quitting without notice. This isn't just about him. Especially on black Friday; it's just a dick move.

Any day of the year, including Thanksgiving.

Meaning that there are people working on Thanksgiving to make sure that people like you don't spend the holidays in the dark. If you use the internet on Thanksgiving, that's due to someone else working. If you watch television or use your oven to make dinner on Thanksgiving, that's due to someone else working on Thanksgiving.

the problem with retail jobs though is that when you move up things get worse.

You seem to misunderstand what I meant. I'm not talking about his boss and the company. **** them. I'm talking about the other average workers just like him who will now have to work short an employee or they will have to call in someone who had the day off. He's fucking over the other regular employees.

@Toxic-Seahorse: I can't blame him for wanting to quit. That is a pretty big joke to say you have to start at 4:30pm on a Holiday. If the store is closed on the holiday there's no reason why they can't do what needs to be done on the Wed night. Work till 1 or 2 am and give your employees the day off that they deserve.

And **** the other employee's, none of them would bend over backwards for him so why should they deserve his loyalty?

It all comes down to whether TC wants money or not. He can do whatever he wants, it just may not work out in his favor.

Actually Mikey the guy I was suppose to be working with in Digital Imaging was a prick. When I first started when I would ask him how to do something he would give me a smart ass comment. The first day on the floor I was told to shadow him, I walked up to him and he asked me what I wanted before I could even let him know. If he would have been a decent person I may not have quit it did play a part in my decision. Years ago I worked at CIrcuit City for about 4 years. All those guys were like good friends. I never would have skipped out on a BF and let them down. These guy's were just smart ass spoiled pricks. Another thing was leading up to Thanksgiving I got no hours, except closing late the night before Thanksgiving. Then working Thanksgiving, and Black Friday. It really was a $hitty place to work.

Funny how "doing one's own job" is referred to as "bending over backwards."

Got a job offer today. Quitting with no notice. Don't need the reference. I think what they are doing is disgusting and I hope more people do the same. This is total BS. Telling us at the last minute we have to work Thanksgiving, no holiday pay for Thanksgiving or Black Friday. If I got holiday pay I wouldn't have even looked for something else.

Are you shitting me? Holiday pay? It's an entry level job! No entry level job gets holiday pay. If that is "disgusting" to you, well, you're in for a rude awakening.

OHH, Entry level job = you are a slave? F'that. Yes many entry level jobs get holiday pay. Try like every entry level call center job. Only in Amurica do the workers have no rights compared to places in Europe, Japan, Australia and Canada. If you enjoy getting bent over by corporate amurica have at it bro. Not me. If they treat me that bad, just more reason to quit. I'm not sure what part of I got a better job offer you didn't get.

Yeah, I agree on this one. I've never worked a job, at ANY level, that didn't give Holiday Pay if you actually work on Thanksgiving day. In fact, I'm pretty sure the law requires that they do. It's a Nationally recognized holiday.

So yeah, if you've got that other job offer on lockdown, then **** best buy. Quit with no notice, and don't even bother putting it on your resume. Future employers can't call them to get a bad reference if future employers don't even know that you ever worked there. I've worked half a dozen places, if not more, that aren't mentioned on my resume, because they were terrible employers, terrible jobs, and I quit in terrible ways.

That is completely wrong. The only holidays I don't work are Thanksgiving and Christmas (business is closed). Everything else I have to work and for my normal wage. As a matter of fact, I don't know a single person who gets holiday pay for working on a holiday.

Do it. I worked at Best Buy and absolutely hated it, you get no sort of benefit whatsoever, all my managers/supervisors were complete dicks, and they never give raises. **** that place. Went through two years of their scum.

"you get no sort of benefit whatsoever"

Of course you do. Did you not get a paycheck?

I don't consider a paycheck to be a benefit. The paycheck is what you're working for, what they legally have to give you for working. A benefit is something like a discount at the store or cheaper health insurance.

You agreed to it and its your good word on the line. If it bothers you so much cross retail off the things you will do in the future but do the job you've got now and do it right.

You get an 11 hour rest every Monday to Friday? What does that even mean? Did you read what I wrote or just press your face against it?

That exact same thing happened to me when I worked at Fry's a few years ago and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. I worked as a salesman in the appliances section and since everything was on sale I got almost no commission on what I sold and I had to bring down like 10 refrigerators and take them to the front that day. It was horrible and the customers were giant assholes.

My seasonal job required an 11 hour rest between shifts, so the people telling you to suck it up must think that getting shafted up the backside is ok.

11 hours? Oh you poor baby. That's every week for me Monday through Friday. Grow up.

You get an 11 hour rest every Monday to Friday? What does that even mean? Did you read what I wrote or just press your face against it?

I get to work at 6 AM and generally leave around 7 PM. 11 hours. Every week.

Funny how "doing one's own job" is referred to as "bending over backwards."

It's a damn shame that more and more people with that attitude are coming into the work force.

What I meant by bending over backward is to continue to do a job you don't want to to suit other people...

And Greg, I've been a heavy equipment operator for 13 years. My work ethic is sound, it has to be ;) If TC was me, I wouldn't quit, I'd deal with it. I still can't blame him for feeling the way he does though.

Like others have stated, don't do it since you'll hurt your fellow coworkers. I work at a grocery store so obviously I don't have to deal with that crap on Black Friday but I've had days (Thanksgiving preparations, large groups coming in randomly, Christmas preparation, high school graduations, etc, etc) where people did call out sick on incredibly busy days that made it harder for all the coworkers. Perhaps they were legit, perhaps not, but if you're quitting because of that, be prepared for repercussions such as leaving the workplace on a bad note and being called "unreliable." There are numerous jobs that suck more than what you have, and no one wants to work on very busy days but someone has to do it.

Be smart about this: Work on Black Friday and then announce that you wish to quit. Leave on a good note.

You seem to be of the opinion that I was complaining about an 11 hour rest. I was not. I was stating that it was required, that is, you MUST rest for 11 hours or longer and therefore the TC's employers are, in my opinion, bending him over a table.

If you're not a seasonal worker, I don't see what's so hard about bookmarking that day for a dayoff a month or two in advance....

I quit that MF. You only live once man. I'm not putting myself through all that for the dog $hit pay. I have another job now. Haven't started yet but I accepted the offer. I was only a seasonal worker. All that BS for two months worth of paychecks. No way. I worked up until Thanksgiving. I would have worked it for the coworkers if half of them were not so damn rude.

Look at all the peasants argue.

Hmm, back to deciding which island I'd like to buy next.
