Need help with a story I am writing.

I have the whole story figured out, the only thing I have to figure out is the name of something. I will not post the full story details, but basically it is a story about growing up mixed with a dystopian future as a background. The dystopian future part is a city where everything is artificial even nature stuff like trees and everyone is constantly hooked into a kind of virtual reality game system thing. The main character is a boy who lives outside the walls of the city with his dad. Outside the city most of the real nature is destroyed and the dad spends his life with his son trying to bring it back. Kinda the virtual world thing in the film Existenz mixed with the film Silent running. The virtual reality thing doesnt factor in tons in terms of story, but it is still important plot wise. What I need to think of is a name for the virtual reality game thing, it sounds silly but a bad name could really mess up the story somehow. I would love the help, I will be sending the story in to be published too since it is a short story:D

something like "Living," something that has to do with life, it'll be ironic cause it's not even really like living, at least that's the feel i'm getting from it

Yeah thats a good idea. its tough thinking of good names for anything in stories, I named the city Petra after the famous city carved into rock somewhere. Characters are even tougher though, it has to sound just right. I get my character names from baby naming websites actually:P

I want to call it the "Matrix", but I'm sure that's not what you want to hear. I kind of like the first suggestion.

Maybe something to do with mirrors or reflections - virtual but about as real as a reflection

yeah I was thinking something like that too. The virtual reality thing is everywhere in the city, school use it to teach kids, and kids use it at home to relax. The government says it is used to inspire creativty. Cramming all this into a short story is going to be frustrating:(

it would definately have to sound like something a company would come up with if they are trying to sell a product. however, im not quite sure of the themes your going for with the game. is it a substitute for living like needled suggested? any specific aspect of life? social? LoG-Sacrament

It is supposed to inspire creativity according the government but it really isolates people from social interaction and life. They are hooked to it because they can create anything in the game so they stay hooked to it for hours on end. So yeah a substitute for living is a good description of it.

Maybe have a slogan and use the first letters (can't remember what that is called - not an anagram but something like it)

What about use IRL - instead of "In Real Life" - "In Reflected Living" or something like that.

Just because I am nice guy I will elaborate on the story a bit. The main character is a 13 year old boy who lives with his dad outside the city. He spends most of his time wandering the desolate landscape with his dad looking for ways to bring nature back. There are clues in the story that the dad is a bit of a nut and is losing his mind a bit, he starts ranting about a government conspiracy to control people via the virtual reality game. Also in the city the sky in artificial too, but people dont really notice that because outside the city the sky is pretty much constantly grey and depressing so the government didnt like that much. Anyway the boy meets a girl of course and starts a friendship with her and tells her his dad's crazy conspiracy theory. She believes it more than him and one day decides to carry out one of the plans the boy's dad had to bring down the virtual reality game. She brings a gun to school, holds people hostage etc. and ends up being shot and killed, the boy's dad turns out to be a bit crazy and the boy is not allowed back out the city and has to move to a new house inside while his dad is taken away. So yeah nice uplifting story:) is 13 too young though considering the school shooting thing?

It has an odd appeal to it, though I prefer something short and sweet. Like...poop.

sanctimonia ludicrum. essenitally that is latin for virtual game. That is a little trick from Tolkien. He used latin names mixed with english words an example would be lob is latin for spider so he just put she in front of lob and presto Shelob.

I suggest ou look up a latin translator online and go from there.

Yeah but this is all setting and background development, its more about the characters and the school shooting at the end. I will probably develop it into something larger later but I should be able to scale it down a bit for a short story. I hope at least:(

Thats a cool idea. Im the same with writing, ive had this idea for ages but I only just started writing it last week. I tend to procrastinate, a lot:P and no, not lazer guns. Im worried people might not like to read as story with a school shooting where a young girl gets shot. Maybe 13 is too young?

Actually that could work, if I call it Archetype then I write all the non main characters as total generic atchetypes as an ironic joke.

Cheers kind sir:P I like writing ideas out as short stories first so I can later develop then more into a full novel, novella, or script. Im actually filming a swine flu comedy sketch too pretty soon:D
