Looking at this years album releases/single releases i'd say rock music is dead in the water. Bunch of has-beens releasing albums and Hipster tween rock that doesn't count. What gives?! Anybody recommend me any music? I'm out of songs and i'm sick of listening to old stuff.

I haven't heard of "hipster tween" rock... Not trying to be rude or argue or anything of that nature, just not sure what that is lol. I've heard "tween" as in Bieber and Selena Gomez and all that crap, but that sounds diff.

Far from it. Tons of sub-genres are still well alive : psychedelic rock, stoner rock, desert rock,etc...

Stolen Babies, there proven wrong (also Pellek and Charlie Parra are pretty dandy...). The promotion of good music seems to have died off, and MTV (far as I know) doesn't cover music much anymore, but the music's still there. Also, don't forget Sturgeon's law.

Nope, try looking outside of radio rock and the charts and you'll find plenty of great small bands still making great rock music. Arcane RootsFuture of the LeftPulled Apart By HorsesTurbowolfLaFaroIndian Handcrafts

I hardly listen to rock these days.

I'm more into rap like I was in the 90s, but even today's hiphop/rap can't top some of mainstream hiphop/rap in the 90s. We got idiots like 2 chainz and Lil Wayne. Why is any of that crap even selling?

A lot of the shit I hear is dupstep and other wubz-like genres. There's good rock music out there but just not as popular.

That depends on how you define "rock". There do not seem to be that many bands lately that feature the classic 4-piece rock setup of guitar, bass, drums, and vox. Most bands I hear nowadays seem to incorporate some sort of electronic element to them. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. However, I am not sure if we will see a resurgence of traditional rock music that matches what happened in the 90s with actual talented rock musicians in bands such as Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. Part of me thinks that what can be done with just a guitar and drums has already been done already, but what do I know?

The problem with rock is that pretty much anything can be called "rock" by anyone's standards, I don't consider heavy metal to be rock, but some people do. There's such a plethora of music that is called "rock" that no one can really say if it counts or not.

Rock music IS dead.  Anyone that studies contemporary music could point that out.

As quoted by Win Butler, " Well Rock is dead,  I mean can you think of anything that is more dead than rock music now?  Oh, besides Jazz."

What is the difference between mainstream rock and alternative rock? It's an honest question because I have no f*cking idea, broad genre names like that confuse me. I feel like people just call something "alternative" if they don't know what else to classify it as. The same thing is starting to happen with "indie rock" too

On the subject, it's not just rock though. Generic radio pop has permeated into every major genre to the point where everything is starting to sound the same. Rock, country, hip-hop, etc. has all been so pop-ified now to the point where everything that will be played on most stations (and thus be widely popular) has blurred into the same sound. It's sad. Go listen to your local country station now...half the songs sound like they could be a Britney Spears song. I was listening to the local hard rock station yesterday and some of the stuff that gets passed as "hard rock" now sounds like a Jonus Bros song.:|

The new QotSA album is awesome but I am not so sure if that is the best example.  It fell of the charts rather quickly and relative to the bigger picture-Its pretty minuscule.

Rock isn't dead. It just has lacked any sort of coherant movement since like 2006, and it is showing. Who can you point out that leads rock? Muse? Imagine Dragons? lol, don't make me hurl. In the early and mid-90's it was the grunge bands that led the genre. Then they kinda fell apart and post-grunge bands like Bush, Creed, and Nickelback took over. Not mention the rise of nu-metal began, and Korn helped breath something new into the music. In the early 2000's we saw a lot of elements being adopted from rap and hip-hop. That went on for a few years, and began to peter out alongside the remaining post-grunge bands. Nothing big came after that. There have been spurts of more electronic bands for sure, but they haven't had quite the same impact as the predecessors. And their is no real leader.

As for great to okay music still being released, there is still plenty:

Soundgarden's latest album

Benedictum

Alice In Chains latest album

Avenged Sevenfold

Chevelle

Foo Fighters

Our Lady Peace (2012 album was terrible though)

Smashing Pumpkins released a decent album

Within Temptation

Yeah, my tastes are what many would call a little dated.

No way.

Born of Osiris and City in the Sea have new albums coming out tomorrow. Then we got Stray from the Path release one next month.

And that's just the sub genre I'm keeping an eye on. Doesn't even account for all the other sub genres of rock out there.

Maybe if you're listening to the radio or know nothing about rock music.
