Here's my problem with smoking.

Smoking costs money, not smoking is free.

Smoking is bad for you, not smoking isn't.

Smoking is paying for something that kills you, not smoking doesn't.

Smoking eventually turns into an addiction, not smoking doesn't, and even if it did, all the better.

Smoking and "lighting up" to relieve a quick stress burden becomes an almost necessity for a person who smokes, people who do not smoke do not have this sensation and are able to find other ways to cope.

Smoking blackens up lungs and sometimes creates the necessesity to require a lung transplant putting a burden on themselves, the hospitals, the donors, society in general, and just frankly someone else who could have used the lung who didn't have a smoking addiction and needed it for a reason that wasn't easily prevantable.

All of this could have been avoided if the person just hadn't picked up the cigarette to begin with.

What do you think?

It's easy to logically tell someone why they shouldn't continue addictive actions, but for that person, the logic is beside the whole point.

Not picking up the cigarette is easy as well, just don't do it.

Just don't buy cigarettes at the gas station.

Just don't light one up.

Just don't do it.

Problem solved.

Yeah, that too.

Some of them feel some God-given right to contaminate the air with cyanide. Why they think this is beyond me.

Not so many now, but in high school and college, lots. The people that buy cigarettes on the weekend for when they party.

While I agree those are my personal reasons for not smoking, I don't have a problem with other people smoking as long as they aren't blowing smoke in my face. I think it's a bit unfortunate if someone needs to smoke to mellow out, but if that's what they want to do then so be it. I drink to loosen up on weekends and that's bad as well, but my choice.

You basically just restated everything everyone knows about smoking. The problem is, you don't know what made a person start. People from all walks of life, all family situations smoke, and they all have their reasons.

Except for the stress part (Which I don't even see as a positive), everything is negative. Exactly why I will never smoke.

You insinuated that what I said was "obvious."

If it's so "obvious" then why do people do it.

If the concept is that simple to understand, people should not have a problem understanding it.

This is what baffles me.

True.

The nicotene inside a cigarette triggers the brain to crave it.

People who smoke should just muscle up and become stronger than that impulse.

Yeah, while I'm not a fan of cigarettes, I have dabbled in cigars and cigarellos once in a while and found them quite pleasing on the sense. I wouldn't make a habit of them but I could see why people might feel the same for cigarettes.

Plus I beleive people underestimate addictions, it's not always as simple as having enough will power.

The exact same argument can be made for obesity, and its becoming far more popular.

See also: Super Size Me.

You don't rag on people for being fat in general, but now its okay and acceptable to shun smokers.

We get it, you don't like smoking. Just realize there are hundreds of vices just like it that harm others far worse. (Prostitution, obesity, alcoholism, hard drugs, etc.)

I think that I don't get what some non-smokers' obsessive compulsion is to tell smokers how bad smoking is for them. Do you really think people can't see all that for themselves, or do you just like making self-righteous speeches that boost your own self-esteem? Why concern yourself with things that don't affect you?

No, you don't. You're just inserting yourself into a situation in which you will make almost no difference except to piss people off just to inflate your own ego and create a personal sense of self-importance. Just take a deep breath, tell yourself that you don't need to nitpick at other people's habits, and find something more constructive to do in which you can find a more tangible sense of accomplishment.
