Gun attack on French magazine Charlie Hebdo kills 11

Gunmen have attacked the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing 11 people and injuring 10, French officials say.

Witnesses spoke of sustained gunfire at the office as the attackers opened fire with assault rifles before escaping.

Police have launched a major operation in the Paris area in their hunt for the attackers.

Charlie's latest tweet was a cartoon of the Islamic State militant group leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The satirical weekly has courted controversy in the past with its irreverent take on news and current affairs.

The magazine was fire-bombed in November 2011 a day after it carried a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.

President Francois Hollande is at the scene and is planning to hold an emergency cabinet meeting.

'Black-hooded men'

Two of those killed are police officers, France's AFP news agency reports, and five of those wounded are critically injured.

An eyewitness, Benoit Bringer, told French TV channel Itele: "Two black-hooded men entered the building with Kalashnikovs.

"A few minutes later we heard lots of shots."

The men were then seen fleeing the building.

"It's carnage," French police official Luc Poignant told another French channel, BFMTV.

Police have warned French media to be on alert and pay attention to security following the attack.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Terrible tragedy.

If only they had gun control in France.

Oh and then there is the potential ISIS angle to this story. This should be a compelling discussion.

The religion of peace strikes again, Islam is in severe need of a reform -- westerners criticize and even mock each others values, this does not in turn warrant violence.

It is so sad, you can feel the frothing at the mouth from the 2 CNN anchors, specially Cuomo. I guess the new plane thing has run its course already.

There is one, I bet the authorities aren't saying it to help keep tempers down and not provoke retaliatory attacks (they knew about several other cells planning attacks just like this one). There is no reason to suspect otherwise at this point. They killed all the people in the office and the police guarding them. No one else was threatened or injured.

I'm glad the people of France are standing up against the affront to their freedom of speech, instead of backing down and playing the "we mean no offense" bullshit.

Also, this. They can't put up with this garbage anymore. They need to crack down heavily on extremism (of any kind, not just Islamic) and showcase that the rights of it's citizens are not to be infringed upon.

Witnesses said they heard the gunmen shouting "We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad" and "God is Great" in Arabic ("Allahu Akbar").

Probably. Supposedly the French government has thwarted multiple terrorist in the last few weeks which sound pretty serious and revealing yet no one has been focusing on it (at least on TV) and they just talk about it in passing remarks.

Until a group takes responsibility, it really could be anyone. Hell, it could be Catholic extremists posing as Islamic extremists (the magazine has been known to post a lot of anti-Catholic imagery as well).

And I don't even want to bring up the whole concept of the reliability (or lack thereof) of witness testimony.

I'm just saying, we should remain cautious about attributing responsibility absolutelyon a group before we know for sure.

Here is a cartoon that the Charlie Hebdo magazine Twitted moments before the attack.

This isn't to say that this specific cartoon caused today's attack since that would make them fortune tellers being able to get there moments after the Twit.

What utter nonsense.

This attack is because the satirical paper had printed the muhammed cartoons and something about the leader of ISIS.

And no we can thank religion who create sick people like this and these cowards didn't even have the balls to stay and face the press, they ran like little kids.

People who equate human lives to drawings of imaginary religious figures are indeed mentally ill. People who are far less dangerous to society were lobotomised in the past, so why not these?

It shows 2 armed men murder a Police. From the car they drove, it looks like they come from a wealthy family. I'm an Atheist, but I'm going to pray for the people of Europe

Making fun of mohammad via cartoons is also not nice ... imo, but killing people just for cartoons is tottaly not acceptable. These western guys should stop making fun of islam also since they know it insults ones religion and they retaliate. Why provoke ? Just my 2 cents :)

The only reason those images "lead to destruction" are because a lot of Muslims are entitled, violent people who think they can be free of criticism and offense. The freedom of speech protects every human beings right to say WHATEVER they want and not be punished for it so long as it does not incite violence (usually in the sense of "go out and burn down the town" or "kill all black people", not in the sense that people retaliate for finding it offensive).

These Muslim extremists are to blame. The freedom of the media to express itself satirically is something that was fought for and many millions of people died for. Muslims need to learn to take a joke, like every other Western religion has.

And these people did not die because they posted satirical imagery. They died because these extremists are hateful, murderous bastards who think the only way to "win" is by killing those who disagree with them. That is not what modern, civilized people do.

DO NOT defend the extremists by thinking it's the artists/magazines fault for publishing the images.

because he was an evil person? That seems like a good reason to make fun of him.

But like I said before nobody is free from criticism. Just because some people like him that doesn't mean you can't insult him. Some people like Hitler does that mean we can't insult Hitler?

The moment we have to censor what we joke about is the moment the terrorists win. The moment our free society becomes less free. The magazine knew what it was doing, and everyone that worked there knew what it was doing. They all agree to a higher ideal that they will not be terrorized into censorship. This is a tragic situation, but we cannot let this change the way we operate as a society. The number one rule of dealing with terrorists is to not give into their demands, for once you do that, they control you.

Making fun of mohammad via cartoons is also not nice ... imo, but killing people just for cartoons is tottaly not acceptable. These western guys should stop making fun of islam since they know it insults ones religion. Just my 2 cents :)

What's wrong with making fun of Muhammad? Nobody is free from criticism or ridicule.

Islam is not part of western culture. Why make fun of a person worshipped by muslims?Muslims not making caricatures of Jesus ya ? These cartoonists should understand posting such images will lead to only destruction, no good outcome will come from it.

I saying in best interest of all , as see 12 innocent people got killed in France just for dumbass pictures. Why bring death upon fellow citizens too ?

I hate terrorrists with a passion, and i want who killed those12 innocent french people should be punished asap.

All i'm saying is why make fun of ones religion when you know the extremists don't take to it easily? They retaliate. Why provoke ? Why endanger life of own kin also in the process.

If you hate terrorists why do you want to give them what they want?

The moment we have to censor what we joke about is the moment the terrorists win. The moment our free society becomes less free. The magazine knew what it was doing, and everyone that worked there knew what it was doing. They all agree to a higher ideal that they will not be terrorized into censorship. This is a tragic situation, but we cannot let this change the way we operate as a society. I fully understand. But its not helping atm. The extremists are going to any lenghts on such provocations. You tell me what should be the ideal solution to this ? :)

So you think terrorisme should work? because that is what you are saying.

If we give up on fundamental liberties, like freedom of press and speech is. what is to stop the terrorists from demanding more? its like with blackmail, if you give in once you can be sure they will be back asking for more.

Hopefully this attack will make most of the media publish those cartoons and drawings again and make sure that the terrorists know that we in the west will rather die standing then on our knees begging.
