As always, any help you can offer regarding new ranks and emblems and the requirements for each is appreciated

LATEST UPDATE: New emblems added - Registered Member, Plus Subscriber, Total Access, Love Song writer, Voted Twice, PSP Aficionado, DS Aficionado.

So far, it seems that posting and spending time on the forums increases your rank, but it is far from the only factor. There are members who never post, yet have high ranks, demonstrating that ranking is based not only on posting, but also on time spent using the many other features that gamespot offers. So far, it seems likely that using the "collection," "tracking," and "wish list" features contributes to your ranking. Taking advantage of gamespot's news, review, previews, downloads, and other features does as well, although it is hard to quantify the impact of each of those things. As I get new information, though, I'll do my best to add it

Level 1 - Player - Self-explanatory.

Level 2 - Journeyman - Possibly a reference to the Journeyman Project series for the PC/Mac.

Level 3 - Mediator - Reference to a 1986 spaceship game for the C64 and the NES.

Level 4 - Paper Boy - Name of the classic arcade game where you are - yes! - a Paper Boy, delivering the latest news while dodging people and obstacles.

Level 5 - Tapper - A reference to the arcade game by the same name, in which the player had to serve beer quickly to increasingly surly patrons.

Level 6 - The Super Spy - One of the first attempts at a first-person-perspective action game, for the Neo Geo, in which you played as a secret agent charged with infiltrating an enemy base.

Level 7 - Sectoid - A baddie from the X-Com games.

Level 8 - Quad Damage - A power-up in Quake that drastically increased the amount of damage your weapons did.

Level 9 - Ikari Warrior - A classic SNK coin-op where you battle your way through guerilla territory, taking on marksmen, combateers and tanks!

Level 10 - Phoenix Down - An item from the Final Fantasy games, used to bring defeated players back to life.

Level 11 - Atomic Punk - An arcade game in which you planted bombs around a maze. I believe this was another name for the Bomberman series.

Level 12 - Rad Racer - Racing game for the NES. Featured a 3-D mode using special glasses.

Level 13 - Toobin' - An arcade and NES (and later Game Boy Color) game focusing on the fascinating world of inner-tube racing.

Level 14 - Ring King - A classic boxing game for the NES.

Level 15 - Nobunaga's Ambition - A classic KOEI historical simulation RPG for the NES set in 16th-century feudal Japan, which has been updated recently in online form for the PS2.

Level 16 - Magician Lord - A classic SNK action-adventure game placing you in the role of a magician lord seeking out eight books of wisdom while fighting off enemies with numerous types of magic.

Level 17 - Minus World - A hidden level from Super Mario Bros. for the NES.

Level 18 - Flicky - A little-known platformer for the Genesis, featuring Flicky, a character first introduced in the Sonic series.

Level 19 - Gitaroo Man - Highly-acclaimed rhythm game for the PS2 which tells the story of U-1 and his jelly-bean-headed talking dog Puma and their quest to save the universe.

Level 20 - Metal Slime - One of the cutest monsters from Dragon Warrior. A royal pain in the butt to beat before they ran away. But oh, the XP if you managed it!

Level 21 - Rescue Ranger - Possibly a reference to the Chip 'n' Dale's Rescue Rangers game on the NES.

Level 22 - Blaster Master - One of the greatest (and hardest) NES games of all time. Game play switched between walking and driving, which was pretty darn cool at the time.

Level 23 - Super Bagman - An arcade game developed by Stern in 1984, in which you played as an escaped convict collecting bags of money from a mine.

Level 24 - I Feel Asleep!! - A well-known line from Metal Gear for the NES. Unclear whether it was a typo (I fell asleep!!) or a mistranslation (I feel sleepy!!).

Level 25 - Defias Brotherhood - This is a chain of quests from Gamespot's favourite title of last year, World of Warcraft - can you do them all to get to the final showdown with Edwin van Cleef?

Level 26 - Cyber-Lip - A 2D side-scrolling shooter by SNK. Rick & Brook must save the Earth's space colony from the Cyber-Lip, a computer gone mad!!

Level 27 - Sheng Long - In the English version of Street Fighter II, after winning, Ryu said "You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance." While the actual reference was to one of Ryu's moves, gamers thought it referred to a person. This was enhanced when EGM made a famous April Fool's joke claiming that Sheng Long was an unlockable boss.

Level 28 - Bionic Commando - Classic NES game in which you played as a bionic commando who could not jump, but had a nifty extending bionic arm that let you swing from stuff. Truly kick-ass.

Level 29 - Radiant Silvergun - An excellent top-down shooter for the Sega Saturn by Treasure.

Level 30 - Wicked Sick! - The award earned in UT2k4 for 30 consecutive frags without a death.

Level 31 - Ippon! - A reference to Karate Champ, possibly the first arcade martial-arts game. As a side note, I used to kick ass at that game. That charging bull didn't stand a chance against my mighty spinning back kick.

Level 32 - Snake Eater - The subtitle to the third game in the Metal Gear Solid series.

Level 33 - Goombella - Mario's first ally in Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, she was particularly useful in giving you information about your foes and location.

Level 34 - Paramecium - I believe this is from Forgotten Worlds for the Turbografx-16. At the end of a stage, your character proclaims, "You cannot stop me with paramecium alone!" Apparently it also appeared in Aero Fighters 2 for the NeoGeo.

Level 35 - Stitches - An epic mob in World of Warcraft.

Level 36 - Radical Ninja - It was the subtitle to the old NES game Kid Niki, an old sidescrolling platformer by Irem.

Level 37 - Heiankyo Alien - A Gameboy game in which you had to prevent an alien invasion of the peaceful town of Kyo...by digging holes with a shovel.

Level 38 - DJ Boy - The best side-scrolling roller skating fighter ever to appear on the Sega Genesis.

Level 39 - Max Force - Max's CO power in the excellent Advance Wars games on the GBA.

Level 40 - Abobo - Name of the boss in Double Dragon for the Neo-Geo.

Level 41 - Thunder Force - A classic series of side-scrolling action games for the Commodore 64, Genesis and Saturn.

Level 42 - Karnov - An arcade game (also on the NES) in which you played as a bald-headed fire-breathing brute. Karnov was a Muslim prince in the original arcade version, but possibly to avoid causing offense to Muslims, he became Jiborav Karnovsky, a Russian circus strongman, for the NES version.

Level 43 - Sword of Soran - A side-scrolling hack-and-slash for the Sega Genesis.

Level 44 - Violence Fight - A curiously-titled arcade fighting game in which the player chose one of four characters to compete in a series of one-on-one fights.

Level 45 - Mishima Zaibatsu - A fictional Japanese conglomerate from the Tekken series.

Level 46 - Mutoid Man - A boss from the arcade classic, Smash TV. As the host would say, "Total carnage! I love it!"

Level 47 - Jaquio - The villain from the Ninja Gaiden series for the NES.

Level 48 - Mr. Domino - A reference to No One Can Stop Mr. Domino!, a quirky but cute game for the Playstation. Also featured on some old Gamespot ads.

Level 49 - Kidd Thunder !! - A reference to Raiden's "Friendship" move in Mortal Kombat 2, in which he creates a miniature likeness of himself.

Level 50 - Strawberry Candy - One of the voice commands in LifeLine for the PS2.

Level 51 - Alien Hominid - A 2D side-scrolling shooter developed by The Behemoth that made the transition to consoles after starting its life as a web-based action game.

Level 52 - Spoony Bard - A rather odd insult from Final Fantasy IV. Spoony is a real word, meaning foolishly sentimental, but I can't imagine what thesaurus the translators used to come up with it when they were localizing FF4.

Level 53 - Zenny - Currency used to buy weapons and upgrades in Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 for the Playstation

Level 54 - Simon Says Bleed - From Demolition Man for the 3D0.

Level 63 - Big Smoke - Member of the Grove Street gang in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Emblems:

I've separated these into categories based on how they are awarded.

WHO YOU ARE:

Registered Member. Awarded for registering on Gamespot. Welcome aboard!

Requirements: Registering on Gamespot - who would have guessed?

Plus Subscriber. Awarded to members of the Gamespot Plus service. Entitled to privileged access.

Requirements: Give Gamespot some of your hard-earned - only $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year!

Total Access. Awarded to members of the Gamespot Total Access service. Entitled to VIP access.

Requirements: Give Gamespot more of your hard-earned - only $5.95 a month or $39.95 a year!

Ice_Radon.Because we needed a test subject. Ice_Radon is a longtime user of our community services, and, much like the Six Million Dollar Man, became the unwitting subject of an experiment. His user profile was the first to be imported into GameSpot's enhanced community services, and as such, we saw fit to give him a special commendation. Cheers, Ice.

Requirements: Being Ice_Radon. What a kick-ass emblem

WHAT YOU DO:

Beta Tester. After all, someone's got to do it. This individual is partly, if not just marginally, responsible for the present condition of the GameSpot message boards. Pages were diligently tested, complaints and occasional compliments were leveled, and so forth. So if you like what you see, do give this individual a word of thanks. Else, flame on...

Requirements: Originally given out for participation in the closed beta for these boards. Was also given to a select few individuals who actively participated in the GameCenter closed beta and Sneak Peek.

Moderator. For honorable service on the front lines. The relentless, eternally underappreciated peacekeepers of the GameSpot community deserve much more than this humble insignia for their unique abilities to ban losers, lock down junk threads, and perform other such disagreeable tasks in the name of the greater good.

Requirements: A severe masochistic streak and delusions of grandeur.

Staff.Representing the few, the strong, the proud, and the sleepy. This unique insignia belongs only to those currently employed by GameSpot or, rather, by its parent company, CNET Networks. GameSpot employees no longer get a complimentary membership to the local fitness center and are no longer permitted to rest or eat lunch, but, to make up for the downsized benefits suite, they get this beautiful insignia on their profile pages.

Requirements: Getting hired by Gamespot

Founder.Because someone must be held accountable for this mess. So, you want one of these, do you? Then why don't you just invent a time machine, travel back in time to 1995, come up with the idea for, and then actually build GameSpot?

Requirements: Being Vince Broady

Chip for Brains. Code jockey, development monkey, web slinger, whatever you want to call it... These people have consistently demonstrated superior technical aptitude and a stubborn-minded determination to Get The Job Done. They sweat the details so you don't have to. They make the pages fly like they were born to it. Put your hands together for the programmers. Word.

Requirements: Presumably, must have helped program this site. Note that the icon is an Athlon processor, not Intel. GS is teh bias!!!! OMG!!!

Chief Clown. We're all a bunch of bozos on this bus. But even among clowns there's gotta be a leader. One who stands frizzy hair and fake nose above the rest.

Requirements: I have no idea. Ankarino (a GS staff member) is the only person with this emblem currently.

Prolific Poster. For recognizing the importance of sheer volume. Prolific posters are at the core of the community. They set the example to which other members of our community aspire. Either that, or they make other members of the community wonder how on Earth they have so much time to spend on our message boards. Such incredible dedication!

Requirements: Being a spammer

News Hound. For never missing a beat. Ask the news hound anything about games and the news hound will give you the latest. This individual keeps close tabs on all of what's happening in the gaming industry, and gathers the latest information as though it were going out of style. In fact, the news hound would probably insist that only fresh news is worth reading.

Requirements: I would assume that this requires a certain amount of time reading news stories on Gamespot.

Firestarter. For inciting controversy at the drop of a hat. These brave souls keep the community moderators busy, but in their own way, they help make all our lives a little more interesting. Sometimes a lot more. They routinely generate the most heated topics of discussion, and are either famous or infamous for it within the community.

Requirements: I'm assuming these are hand-selected. Judging by the list, the requirements are just what the description suggests--people who are known for making a lot of controversial posts.

GuestSpotter. Because while everybody's got an opinion, some are better than others. This illustrious soul has volunteered to grace GameSpot's pages with an unforgettable editorial, which previously appeared in one of those weekly features that tends to creep up on Sundays. The very definition of selflessness. Or, in some cases, self-indulgence.

Requirements: Submitting a guest editorial to GS and having it selected for publication in the weekly Gamespotting. However, this feature has now been axed and replaced with Freeplay, so your chance to get this one has gone!

Commercial Challenge 2004 / Ballot Puncher:Your vote really DOES count. These discerning souls exercised their civic duty and rocked the vote in GameSpot's Commercial Challenge 2004. In doing so, they've sifted the commercial wheat from the chaff so that only the best and brightest remain. They've cast their votes for the good of all GameSpot... and they just happened to get entered into a fabulous sweepstakes in the process. What an amazing coincidence!

Requirements: Voting at least once in Gamespot's Commercial Challenge 2004. No longer available.

Insomniac Sleep is for the weak. The insomniac appreciates that GameSpot is open 24 hours a day, and forgoes the passive activity of sleeping to instead frequently pay us a visit in the wee hours. Those are the good times. They say you're only truly whole at night, after the day's work is done.

Requirements: Being at Gamespot's disposal 24/7.

Aspiring Designer. No shortage of good ideas. This rare emblem is carried by the few creative souls who became finalists in the ultra-competitive Developer for a Day contest. They put in countless hours formulating the perfect concept for a brand-new game, and we salute them for their effort and creativity. Perhaps GameSpot will be reviewing their games one day.

Requirements: Being selected as a finalist in the Developer for a Day contest.

Love song writer. For creating song lyrics about Valentine's Day at the drop of a pin. These talented souls contributed in the Love of Games Valentine Song Contest.

Requirements: Having one of the winning entries in the Valentine Song contest.

Readers' Choice 2004 Chooser.People's choice representative. All those who participated in GameSpot's 2004 Readers' Choice Awards will share this emblem, and have their collective decisions immortalized in those scarce few games that they rightfully placed among gaming's greatest.

Requirements: Participation in GameSpot's Readers' Choice Awards for 2004. No longer available.

Readers' Choice 2005 Chooser.Voted in 2005 Readers' Choice Awards. Administered to those who sounded off in GameSpot's 10th-annual Readers' Choice Awards, celebrating the best games of 2005.

Requirements: Participation in GameSpot's Readers' Choice Awards for 2005. No longer available.

Vote Rocker. For exercising one's inalienable right to vote. Rock on!

Requirements: Participation in any feature vote.

Voted Twice. For exercising one's inalienable right to vote. Not once, but TWICE! Rock on!

Requirements: Participation in any feature vote. Not once, but TWICE!

Artistic Genius.Because you've mastered that Photoshop gradient tool. Awarded to those whose artistic talents have helped beautify gamespaces all across the GameSpot landscape.

Requirements: Have a gamespace banner used on the site, get Bob Ross in return. What a deal!

HOW YOU REVIEW:

Way Harsh. For being tougher than beef jerky and not nearly as nice. You have to wonder why these individuals even bother continuing to play games, because pure venomous hatred practically oozes from their pores when playing just about anything. GameSpot's editors would be proud.

Requirements: Appears to relate to average score given in reader reviews. The people with this tag have all reviewed a substantial number of games and have given them average scores of 3.4 or lower.

Pushover. If only everything in life were this easy. This individual is extremely generous when it comes to evaluating games. Each new game is "definitely the best game I've ever played!", judging by the very high review scores being doled out here. Speculate all you want, but we both know you're just jealous.

Requirements: Looks like the requirements are a substantial number of reader reviews with a very high average score.

Outlier. For consistently going against the grain. Public opinion means nothing to the outlier, whose opinions frequently, if not usually, fly in the face of everybody else's. Either the outlier is crazy or everyone else is, and the outlier is pretty sure it's not the former of the two.

Requirements: Looks like it requires reviews that are substantially different than the average review for games. The people with this right now are fanboys who grade games on systems other than their chosen one badly out of spite.

Top 1000 Everyone's a critic.
But those bearing this distinct insignia are rather more experienced at being critical than most others out there. Their reviews are the ones you may well wish to gravitate towards as you pursue filling your game collection with the best-quality stuff out there, while burning away precious dollars you could be spending on, like, your unborn children's college tuition, or something.

Requirements: Being #501-1000 of Gamespot's best community reviews. Probably based on having a number of recommendations.

Top 500 Some opinions are better than others.
It's probably well worth listening to the individuals bearing this emblem, at least when it comes to getting good advice about which games to play and which games not to play. But when it comes to topics like cooking, religion, politics, stuff like that, you're still probably better off arguing with your parents or just keep all your feelings all bottled up inside, like a ticking time bomb, you sick, sick, twisted fiend.

Requirements: Being #500-101 of Gamespot's best community reviewers. Probably based on having a number of recommendations.

Top 100 Power and influence.
Those who rank amongst this hallowed 100 greatly benefit those searching for critical information about games. These individuals' thoughtful, analytical reviews tend to be much more detailed and sophisticated than most of the so-called professional game reviews you could find elsewhere. Sure enough, the top 100 tend to be prolific writers and avid game players.

Requirements: Being #100-1 of Gamespot's best community reviewers. Probably based on having a number of recommendations.

WHAT YOU PLAY:

Old-School. Been gaming since before it was cool. Those who are old-school have been actively busting joysticks, buttons, and gamepads for many years. One look at this individual's collection demonstrates this beyond a reasonable doubt. We salute this longtime aficionado.

Requirements: Unsure. Possibly having a certain number of NES-era games in your collection. I got this rank when NES became my preferred platform--not sure if it depends on the date of the earliest game in your collection, or on the era that is most common in your collection, or on some completely different factor.

Hella Old-School. Been gaming since you were a twinkle in your momma's eye. Those bearing the rare distinction of hella old-school have been gaming practically since the primordial days. What they could have possibly seen in the terrible, old games of yore is anyone's guess, and far be it from these individuals to easily be able to justify why they've managed to waste away so much of their lives racking up millions of points, saving unlimited princesses, and basically just shooting and/or jumping over lots of things.

Requirements: Not known--an uncommon rank. Seems to involve having a certain number of very old games in your collection.

Bad Taste.Bad meaning bad. Those perverse souls who insist on populating their personal collections with the worst kind of games are those with bad taste. Yet these individuals' transcendental pursuit of all that is broken and not fun to play is, perhaps, merely misunderstood. Nevertheless, they deserve recognition in their own way.

Requirements: Appears to be based on the average review scores of games in your collection. Appears to require a certain number of GS-reviewed games in your collection, or possibly just a certain number of total games in your collection.

Good Taste. For the connoisseur of fine games. Those with good taste are judicious about what games they add to their impressive collections, and would be reluctant to pollute their rows and rows of classics with anything approaching average quality. Ask these fine individuals for advice on what to buy next, because chances are, you won't go wrong by following their guidance.

Requirements: Appears to be based on the average review scores of games in your collection--the threshold is 8.5 (we think). This emblem also seems to require a certain number of GS-reviewed games in your collection, or possibly just a certain number of total games in your collection.

Serious Collector. Games are more important than paying for food or paying the bills. The serious collector has made a lifelong investment in the pursuit of having way more games than you do. Ignoring review scores, maintaining few friendships so as not to commit oneself to additional spending on birthdays or holidays, this individual is single-mindedly intent on owning lots and lots of games. A noble pursuit, indeed.

Requirements: Appears to require 200 or more games in your collection.

PC Aficionado. Personal computer = game system. PC aficionados are drawn to their home (or work) computers for their gaming thrills. And why shouldn't they? Are you saying you hate the PC?!

Requirements: Probably having a game collection dominated by PC games. The aficionado badges appear to require both a collection of a certain size, and a high percentage (some have suggested more than 50%) devoted to the system in question.

Playstation 2 Aficionado.Beats workstations. PlayStation 2 aficionados gravitate towards Sony's ubiquitous console for their gaming entertainment. And why shouldn't they? You got some kind of a problem with the PS2?!

Requirements: Probably having a game collection dominated by PS2 games. The aficionado badges appear to require both a collection of a certain size, and a high percentage (some have suggested more than 50%) devoted to the system in question.

PSP Aficionado. PSP aficionados never leave home without Sony's state-of-the-art, can-do-almost-anything gaming device. And why shouldn't they? Are you saying the PSP isn't the best portable ever conceived of by man?!

Requirements: Probably having a game collection dominated by PSP games. The aficionado badges appear to require both a collection of a certain size, and a high percentage (some have suggested more than 50%) devoted to the system in question.

Xbox Aficionado.Heavyweight gaming. Xbox aficionados lean towards Microsoft's heavy-duty machine for their gaming escapades. And why shouldn't they? You got something against the Xbox?!

Requirements: Probably having a game collection dominated by Xbox games. The aficionado badges appear to require both a collection of a certain size, and a high percentage (some have suggested more than 50%) devoted to the system in question.

GameCube Aficionado.Handle with care. GameCube aficionados lean towards Nintendo's neatly designed system for their adventures in gaming. And why shouldn't they? You got a problem with the GameCube?!

Requirements: Probably having a game collection dominated by GC games. The aficionado badges appear to require both a collection of a certain size, and a high percentage (some have suggested more than 50%) devoted to the system in question.

Game Boy Advance Aficionado.Portable power source. Game Boy Advance aficionados are inclined towards Nintendo's popular portable game system for their gaming enjoyment. And why shouldn't they? Are you saying you think all portable games are for kids?!

Requirements: Probably having a game collection dominated by GBA games. The aficionado badges appear to require both a collection of a certain size, and a high percentage (some have suggested more than 50%) devoted to the system in question.

Finger lickin' good. DS aficionados lean towards Nintendo's touch friendly portable for all of their gaming joys. And why shouldn't they? Are you saying you still think portable games are for kids?!

Requirements: Probably having a game collection dominated by DS games. The aficionado badges appear to require both a collection of a certain size, and a high percentage (some have suggested more than 50%) devoted to the system in question.

WHO YOU KNOW:

Neighborly.Love thy neighbor. Those who are neighborly have a good number of mutual friendships, and the community as a whole is better off for them. Perhaps these individuals, in actuality, live in college dorm rooms, parents' basements, dingy apartments, or other such facilities devoid of actual, physical neighbors. Like, you know, the ones who come over to ask to "borrow" a cup of sugar or to use your lawnmower? Those worthless freeloaders, I swear... Oh, never mind.

Requirements: Judging by the emblem's URL, having between 10 and 24 friends on your friends list.

Convivial.Smashing good company. Convivial members of the community are friends to many others--no doubt, many others who are every bit as convivial as themselves! Indeed, such fine company these chaps and gentle-women truly are! Their company is often desirable and often available, and, being such convivial sorts, they are always looking to broaden their horizons by meeting more and more friends, colleagues, and associates. Why, you'd certainly invite them over for tea if you liked tea and knew where they lived.

Requirements: Judging by the emblem's URL, having between 25 and 49 friends on your friends list. I've had reports of people with as few as 21 friends on their list getting this icon, however. Perhaps GS is trying to deceive me?

Popular. Like, totally. Chances are you know individuals who are popular, and if you don't, chances are you wish you did. You wish you could be just like them, don't you? They're the ones who always score the touchdown. They're the ones who always get the girl. Or the boy, as the case may be. Those people and their winning smiles with their bright, white teeth and their clever jokes and their laughing and their personalities and their charm! What makes them so special, huh? What do they have that I don't have, why don't you tell me?!

Requirements: Judging by the emblem's URL, having 50 or more friends on your friends list.

NOTE: Users become friends if they track each other.

Is there any way to actually see any of King Frizzy's profile without an invitation/friends request i.e. what games he/she has reviewed, etc?
