[QUOTE="Thevenin167"]Not all of them, if the death penalty can scare some criminals out of killing inocents then its worth it in my books, the criminals should live in fear not the people.

The death penalty is not a deterrent. Its been demonstrated numerous times. Not only is it not a deterrent, but it costs more to the taxpayer to execute someone than to imprison them for life.
Certainly, the death penalty does not deter against first-time murderers, but studies has shown that the death penalty is very effective in detering recidivism among re-offenders. And while it's true that the death penalty cost more than sentencing a person to life, that's because the death-row inmates exploited the court system by filing unnecessary appeals to delay their execution, thereby racking up the legal fees at the taxpayers' expense. If the criminal justice system limit the amount of appeals that death-row inmates can seek, not only it would prevent them from abusing the appeals system, but it would also save both the taxpayers' money and the court's time. Considering the fact that prison overcrowding is increasing at an alarming rate, I think the death penalty can serve as an attractive alternative to life imprisonment.
