Okay, i already posted another similar music thread, but can someone explain the differences in sound between death metal and black metal? I know black metal is from a different part of the world and it's often Satanic. But in terms of sound i think black metal sounds pretty much like fast death metal with higher screams as against death growls...

This is the part where I come in and express my dislike for metal, which makes you ask me why I even clicked on the topic in the first place if I don't like metal, and then I respond with an "lol" or some other witty masterpiece.

Both pretty terrible in my opinion but I guess I'll have to go with Death Metal only because I like Deathcore and its closer to death metal then black metal.

i could be wrong on this, but i think black metal is usually faster, sounds sloppier (to me, anyways), and ..... raw..er? idk, i don't have a wide knowledge of what makes the genres different from each other.

Black Metal tends to focus on atmosphere, with simpler riffs and higher pitched shrieks for vocals. Death Metal tends to focus on technical ability and/or crushing riffs. More Technical riffs and lower guttural growls for vocals.

Black metal = atmosphere, experience, journeys, minimalism Death metal = intensity, riffs, complexity, technicality The differences between black and death metal are easy to hear, but are difficult to explain.

Generally speaking, black metal is more atmospheric, uses tremolo picking which can employ faster riffs and/or more melody, and higher-pitched shrieking vocals. Death metal, is often heavier, with growling vocals, and has more room for technicality I guess you could say. Both genres have many of their own sub-genres and fusion genres that have different sounds, but this is basically what they are in a nutshell.

Traditional pretty much has nothing to set the bands apart from each other, and their vocals just suck.. Slam as great vocals, interesting riffs, and slams.

Death Metal is low, gutteral growls and technical and complex riffs. Black Metal is simpler riffs (but still fast) and higher shrieking vocals.

IMO Death Metal>Black Metal, but both are awwwwwwwesome. \m/

Death Metal is generally heavier sounding than black metal and in lower tunings. Contrary to what people may tell you, Black Metal isn't necessarily faster. Listen to Nile, Necrophagist, Cannibal Corpse, Origin, Dying Fetus and Beneath the Massacre and you'll see what I mean. The prominent vocal style in death metal is the death grunt. And Death Metal tends to be more technical with its complex song structures and tempo changes.

Black Metal uses a lot of distortion in favor of creating a raw atmosphere to it and is usually in a higher tuning. Tremolo picking is in use more often than in Death Metal. The music can be very fast. So blast beats and double bass are used. Screams/shrieks are the common vocal style. It can be very dissonant and repetitive at times. Then again this all depends on what type of black metal you are listening to.

Both genres have evolved so much since their beginnings that it's hard to pinpoint the exact differences without listing all the characteristics of their sub-genres as well.

This, a million times this. It's easy to tell the difference: Listen to Gorgoroth's Carving a Giant, then listen to Death's painkiller, the difference is pretty obvious

Deathcore is much much different than Death Metal. I'm not an expert but most metal heads say that Death core uses too many "breakdowns" and has boring riffs, with annoying vocals. Anyway I still prefer Deathcore over Black and Death

All you need to know is that Death Metal is VASTLY superior to deathcore, pretty much anything with -core is junk, and death is no exception
