I was forced to learn stick because my first car was manual. It sucked at first but it's second nature now. Every now and again when I'm driving an automatic I'll occasionally try to depress the invisible clutch in anticipation of shifting, then realize that it's an automatic lol.

It was how I learned to drive when I first took my drivers license. I like it a lot more.

Sort of. I learn how to operate it when my step dad was driving me around in his stick shift car. He let me change his gears for him, though he'd smack my hand when I didn't get it out of neutral fast enough...:P

Yes. I've had 5 cars of my own - all of them have been manual. I don't know if I even know how to drive an automatic.Engrish_Major

after driving a manual consitently, the first time you try to drive an automatic, there is this akward re-aclimation phase where your reaching for the clutch only to realise like 30 seconds later that its not there.

Yes I can, and I'm licensed to shift one of these babies, an 18-speed RoadRanger. This transmission is the only one strong enough to handle the torque of a 600 HP diesel engine.:o

Yeah, my first car was a stick and I used one to learn how to drive. Haven't driven one since 1985 or thereabouts.

I had to learn so I could drive company trucks around at my summer job. It was fun! I wish my car was a manual.

Yep, both cars I've had were manual, and it's all I drive. I hate automatics.

Manual reminds me of an old tv without a remote, just the dials you gotta spin and click.

 Not so in an 18-wheeler, you can shift through the gears without ever using the clutch.

i have a problem with automatics that i always leave it in drive when i park because i'm not used to having to put a car into "park" when i stop to get out.

I am from the UK so manual isnt that big of a deal to drive, its not even hard, the test in the UK is pretty bad though and nerve racking. I passed about 2 month ago, I would definatly pick a manual car over an automatic because you just have way more control, plus I dont even really think about changing gears anymore I just know when to do it. Also going 40mph in second gear with my 4" exhaust is loud :D

Yes. I learned about 6 and a half years ago. I did it the hard way.. By buying a car with a manual transmission without knowing how to drive stick. I stalled it about 8 or 9 times on the way home.

hartsickdiscipl

Was a great, adrenaline-inducing experience.

Would do again.

Yes, but don't get much opportunity. It connects driver to car in a way other transmissions just can't replicate.

I've only ever driven an automatic a couple of times - kind of weirds me out a little and I end up driving like an old woman.

Sure, until the transmission goes and on an automatic you have to buy a whole new one but with a manual you can buy the parts that went instead making it cheaper to fix.

Yes, I have owned about 10-12 manual cars, though my latest is a twin clutch DSG automatic.

You probably won't be able to buy a true manual within 10 years.

I drive an automatic, and I miss manual which before I drove for 15+ years. Plus my car is a sports model (I was unable to find a manual version). It still has a stick I can put into a manual mode and down/up shift, but without clutch-play it's not the same. I also live on a mountain so I'd like to be able to use gears for braking. Yea, I'm looking forward to my next stick shift.

No and the only reason really is that my parents never owned a manual so I just grew up around automatics. I doubt really that I will ever buy a manual since I have no idea how to drive it.

It is also more fuel efficient, safer (greater driver control) and less costly (automatics cost more initially, and in maintenance). Also, with a manual, if you lose a gear, you can still pick others and continue to drive. Auto breaks? Game over. Canada/USA are the only two countries on the planet where the automatic transmission is valued and preferred.

Yes and my preference is based on the car I currently drive. Right now that'd be an automatic. Perhaps someday it will be a manual.

Yeah! I prefer it a lot, but I don't have to deal with start and stop traffic where I live. Really is the only thing to have in a mustang, it just seems wrong to have an automatic in a muscle car.

I have kind of had to learn since my fiancee's car is a manual. I do NOT prefer it though because there is a lot of stop and go traffic where I live, not to mention hills. To top it off everyone rides really close, so on hills it can be pretty nerve wrecking.
