  • Use Somebody - Kings of Leon
  • Zero - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I just realized a few things trying to figure out what came out this year ...

  1. Popular music sucks
  2. I don't follow the trends
  3. I am a few years behind
  4. I need some new music

Good answer.

So far, my favourite is "While You Wait for the Others" by Grizzly Bear. "My Girls" by Animal Collective is a hell of a track, too.

It was better than their last two at the very least.

*sigh* People are going to be going on about how much they hate the album for the next 3 years, it was actually pretty damn good. It was better than Black Holes at the very veryleast.

It was ok, it was about as good as black holes but I wouldnt say its better. Their lyrics seem to be getting cheesier and dumber each album though. Origin of Symmetry is still their best by far, but The Resistance wasnt bad. i would give it a 6. There are tons of better albums this year though.

Beat me to it...

I am getting more and more into that album, it may not be as accesable as in abesntia and lightbulb sun but as a single work it is amazing. One of their best by far. The best part of the first track though is the last section I Drive the Hearse, such a beautiful song. i love the new theme of the album, the idea of the incident being a term we use to seperate ourselves from tragic events. I read a great interview with steven wilson where he talked about the themes of the album, for example that section called The Seance is based on a Seance he did when he was younger. He also seems pretty anti religous, not in an athestic way but he seems like a pretty big skeptic of society in general, which seems to be the overall theme of the new album too.

There's been nought that's intrested me, and it's better than Black Hole for the last 3 tracks alone. OoS is definately the best, but The Resistance is still a good album. I wasn't impressed by Absolution either, one of the most overated albums on this site.

Honestly though, what albums are you talking about? And let's just excuse Porcupine Tree from this because I don't think they are as remarkable as people make them out to be. I'm going to need a serious flame shield for this, but I found they don't try hard enough to make each track feel distinctly diffrent on an album. I'm not saying I don't like them, I'm just saying I'd take Muse over them based on their previous efforts.

Best song in 2009 was probably a remake of a song written 30+ yrs ago, this is because the music industry has been getting worse ever since, just check the Grammys, VMAs or another crappy show and the clowns that participate and get awards, pathetic...

I think The Incident works better than fear of a blank planet though, both lyrically and in terms of the themes. It feels more subtle while fear of a blank planet was a bit blunt with its themes. Did you think disk 2 of the incident was as good as the first? Also what is your favorite song from the new frost album experiments in mass appeal:P

Disk 2 wasn't as good as Disk 1, but I really liked it. Flicker and Remember Me Lover are amazing songs.

Welcome to Nowhere is my favorite song from Experiments in Mass Appeal. I love the way it builds up to the explosive chorus.

EDIT: It came out in '08 in Europe, '09 in the US. :P I just went with what Zune software told me.

Yeah, Uprising is a pretty solid song.

I can't really think of a song that I've truly loved from 2009.

The lyrics are not what make a song, not by a longshot. Lyrics should allways be secondary to the music, allways. Sometimes I'd rather just listen to music without lyrics, because frankly quite often you finda vocalist who is not particularly good will take lead on a song, and the whole thing becomes ruined. To be quite honest, anything that isn't about sex or relationships is fine by me. Personally I love the more over the top style. At the very least it helps distinguish them from other artists.I take it you don't like Rush though?

I havn't listened to any of those, except from mabye the Manic Street Preachers, but I will do so now to see if anything appeals to me. If they are better than an album I actually like thenit may be worthwhile, but something tells me we're on completely diffrent wavelengths.

The lyrics? :|

WasntAvailable

Dredg- The Pariah, the parrot, the delusion

Frost- Experiments in mass appeal

If you like Muse, check out the 2 bands I didn't deleate in Film-Guy's post.

I didnt say it was a bad album, I am just getting bored of their over the top almost queen sounding music these days. They get monotonous for me much faster than porcupine tree, and yes i think the lyrics are pretty mediocre. These are just a few albums I thought were better this year.

Phideaux- Number Seven

Manic street preachers- Journal for plague lovers

The Dear Hunter: Act 3: Life and Death

Super furry animals- Dark Days/ Light Years

Beardfish- Destined Solitare

O.S.I- Blood

Bill Callahan- Sometimes I wish we were an eagle

Mew- No more stories are told today

Oceansize- Frames

Mount Eerie- Lost Wisdom

Dredg- The Pariah, the parrot, the delusion

Frost- Experiments in mass appeal

Pendragon- Pure

The Horrors- Primary Colours

I see what you are saying, but lyrics are still a part of the song. Some bands like Nick Cave and the bad seeds have more of a focus on lyrics and their lyrics are fantastic for the most part. For what its worth i like the new muse album, i probably just need to get into it more. It takes a few listens for me usually, but overall I would say it is better than black holes. What is your favorite Muse album? If you are into music without lyrics do you like ambient music or post rock? I love music without lyrics too, that way you can listen to their musicianship. You might like the Mahavishu Orchestra.

Dredg is there... I kept it in your post in the quote tree. Dredg and Frost strike me as fairly similar to Muse.

Hybrid times from the new Riverside album Anno Domino high definition is another song I really liked this year. Any prog metal fans here might like Riverside.

Catch Without Arms is my favorite. I haven't listened to the new one that too long to type out very much, but I do like it.
