This has been a good year for horror films overall. Now that the decade is over I can make this thread with more purpose. I know some people dont think it is the end of the decade yet, well many actually. With that said here are my choices.

1. Let the right one in

http://andromeda.plymouthlibrary.org/blog/libchoice/images/let%20the%20right%20one.jpg

Despite many contenders this comes out on top. It is both touching, funny, and disturbing. One of the few films that improves on the book. I hope the two main kids in the film have good careers. They are natural actors.

2. Kairo

http://www.siamzone.com/movie/pic/2001/kairo/poster2.jpg

This is one of the few films this decade that I actually felt the atmosphere of the film. It was filled with dread, and creepyness. Shows that asian horror films are some of the best around.

3. Session 9

http://www.obscurehorror.com/session9.jpg

David Caruso can act! Well kinda. The director who did this film did Transiberian, and The Mashinist.

4. A Tale of two sisters

http://goregirl.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/a-tale-of-two-sisters.jpg

A great film with a surprisingly good remake.

5. Make out with violence

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/9445/posterfinallgpage2jj9.jpg

A very weird indie horror film. Very dark and funny.

6. Martyrs

http://www.impawards.com/intl/misc/2008/posters/martyrs_ver2.jpg

7. The Devil's backbone

http://onemonkeyshow.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/the-devils-backbone-2.jpg

8. The Orphanage

http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2007/11/05/the-orphanage-poster.jpg

9. 28 days later

http://www.mrosen.com/public.assets/movies/28%20Days%20Later.jpg

10. Deadgirl

http://contexts.org/socimages/files/2009/07/dead-girl-poster.jpg

If you found a hot chained up zombie girl would you take advantage of her? Actually dont answer that.

11. The Mist

http://www.horrorphile.net/images/the-mist-movie-poster12.jpg

12. Paranormal activity

http://blogs.suntimes.com/scanners/assets_c/2009/10/paranormal-activity-poster-thumb-300x444-12603.jpg

13. Shutter

http://ika524.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/shutterposter.jpg

14. [REC]

http://garbledzombie.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/rec500mi4.jpg

15. Shaun of the dead

http://1416andcounting.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/300px-shaun-of-the-dead1.jpg

16. House of the devil

http://theaterofmine.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/rsz_house-of-the-devil-poster1.jpg

17. American psycho

http://www.behindthehype.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/american-psycho.jpg

18. Saw

http://mymoviebanners.com/pics/saw/saw-1.jpg

Despite the awful sequels, this is still a good film.

19. The Descent

http://www.moviexclusive.com/review/descent/poster.jpg

20. Pontypool

http://www.best-horror-movies.com/image-files/pontypool-horror-movie-poster.jpg

I may have made a thread like this before, but this is my final list. Remember there are starving children.

seeing as how shaun of the dead made it on the list, I think Zombieland deserves a spot also. After all, neither of them are scary, but both are really funny

Really good list there, as always.

Though I would've included Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. It was hilarious and incredibly unsettling at the same time. And it was one of very few horror movies with a plot twist that wasn't incredibly predictable.

I am extremely disapointed that High Tension (Haute Tension) was not on there, FilmGuy, you should know better! :P

Also, a guilty pleasure of mine is 30 Days of Night...I herald as the return of the Nosferatu, and the demise of the sexy tolerant vampire! Huzzah!

28 Days, Saw, The Grudge (unrated), The Devil's Rejects. Not in that order.

EDIT: Oh yeah, definately High Tension.

This is why I find it so difficult to watch horror movies. The Mist, which you rightfully have up there, was phenomenal in IMO. Saw, which you have very close to it, was terrible IMO. It's very hard to get good recommendations on horror films because tastes on them tend to differ so wildly.

Let The Right One In is the best horror movie this decade. In regards to the scariest movie, I don't know. To start, I haven't seen half the films on your list.

I agree, I almost want to nominate it for one of the top films of the decade as well.

And yea, it is not the scariest by far. In fact, the majority of the movie is far from scary. But the fact is, its a horror movie, and yet it is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen.

It raises soooo many questions, too, and I have so much fun coming up with answers to them as well

If we're going by how scary a movie is, then Paranormal Activity.

It's the only film that's legitimately scared me in a long time.

It's funny this thread should be made, because I was reminded, as a result of some snowfall here earlier, of this film for the first time in months earlier on. The short clips of snowfall at night on one side of the screen and total blackness on the other side is one of my favourite shots in a movie. Absolutely stunning. And the ending of the film aswell in the pool... Man. I need to see this again.

This is a little off topic, but am I the only one who hates how horror movies this decade have become ridiculously violent?

I think Paranormal Activity is a really good example of a movie that manages to be pretty scary while being pretty tame in terms of blood and gore.

Can't agree with Shaun of the dead, 28 days later, or saw.

To me there were really only a handfull of horror movies I liked and they arn't well liked by die hard movie buffs. The Ring, the Grudge, Freddy VS Jason, Jason X, Dawn of the Dead, and probably Noroi- The Curse.

UnrighteousFury

Horror movies have been extremely violent since atleast the late 70's/early 80's when the slasher flick became popular. I do hate that horror movies seem to have this requirement of having atleast 40 buckets of blood in it to be considered a "horror movie". I find PG-13 horror films far scarier than R ones because they can't rely on buckets of blood to be scary.

I agree

there are some films that require buckets of blood; slasher and zombie flicks to name a few.

But to be honest I would say the majority can get away with a splatter here and there, thats it.

The Ring is an excellent film. I love Naomi Watts. I also liked The Grudge, though the Japanese version is better.

I guess, but I feel like the violence in horror movies then was so much more cartoony than it is today.

yea the ending was just, wow. Ive never felt such hopelessness in my life, at least not from a movie.

I guess it was one of the few parts that did not go in line with Stephen King's writings, but the director actually got King's blessings to do the ending that way.

Thats what made the movie unique. The typical cliche hollywood ending gets repetitive. I saw that lost of hope, and completely came unexpected. Didn't expect that from a character who stayed strong and positive throughout 90% of the film

I would prefer that they just all died or something.. It at least would give some closure instead of the wtf ending.. The last time I had that reaction was at the end of the Berserk series.

Let the Right One In is probably the best. I'm not a fan of the genre mostly because the Hollywood ones are about as subtle as a sledge hammer and quite nasty.

I thoght the ending was kickass.

sSubZerOo

Thats what made the movie unique. The typical cliche hollywood ending gets repetitive. I saw that lost of hope, and completely came unexpected. Didn't expect that from a character who stayed strong and positive throughout 90% of the film

I would prefer that they just all died or something.. It at least would give some closure instead of the wtf ending.. The last time I had that reaction was at the end of the Berserk series.

Well I think that made the film more noticeable compared to modern horrors of today. Even for being different to the Original book, I think it did good laying out good story telling with an unimaginable plot, with a mild cliff hanger

Let the Right One In is hardly a horror movie, no matter how good it is.Neon-Tiger
It has vampires, supernatural elements. When does a film become a horror movie? Lets not split hairs.

Both the OT favouries, imdb and the beloved Wiki call it a horror film!!

EDIT: Teeth is a terrible film ;)

Teeth was awesome lol, Ill just assume that wink means "just kidding"

the social commentary alone makes it worth viewing, then you take the story, which is a modern incarnation of a millenias-old story, and its great.

Although, as a male, I have to admit I had moments where I just couldnt stand it, but my false machismo would not let me say "I am scared" so I was tempted to call it a bad movie to save face.

I assume that is what all other males that have seen it and dislike it went through.

:P

Hey somebody else has seen Pontypool! I was quite pleased with that film and it completely surpised me as I just went into it blind without any knowledge on the subject matter.

For me the story was the problem. It never developed into anything substantial. It has one shock idea and then sinks into repetition. The movie is less than 90 minutes I think.

The social comment to me never amounts to anything more than 'practice safe sex' only in the most distasteful, grotesque form.

Adding to this flat charactersiation and wooden performances. "Purity" - gimme a break.

I'm not saying this necessarily about you but there's a lot of other people, like imdb people, who like to inflate the qualities of that film just because of its "concept".

Little surprise it went straight to DVD here.
