[QUOTE="Hexagon_777"]American spelling really is more efficient. Then again, you have words like aluminum. Also, the way dates are written...lol.Tylendal
Removing letters isn't efficiency, it's sloppiness. :|

Do not dare defy me. Removing something that requires more effort with no further gain is more efficient last I checked.

[QUOTE="DarkOfKnight"] Those accents are worth keeping, words are words but the accents give British English an added style. Lot of immigration to the UK and that can kill off accents. Happened in the USA.DarkOfKnight

Maybe one day they'll drift out of sight but the country is still riddled with a vast array of accents and colloquialisms. You'll find immigration introduces foreign colloquialisms and slang words into language. Sri Lanken immigration for e.g. has seen words such as skets and nang creap in the vocab of our countries little uns. Tis not a bad thing - I like the idea of a mashed up language anyway...

I would prefer they stay, it makes your english very unique. The USA had lots of accents, but mass immigration killed off a few of them. Doesn't have to, just so long as you make attempts to help them adopt the accents. I noticed some Americans would go to the UK and come back with thick accents.

I don't think accents will be flushed out anytime soon. I still can't understand Scots (or rather Glasgow) accent anymore than I can the Geordie.

.....Way to pay attention there. There are accents across the USA that are dying or dead. I never meant all were gone, just that mass immigration has either weakened or killed some. Even the southern twang has weakened in some areas.

That could also be interpreted as an abreviation of 'under celery' or asking someone to stop their blubbery.

Take away a few of our beloved letters and the eruption of misconstrudalisms would be horrfic. Society would fall and break.

Yes - cups are known as faries over in the UK. When someone British next asks you if you fancy a fairy of tea you can now nod sagely.

Cool.

I never knew "pavement" and "sweets" were considered British words though. :P

Possibly relevant: I'm a bit guilty of the opposite. I spell "Thru" as Through, and "Nite" as Night.

It is often thanks to the media, like radio, TV, movies, games, and more that use a very un-accented English that people pick up on it. Many of my friends from across the country don't have the accents their parents and grandparents have.

In Australia we use a mix of the words in that article. For example I have NEVER heard anyone say 'flashlight' here - everyone says torch - while people will always say 'tuxedo' and not 'dinner suit'. Here though, a lot of American English is frowned upon especially in high school - once kids get past that really young age and leave primary school, they will likely get told off for using American English because most English teachers here don't believe it sounds very sophisticated. I'd say American English is more prominent in the Australian youth, but in High School people are taught to ignore it.

I should have mentioned that. An accent is picked up the more you hear it, the US media is very national and this can cause some regional accents to get ignored. Better regional TV would help, the regional TV here sucks and what is there is mostly in Spanish. To point this out, I was watching a lot of BBC America for a while and started to pick up a type of British accent..It was fvcking annoying.

I'm from the United Kingdom and I use certain words that would be considered American. For example, out of the words on the article table, I say garbage truck instead of dustbin lorry, and tuxedo instead of dinner suit.

I spilt some fairy cake on my dinner suit so i put it in the dustbin on my pavement for the dustbin lorry to take away. I spilt some cupcake on my tux, so i put it in the garbage on my sidewalk for the garbage truck to haul away. I'll stick to murrican words with british spelling.

English English is the best English.
