The UK government is introducing a legislation that allows them to monitor all emails, website visits, phone calls & text messages in the UK.

Story

I hope this is an april fools joke, albeit an epic one, since the legislation was first mentioned in 2009...

What do you think of this? I think it is a complete breach of everyones privacy.

Sorry if already posted.

You already seem to be monitored from the very moment you leave the comfort of your homes. Now they can monitor you while you're inside, too.

"It is vital that police and security services are able to obtain communications data in certain circumstances to investigate serious crime and terrorism and to protect the public," a spokesman said. LOL Got to love these USA levels of fear mongering.

They've been trying this for years, as did the previous government, and it didn't pass because of the amount of criticism and other laws that it would contradict.

The CIA already monitors twitter, facebook, and youtube because it allows them to keep up to date on conflicts, possible epidemics etc.

Seems like a dumb time to be brining this in with our GOVT's popularity at an all time low. Still I'm sure it's for crime etc, I doubt they really care who goes on porn and who doesn't.

From the BBC article: 'But it would enable intelligence officers to identify who an individual or group is in contact with, how often and for how long. They would also be able to see which websites someone had visited [without a warrant].'

From the BBC article: 'But it would enable intelligence officers to identify who an individual or group is in contact with, how often and for how long. They would also be able to see which websites someone had visited [without a warrant].'

I think the preceding sentence is the cogent one: "A new law - which may be announced in the forthcoming Queen's Speech in May - would not allow GCHQ to access the content of emails, calls or messages without a warrant. But it would enable intelligence officers to identify who an individual or group is in contact with, how often and for how long." So they can't do anything without a warrant. Any internet company can see what you're doing online right now. All they're asking is that they be able to have that information too. They can't actually do anything with that information unless they have a warrant to do so, which falls under all the usual rules of warrants; they need a good reason. It all seems fairly reasonable to me.

Don't you think that the use of the word 'but' implies that what follows does not require a warrant? Otherwise, there would be no reason to start the sentence with 'but'.

Fair enough. I would suggest that the vast majority of people do, though, and there are serious questions as to the ethics of government snooping on people's internet history despite widespread objection.

I agree that if people dont like it they shouldn't do it. That's something the UK government seemed to forget long ago; they are there at the behest of the people. Of course that's not to say the government cannot do something unpopular; the slave trade would still be going strong if that were the case, but i do think the government here goes too far sometimes in just flat-out ignoring what people want.

I know right? Soon every country will be so afraid to sh!t themselves that humanity will just digress into pigs relegated to a government-approved trough of information.
