Personally, I would be very straightforward with the kid.
"Smoking is bad for you, therefore you wont smoke again. End of story."

The mother is just as stupid as her moron husband if she doesn't divorce him and get the hell out of there, I don't understand why anyone would stay with a person who was harming their children. The child needs to be taken into a rehabilitation program asap to free him from the addiction.

I guess enough people would have to use it the way I did (I have never heard it used that way...it just went with bloom'er' that you used) -in that sense it is grammatically correct (same as bloomer is)...it is just not a part of the common vernacular -it is only used (as far as I know) as wilt (the flowers will will wilt away...or a person about to die) or wilted (she wilted away) or wilting
