Three 6 Mafia and a bunch of guys, "Still Fly"
Man, what a fukking slumper. Probably my lead contender for mainstream song of the year; just when I though T6M were played out they just blow the doors off it; five stars.

Slim Thug, "I Ain't Heard of That"
"I'm hear for the takeover
No, not to replace Hova
But there's a new hustler in town
I'm here, the wait is over"
While I would say TI is likely going to be the successor to Jay-Z's throne as the best mainstream rapper, in a couple albums Slim could be up there too.

I'm seriously tired of T.I. He just fails to impress me for some reason, but I can see Slim Thug taking over the mainstream.

I like Zion I's summary of T.I. the best: "what this kid lacks in subject matter he more than makes up for with a gang of heart and loads of just straight-up **** talkin'".
Okay, maybe there's more to it than that; I wouldn't take much away from him lyrically. He's grown leaps and bounds lyrically on his last album and, like Zion said, the dude just has heart; there's a conviction to his flow that just makes me want to hear what he's got to say. And beyond that, he's got a versatility I haven't seen by anyone in the mainstream since .... Jay-Z. The dude can rock a party jam like "Bring 'Em Out" and then sound fierce as hell on something like "You Don't Know Me"; he can go east-coast "Tha King" or south "Countdown"; and so on. Dude's just full of potential, and his next album is really going to seal his fate in my opinion. God I hope it doesn't suck.
Slim Thug definetely has that potential, though ... he's definetely the most underrated major label southern rapper at the moment, imo ...
Keak Da Sneak feat Turf Talk, "3 Freaks"
Well, it's just been made official:Â DJ Shadow did produce this song.
Somehow I just feel that goes leaps and bounds to legitimize this whole New Bay rap movement; it's really to see how people are overlooking this style of music, and for someone as credible as DJ Shadow to get on the bandwagon just might be what it takes for close-minded white boy backpackers to realize there's something else good in the underground, and they shouldn't feel guilty about liking it.
That said, though, if this track does get the Bay any attention, it's rather unfortunate since I'd say it's not one of the year's best (and if the Bay does indeed blow up like it might when The Team and The Federation release their next albums, we'll probably see alot of non-Bay producers trying out this style ... and unfortunately for them, even if you're DJ frickin' Shadow, some styles you're just not cut out for); probably not even one of my 50 favorite Bay songs this year.
Edit: I guess the song is really that bad; it just seems to be trying too hard to be a stand-alone instrumental beat. I know most of the New Bay beats these days blow the doors off what the other coasts are doing, but as a producer you have to restrain yourself ... there's really too much going on in this beat for anyone to flow over it.

Keak Da Sneak feat Turf Talk, "3 Freaks"
Woah ... now that I've heard the final version, I'm starting to change my mind on this ... the end of this song is absolutely stunning.
And apparently the song is actually going to be on DJ Shadow's upcoming cd, which makes me think this is probably the coolest thing Shadow has ever done. I know what most average DJ Shadow fans are like, and they're just going to hate this song ... props to Shadow for doing what he wants; that really changed my mind since at first it looked like he was just going bandwagon.

Mike Jones, "Cuttin' (Remix)"
My god is this song dope. Swear to god, best use of yodeling in rap since De La Soul's "Plug Tunin'". I'm borrowing the cd off of a friend, and I have to say, after a couple plays through, I probably like it better than Paul Wall's cd.
