Personally, I think Zelda. After all it is a legend.
But please: feel free to confirm or refute my opinion.

it depends on the person.
Some people like to dress up like a young elvin boy with a green shirt/hat
some people like to dress up like a blond human girl inside of a space suit.
I don't like doing either, I just like playing games.
This is pretty easy, Zelda definitely. Metroid may a huge map but it never feels bigger than whatever room/cavern you're in whereas Hyrule's sweeping plains and populated towns give a much broader feel. It also helps that it's story is not hidden in copius amounts of text, has characters that are actaully worth caring about, and a bit more gameplay variety rather than just shooting or rolling around.
Metroid is still my favorite franchise and I doubt that'll ever change.
But by my definition of epic, I would have to say Zelda wins that trophy. In metroid, you are pretty much just clearing out areas of hostile aliens, while in Zelda, you are interacting with an entire little kingdom. I guess if Metroid had the towns and NPC interactions that Zelda had, they would be equal in the epic department. Metroid is kinda like taking a Zelda game and just stringing the dungeons together while removing the overworld. Which I actually like better, but that's just me.

I kind of agree with this, except for the not liking the overworld part.
