Well no one is forcing you to have friends, I mean it only takes a few secs to find an opponent anyway. Also on all online systems you have to log in before playing, it would be a security risk if you stayed logged in.

If you're talking about the connection, that's just a problem with the game. For the first few days Mario Strikers was lagging like crazy, but now it's starting to get better.
