Sorry for my misunderstanding but there is quite a lot of Pokemon out there. Is it like Pokemon Diamond / Pearl but another version of it or something? Or an entirely different game?

Pokemon Platinum is like an expansion for Diamond and Pearl with extra content and new pokemon (59 I believe)

Just like they have Crystal and Emerald.

Yeah I've had the same question beacause I haven't played any of the extension games like emerald and crystal. Also is it on the same map as diamond/pearl?

Platinum is the same as Pearl/Diamond, but with a lot of added content, therefore you can play platinum without having the other two.

Think of it as the third version for the 4th generation series.

Just like yellow for red and blue (green for japanese)

Crystal for gold and silver

Emerald for sapphire and rubi.
