i used to pwn very hard all the time. but i took a break from it for about a year and ive lost my touch with all my old characters. when brawl is released, ill have a fresh start.
I'm just starting to get into Melee. I was never really into it, because I was still playing the original for N64, so I bought it about a month ago, and haven't put it down yet. It's not very hard, but playing against real people is much more of a challenge than the compter at it's hardest. I think that the computer is too predictable: They always go for the person closest to them, and if you just sit in the corner by yourself, the computer players will just fight eachother and leave you alone. But "very hard" isn't that much of a challenge, but with only like 2 or 3 lives, that's a different story.
Very Hard is pretty easy at this point. Though, trying to do it without losing a life is quite a challenge and very frustrating. The real challenge is in multiplayer though, for sure.
The best way to get good at Smash Bros is to play against 3 players on the same team (Red, Blue, or Green team so they can't damage each other), human or CPU opponents (if CPU, use level 9 difficulty). A really good Smash Bros. player can handle this.
Oh, and make sure to pick difficult opponents like Link, Marth/Roy, and Captain Falcon (because anybody can beat 3 Jigglypuffs on the same team).
The beauty of a game that so many people are going to own is that every time you log on, you don't know if you are going to run into someone who will destroy you, or someone at your skill level- there will be plenty of both like in Mario Kart DS. There's alwasy going to be someone better than you, and always someone worse out there.

This is ironic because I was just thinking about that yesterday. Went to my brother's house yesterday and he has Melee now. I played with him before a couple of weeks ago, just fooling around b/c I haven't played in a while. This time I was trying to be serious and put the CPU players all up to the hardest level and got WHOOPED!!!! Its been at LEAST 2 years since I played Melee, I know I'm gonna be practicing on Melee and Brawl before I jump on-line and embarrass myself.
Very hard is pretty easy on all adventure modes, the only real trouble one would consider is the team matches on Classic mode and later on in All Star.
The best way to get better at it is to play with 3 other friends, even if they are about the same level as you. An average smash bros player is sometimes better than the computer on level 9. That's what I did, and now very hard is pretty simple.
hard is kinda my 'comfort zone' of playing. very hard is do-able with a character i like, but well its...very hard lol im mentally prepared to get pwned online when i get brawl.
