okay, my son is a gamer and his favorite games are the Mario ones, Lego ones, and Kingdom Hearts on the PS2 (which isnt a traditional RPG, just hack n slash n i think i took care of equipping his new abilities and armor, etc)... I think he'd love a good RPG that he could read and play on his own, but since he's only 7, i'm looking for the most kid friendly one. The new Final Fantasies, TWEWY, and Chrono Trigger look like great games i would play, but i dont have a DS and my son doesnt live with me, so what are ya'll suggestions?

ps. this thread is specifically asking for a suggestion with a 7 year old in mind for a newcomer to the genre, not general suggestion, so hopefully it wont get closed.

You know that an RPG 4 the NES (dragon warrior) would actually accommodate ur child. I know the graphics are lame compared to today's games but an RPG from earlier generation systems would suffice. Look into remakes of RPG classics on the DS...

I recommend the Pokemon games as well. I don't recommend Final Fantasy III or IV because those are remakes of old games and they're very difficult and punishingly hard. Also, Chrono Trigger has a appearance of cutesy graphics, but it is text heavy. So Pokemon is best.

Chrono Trigger is really a game that anyone can enjoy. I played it for the first time when i was quite young and was obsessed with it, i was a little older then what your son is(i guess i'd have been 11 or something) when i played it, but i do have a brother who is 4 years younger then i, putting him at 7 during the release of chrono on the snes, and he loved chrono trigger too. The game has alot of depth to it that an adult can appreciate, but a lot of imagination and lovable characters that can be really endearing to a young kid too. I strongly suggest you get this for him at some point, if this year is not the year, that's ok. Just don't forget to get him to try it soon enough, he'll thank you many years down the line. It's not considered the greatest rpg by almost everyone for no good reason, afterall! Oh, and if you're afraid he might get lost along the way, including a players guide is never a bad thing.

If he's a mario fan you might also consider Mario and Luigi Partners in Time, if you can find it. It's a great mario rpg that isn't too complicated(though there is some hidden depth! don't get me wrong) and it's filled with the mario charm.

Everyone else is recommending pokemon, and they're not wrong. You can't go wrong with pokemon. That game has universal appeal.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl Also, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is a great start into the RPG genre.. But it's a Game Boy Advance game and is hard to find.

TWEWY and Chrono Trigger are probably a bit much, I think. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon a dungeon crawling RPG -- he might like it. My suggestion would be Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. It might be a little difficult for him toward the end, but it's a fairly easy game, very funny, and very engaging.

All the games that have been recommended are good choices I'm sure, so just to throw something else into the mix, how about a game like Magical Starsign? I played it, and from what I've been told it is very much a beginner's RPG since it is much less complicated than something like Final Fantasy. The characters were neat and the graphics and scenery was really colorful and interesting-looking. Here's the gamespot review: link.

The Mario RPGs (Partners in Time and Superstar Saga) are great choices, so is Pokemon and Spectrobes. Chrono Trigger is a shortish RPG which means he'll probably finish it before getting bored. He also might like action RPGs like Crystal Chronicles: Rings of Fate or Zelda (which is kinda sorta an RPG =P ) Castlevania and The World Ends With You are sick but wait till he's a more seasoned gamer first, no offence but they'll kick his ass.

i find it odd that you never beat your favorite game...

anyway, i would also reccomend pokemon. mario rpgs are very good, but they require button timing and could be more frustrating for him. i definetely would NOT reccomend FFIII or FFIV, as i became frustrated with the extreme level of difficulty and punishement. they were still fun to play, but they sure dont give you break for dieing.

Too bad Earthbound isnt on the DS. It is probably the most kid friendly RPG ever. I beat the game when I was about 6 or 7 years old. But since its not on the DS, I suggest Pokemon. Any of them actually :)

yes i would suggest Pokemon for a seven year old first RPG, or dragons quest,

and i would think for him to get into the final fanatasys about 9-12 i fell in love with FF7 at age 8 and still love it to this day,but you dont wanna poison his brain with allthe fighting, so yea i would have to agree w9ith everyone else pokemon is te way to go ;)

Well, it would help if you told us what game consoles he owns.

This is my primary suggestion: If he has a Game Boy Advance, get him a Pokemon game. Specifically, get him either Pokemon Ruby, Pokemon Sapphire, Pokemon Emerald, Pokemon FireRed, or Pokemon LeafGreen.

The World Ends With You is a definate NO! After all, its T-rated.

Its a shame he has to miss such a good game, maybe when he is older... uhhh, nah, when he is old, DS is gone already.

One game not being mentioned is Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. "The parts may seem commonplace, but Puzzle Quest's blend of RPG and puzzle-game convention makes for something refreshingly unique and dangerously addictive."

It is rated everyone & the puzzle part is a game called bejewled. Make a match of 3 same color across or up/down. It is not hard and fun to play.

Puzzle Quest is really a great game. I can't wait for the next, But anyway.

For kids... there are only 2 I would get my kid. Pokemon or Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door. The Collecting in pokemon and the combat it Paper mario will keep kids hooked.

TWEWY has LOTS of bad words in there, so I wouldn't recommend it to a 7 year old. And I don't think he would get the storyline and sometimes the game can be hard when you don't use a walkthrough. (wait till he's 12 or something)

Final Fantasy is a teen game, and I never heard of a 7 year old playing an FF game (I've only heard 10 year olds and older playing it), so it's not recommended for him either. (wait till he's 10-12)

I've never played Chrono Trigger before, so I don't know.

Perhaps those Pokemon games or Harvest Moon?

Please use the Game Recommendation Thread for all questions about what game(s) to get. We went through quite a lot of trouble to get one up and we don't want to see it go to waste .
